Edit: Actually i'd be more worried about being a controller feeling too light than one feeling too heavy, heh.

Yeah, just like Dualshock 3 is better than the old Sixaxis because of the added weight, not because of the rumble

I can barely imagine how horrible it must have been to play it.

The GameGear had the same controls and buttons as the console version. It was fine and great to play. If you think it won't work, check out Shoen Jump Super/Ultimate Stars. Those games had a similar smash style and were great fun to play.
