The problem is that many of the good players who deserve backroom spots just don't take the game very seriously. Serious discussion threads on the 64 boards are most frequently derailed by top players and mods, not by random noobs.

I know some people from kaillera that are pretty good at smash but they don't give a **** about actually discussing about it they just wanna play.

I love discussing stuff. Sometimes someone says something you never thought of, and it improves your game that much. Same thing with watching videos. Whether it's Isai vs Boom, or two noobs playing, there's always a chance you'll see something you never knew about that can improve your game.

People can laugh at this sort of thing (discussing, etc), but you don't have to contribute...

Discussion is discussion. It's like debating, only no focus on winning and more focus on establishing some sort of compromise, plus everyone can contribute.

It also makes this game seem deeper to those who don't know it...

Video Threads

Personally I think we should have a single Critique/Show your moves thread to keep things organized. I made a critique thread a while back but so far it has not been used. I was also thinking of a thread for combo videos where new ones would be added to the OP. Thoughts/Arguments on this issue?

Btw, kinda late but:
If the backroom was visible but unpostable by the non-members, it would be helpful. The community isn't really that big for ridiculous people, and really old for young people, and everybody still loves this game. I think it would work.

It would be helpful to see the discussion even if one cannot post.

There are some topics that if some random person disagrees with, that they will post on the regular 64 forums and start complaining on it. One major backroom topic that comes to mind is the new tier list discussion.

I love your idea... just in some places it might not work. And having two sections of a backroom, one visible to all and one not is just going overboard.

We don't even know if we are getting a backroom.

I say make it invisible, then have summaries about the discussion posted for all to see on occasion. I think that's what the Brawl people did. Not too sure.

the backroom is completely private. All we can see in the melee and brawl backroom is the link to the backroom... which leads to a page saying "you do not have the authority to view this page" or something like that.

The whole point of the backroom is to have a private discussion, so invisible is best in that sense.

Yes, but there is an easy solution to this. Don't talk about tier lists. lol

Well what I really mean is this, lets say we are talking about a matchup like fox v. luigi (as I understand, not very controversial). Now the backroom decides that this match is fox advantage. However, I myself have played this match a lot and I do not understand how it could be fox's advantage. So I make a new topic on this discussion.

The backroom is full of people that already know this stuff so they don't have to deal with it if they do not want to. And I do not clump up the thread taking away valuable discussion space. However, the specific thread will be used as a help me thread that deals with that particular matchup which can deal with specifics like short hop double laser more or using X approach.

The backroom allows people with ability to actually put together a good discussion because we won't have people that can't play smash actually be part of the conversation (for ex, kirby is bad against falcon) and those who do not understand can just ask for a clarification.

Basically, I am interested in the discussions but I am actually not that good at smashing. As an average player that is keen on learning, I feel that making the backroom private will pretty much leave me stranded. I don't get any interesting discussion because all the influential people won't be in the regular discussion that I can access. And I can't see any of the interesting stuff that I want to see. So its a lose-lose for me.

But w/e.

Edit: Also the original backroom was first created as a social group as far as I was aware.

Well, it would be best to keep it private until the discussion is over. That way, we will not have to worry about... lets call them distractions. Once the discussion is over (using your example, we determine Fox has an advantage over Luigi), then there is no longer a reason to keep it private. We could then move the thread to a non-private location?

Just a suggestion.

I am not sure how it will be distracting. And yes, its cool if people move threads after they are done like they do in brawl but that means each and every thread. Do you really think people will move threads?

I don't really see the point honestly. Like I said, the community is small.

I'd definitely be up for a backroom. On one hand, it will be only the top players, so maybe some of the top players will come back since there's a forum dedicated to the top players. On the other hand, it may end up being worse than our competitive forums...

Either way, I'd be up for it if I were invited :)

I'm willing to start a Controller Guide if people think it is worth it.
NOTE: I'm assuming by controller guide you mean computer controllers? I don't think we need a guide on plugging in a N64 controller :D
Things I would list:
Good brands of controllers.
Programs which can assist with using your controller.
How to setup your controller.

Anything else needed?

Like many of you I believe the Competitive Events sub forum is not being used as efficiently as it could. Instead of a sub forum for competitive events I think we should have a specific forum for Videos. Sort of like in the Melee Forum.

^^^ I believe this as well.

also, I also believe that a back room has no point as long as the n64 community is this small.

We only need a back room if this community somehow grows. since the majority of the people who go here are some of the best/better smash 64 players here.

(as in the entire online community comes here as well)

A video sub-forum would be good.
doesn't divide the community and a lot of people like showing off their videos

I think this maybe one of the things on the list to do...there is no real point to the competitive events thing currently, people just dont care it seems xD

so maybe some sort of video sub forum...and hopefully a BR!
