Luigi sucks
I can't possibly assume that I'm the first one to think of this, so I'm sorry if it's been suggested before, but doesn't it seem like Smash tournaments for the new games would be more viable on the 3DS (like pokemon tourneys) because of issues with the wireless stuff on the Wii U?

The WiiU will have more popular tournaments but the 3DS will still have a hardcore following..you can be sure of that

Are you implying that 3DS' can be linked up with a wire? Because the 3DS would have the same issues with wireless interference.
Plus it's not impossible for Nintendo or some company to come up with a wired solution.

As much as the naysayers want us to believe that everything wireless is inherently flawed and has hella input lag and interference issues... our tournaments are going to be fine with Pro Controllers.

I say the nay from firsthand tournament experience, not speculation.

We can have 3DS tournaments and Wii U tournaments, but I believe people would prefer to see the action unfold on a tv/projection screen than a tiny 3DS screen

I'm pretty sure that the 3DS version will probably be for the casual gamers, since if the Mario Kart series has anything to say, online gamers would prefer Mario Kart Wii over Mario Kart 7.

Pro controllers have less input lag than most modern TVs do. Obviously interference is a cause for concern at HUGE tournaments (APEX/Evo), but for most locals it is extremely unlikely. My mind would also be blown if Ninty didn't come out with a wired pro controller anyway.

$50 says that they'll release it around Smash 4 time to please the competitive crowd.

If someone would mind describing their past experience playing smash with the Nintendo Wii U Pro Controller I would definitely appreciate the insight. I have tried playing Project M using the Wii U Classic Controller (ugh..) and the Wii U Classic Pro Controller (meh..,) and they both feel far to "light". Really need more weight. I did see they have an adapter that lets your Game Cube controller connect to your Wii U so I guess I can use that for Smash 4. :/

I own two Mayflash Adapters and I can tell you, there's not nearly as good as they may seem. The connection sometimes flips out and, personally, it makes it hard for meto play.

Honestly, you'd be better off playing with a Classic Controller.

I can see the 3DS version being used for friendlies at tournaments, maybe even some low-key money matches, but Wii U will be the dominant console for tournaments.

Semi-unrelated, but it'll be interesting to see what the different stages for both games will entail. Like will Smash U have more stages banned than Smash 3DS, or vice versa?

It comes down to how many stages are in each version, and how many stages in either version don't have spontaneous events

Im sure that during the months leading up to the Wii U version's release tournaments on the 3DS will happen. I think it'll be fine, and fun, to have the option available to host tourneys both ways. Another thread somewhere on the site was talking about a way to go Swiss with the 3DS tourneys, so even post Wii U the 3DS could have it's niches. Though really, playing for an extended time on the non XL 3DS may be taxing on some.

Yeah, they both have their advantages and disadvantages. I also wonder how we would be able to fight each other. Like, do we have to be friends to play local multiplayer or can we just place the 3DS's up against each other so they can connect? Not sure how tournaments work in Pokemon, but we can definitely use that to help us out.

You're right because the Wii U is Smash 5. Smash 4 tournaments will happen on the 3DS. Smash 5 ones on the Wii U. ;)

Yeah, would tournaments require you have the same kind of 3DS so one player wouldn't be disadvantaged?

I don't think so. It really just comes down to preference. Rules don't state you need an official GC controller and that you can't use the generic ones from Gamestop.(as long as its not a turbo :p)

That makes sense I guess, but is there a input lag difference between 3DS, 3DS Xl and 2DS? I don't know if there is or not so I'm just spitballing

I have no idea, but that could prove a problem if that's the case. But I still doubt that there would be a ban on the non XLs, it would just come down, again, to personal preference. If you played Brawl/PM with the classic controller and you're cool with a bit of lag then go for the hypothetical lag from the other models. But since the 3DSs are all like on board with their controls and not wireless I doubt theres much lag.

The issue is the cost of getting a new 3ds. I have an original 3ds, and if the xl is superior i don't want to shell out $250 for a new 3ds.

And I'm definitely not advocating that everyone does go out and get a new XL, just stating a situation that could possibly be true and was created without any research whatsoever. :p I don't blame you for not wanting to buy a whole new upgrade just for one game.

I can't imagine non-online 3DS tournaments will be a huge thing when the Wii U version comes out. The characters will work the same in both versions, and nearly all of the 3DS version's stages look they are going to be banned. All of your training on the 3DS version will carry over to the Wii U version, so a person who only owns the 3DS version could still attend a Wii U tournament if they provide controllers. Holding 3DS tournaments would be redundant.

Unless of course we organise Smash Run tournaments, which I think is totally worth experimenting with.

As I read this, I realized.... this is what Nintendo is praying people will do. For the Wii U version, anyway.
I mean yeah, that's true. For some people Smash will be a system seller. For others it won't be.

Well one of the big appeals of smash tournies is watching it on the big screen for other people to see and streaming it for online viewers which would be harder for the 3DS. I do think the 3DS competitive scene will be fun online though. Looking forward to it.

Did you completely ignore the For Glory mode of the Direct or something?

Because people actually use the ingame tourney mode in Brawl/Melee

Why would FD stages be restricted to only For Glory anyways? And even if they are, you can still use ForGlory with friends, and it isint hard to register friend codes when you're both right there

you can connect your 3DS to a TV, so it shouldn't make a difference.

Nintendo Network will probably have a streaming mode for 3DS as well for everyone to watch like HDTV

That's all well and good, but I don't see how this has anything to do with my initial post.

Also, when I said "For Glory mode isn't a tournament mode", I meant it isn't meant for tourney players, it's just meant for people who want a more raw match against real people, but want it quickly.

FD stages are not restricted to For Glory, they just aren't in For Fun. You can still use FD stages in local/"With Friends" play.

This isn't the topic for For Glory discussion anyway. For Glory has no relevance to how the tournament scene will be on 3DS.

My point was no one actually uses the tourney mode in brawl/melee anyways. They just make their own. And for glory will have a VERY large impact on tourney play. The FD versions of each stages arent all the same length.

Your point of For Glory not being for tourney players makes absolutely no sense, because a majority of all tourney matches end up being played on FD/Smashville

Tourneys only use about 8 to 12 of the damn stages anyways nowadays, so banning stages wont be a problem. We already have Battlefield, FD, and Smashville confirmed.

I've seen some people use the Tourney mode, but that's irrelevant, as I wasn't referring to this to begin with.

For Glory is not meant FOR tourney players, it just happens to be something that will benefit them, as a training ground. As many people have already noted, there are players who don't enter tournaments, but happen to like playing with items off and what not. This includes myself (as tournaments for Smash don't exist where I live). For Glory is for people who want a quick online game with a more raw ruleset. Nothing more. For Glory will be impossible to use as a vehicle for tournaments, but it will be a good training ground for people who want to participate in tournaments.

Again though, this has nothing to do with the post of mine you quoted. If you want to discuss For Glory Mode, there is more in-depth discussion of it here:
http://smashboards.com/threads/official-for-glory-online-features-discussion-/・ω・-/.352055/

This topic is all about whether or not local tournaments will be a thing for the 3DS version, and I personally don't think they will be after the Wii U version comes out, because 3DS players can simply compete in Wii U tournaments, as the characters all play the same in both versions. Any practice done in one version will carry over to the other, and setting up streams for the Wii U version will be a lot easier. Online tournaments on 3DS will still be a thing, but local 3DS tournaments will be redundant, unless we consider Smash Run as a tournament vehicle, and I for one think it's worth experimenting with.
