Althuogh it does add a bit more of a random, sparatic feel to the matches, the use of items does not completely mask the skill of a player. however i believe the use of smash balls in a 1v1 is stupid. everyone will just end up playing the spacies or sonic for the obvious advantage. who's bright idea was it to turn on final smashes in a 1v1 tourney setting neway:confused:

It seems that saying: "Hey cool, they play with items! Now we'll see some improvisation and quick thinking skills!" makes you a n00b. I'd say that's prety sad. What I want to say is that items adds a whole new dimension to the game, and balances many things!

Example: Sonic ain't that good, according to that list based on tournaments (Which I just can't find >.<), but with items on his running speed will give him more advantages.
Example 2: Infinites can be escaped with luck ; )

And, items on = weird random funny moments ^_^

How do random elements balance things (it just makes fast characters and camping more viable)? How is random ANYTHING good for tournaments?

Anyway, their is a project on this site for making a item-ruleset. But item tournaments should NEVER become the standard.

See the thing is, the most awesome part of this match was when Ken KOd SK92 in like 15 seconds or something... with no items. I know matches in Brawl take a long time but as time goes on and people get better and better, things will look more and more like this. The fact that the game is still undeveloped doesn't mean you can't take competition seriously.

Nobody denies that item play can be fun for its wildness and unpredictability, but unpredictability is exactly what should not exist in a tournament match. Item play is great when you're just messing around and not competing for a title and monetary reward.

And no one is arguing that putting items on removes skill altogether, or even that the more skilled player will not usually win with items on. But the fact that the less skilled player might EVER win because of items is totally unacceptable, regardless of how often it happens.

one thing i've seen for sure: as much as smashboardians diss the use of them, and maybe the do imbalance the game...

they do make the matches way more enjoyable for people who don't hate items, and evo fans. that's what mattered to me, and d*mn i think it would be quite fun to play in an item tournament with smash balls after seeing this. maybe not as a tournament standard, but it certainly looks fun

careless wrong direction up+b at the end cost him...i was also surprised marth didn't wait to bait out a roll before using his smash ball....anyways they were fun matches..if a bit random due to the items..i agree with teekay on the use of items in a major tournament...i would love to see what the srk people would really think if they inserted random items into a street fighter game...but meh..it will never happen

anyways, as fun as those are, i am disappointed, i've been waiting half a year for evo to see the top players play and find out who is the "grand champion" for the year...but most of the top players didn't even go...and bumper spawns/smashballs determined way too much of the final matches to really tell the skill level of the players...(although it is still easy to see that they are pretty good overall)

Possibly the most obnoxious video I've seen in a long time. Had to turn sound off halfway through because of the ******* in the background yelling for no apparent reason.

I fail to see why these matches were so "great".. Most of the KO's stemmed from item usage and there wasn't much pure combat going on.
