I just got smashed today and I’ve been playing with the joy cons pretty well, but I was wondering if I should get a GameCube or stick with my own because I can’t decide

I have my adapter coming in today. I also have 4 GC controllers. A 3rd party controller plus the adapter shouldn't cost you more than 30 bucks.

My opinion is yes, if you want a more comfortable experience and plan on playing the game into the future then buy a Gamecube controller.

I've really enjoyed my pro controller. If you aren't trained into a GC controller I'd say go with the pro. It is nice and will be useful for more games.

I think it’s just depends on what your used to many of us grew up on melee so we’re gamecube controller lifers but I’m sure a pro controller works just as well

There's a lot to like about the Gamecube Controller, because it is indeed a good controller. Don't buy into the proclamations that herald it as the "Ultimate Controller for Pros" and "The only way to play Smash".

The Gamecube Controller is about Nostalgia, Muscle Memory, and Tradition. But it secured its preferential status because during the Wii/U era Nintendo had a lack of Standard/Good controllers. Unless you're from the Melee era, the Switch's Pro Controller is just fine and you'll do just as well as any player with a GC controller.

It's really just about what era you started playing Smash in and the Muscle Memory associated with that. My fingers still play Smash the same way I did on the N64 (probably why I struggle with spot dodging), I used my left hand for rolling and shields (Z trigger made this come naturally on the N64), the right shoulder button for grabs, and X is my primary jump button because that's where the C-buttons were.

A pro controller is better in my opinion, it has humble, gyro for other games, is more beautiful, and most important, is not wired.
If you find a wireless GC controller having or not the other features the pro controller have but not care about anyway, because you only pretends to play smash with the new controller, it's a good option just like the pro controller.

I will keep my pro controller, its the best wireless controller IMO.

I’ve been playing Smash for as long as I can remember, and I have almost exclusively used the GameCube controller. With the major exceptions being Smash 3DS which wasn’t too terrible. And Smash 64, which is so different from the other Smashes that it doesn’t really matter.

However, I will honestly say that even though I’ve never felt totally comfortable using anything else, the Pro Contoller honestly feels really good, in my opinion. As great as the GC controller is, there are plenty of viable and comfortable ways to play Smash. The 3DS, the Pro Controller, the Joycons (preferably with a grip), or an undocked Switch all feel just fine if you ask me.

The most important aspect of the controller is the button spacing, grip, and the placement of the c stick.

Admittedly, I have a strong preference for the GameCube controller. However there are flaws with the joycons. The buttons are close together. So depending on how large your hand is, you could accidentally press buttons in the heat of the moment. The small height of the analog sticks make for really small margin of errors when using them especially for diagonal inputs. Maybe it is bad habits of mine, but it really screws with me.

The joycons are totally usable in your average gameplay in smash. But I find it frustrating to use for serious play.

In short, if your going to spend a lot of time playing smash, Get a pro or GameCube controller. Mostly for your sanity.
