The team behind the New England tournament series Shine announced that Shine 2023 will be their final event.
The Shine series started in 2016 as a grassroots major in Massachusetts. It was one of the first large majors in Massachusetts and the New England region. Shine hosted brackets for Super Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros.for Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Hundreds of players traveled to Boston each year Shine was active to participate.
In their tweet discussing the closure of Shine, they discussed the difficulties they were facing. The series historically had budget issues, often running into debt that the tournament organizers would pay out of pocket. The Shine team also noted the hostile economic environment right now for eSports. Smash has felt these economic tremors already this year, with Beyond the Summit closing its doors and professional players like James “VoiD” Makekau-Tyson losing their sponsorship. The team also discussed that most of the TO’s wanted to move onto the next chapter of their lives.
For full transparency, Shine’s team will be disclosing the fiscal map for Shine 2023 in the future. There will be a merch drive to help fund Shine 2023. Registration for Shine 2023 will open up soon, which we will also edit into this article once it goes live. We will share information on both of these when they go live.
