Shield decay

Oh god..

Just wondering, because once in awhile I'll throw out a downsmash as lucas with charged B after a hit on shield and it will leave the shield nearly broken and then it will decay very briefly and break. So I was just wanted to know if it was the player or the shield stun (skill level or 'gaurentee').

Shields shrink when held, usually shrink when hit by attacks, and shrink when in shield impact ("Shield stun animation"). If a move dealt, say, 500 damage but no shield damage by itself, the defender would be stuck in shield stun (the formula for which is determined directly by attack damage) likely until their shield broke anyway.

You can try buffering a roll or sidestep out of shield using the C-stick to see if D-smash has enough shield stun to force that kind of break, and you can also try shield DI-ing to get away from the move.

It was likely due more to the massive shield damage and just that last touch more due to the stun. I can't say for certain without knowing how much damage a OU D-smash does, but I'd say the following is more likely:

DK's shield got hit and took a high amount of damage. While in shield stun he tried tapping up to jump OoS, but jumping or anything else during shield stun is disallowed, meaning an upward press simply moves the shield upward. After shieldstun ended, up was still being held and just as DK realizes what happened, he goes to release the stick to jump again, but is too slow and the shield breaks.

Try doing lab work with OU D-smash and buffered sidesteps (Hold C-stick down) OoS.

if shields didn't shrink while in hitstun, nobody's shield would ever break. The whole reason shields ever get broken is because they're being hit enough to keep them in their shield, and the reason they don't drop it, to avoid it breaking, is because they are in hitstun.

No, your shield doesn't deplete during shield stun. If your shield doesn't break instantly from shield damage you're able to jump/roll/dodge out of it.

There seems to be one frame of shield decay during shield drop though. This means that in the case your shield gets damaged just enough so a single frame of depletion will break it, it will break on the very frame after shield stun, if you just let go of the shield button. For some reason C-stick buffering a roll/spotdodge also doesn't work in that scenario, although you are able to manually dodge out of it - should you manage to hit the 1 frame window.
