It will sound n00bish, but I can't seem to get the hang of SHFFL, and I don't know how to do it well. I would appreciate it immensly if someone could help me out, because my hope is to become competitive on a tournament level.

Thanks.

First just practice shorthopping and doing attacks. Once you've MASTERED doing that against your friends or computers, then throw in the fast fall, then the l cancel. Just take it in steps.

Yea like mana said, do it in steps. It's how I learned.

One tip is to use someone with a laggy attack when you're on the skill level where you can sort-of-shffl, so it is obvious if your shffl was successful or not. Examples would be link with dair or bowser with bair.

The way I learned was in steps.

First I learned to short hop aerial, and then learned to fast fall during the aerial. One word: C-stick. (Or two words :))

Somehow for me SHFFL'd Knees to the left are the easiest, as I jump with Y, and slide the base of my thumb onto the C-Stick and slam it left. I then use my middle finger to L-Cancel using the R button.

Since Falcon is pretty easy to Short hop with (at least, easier than Fox :D), it's pretty easy to get the hang of it if you know your comfort spots since you don't have to concentrate on lightly tapping Y or X. It's basically a quick press.

If you're going to practice, do it in Versus mode against a Level 1 Computer or an empty 2P. C-Stick is vital in shffling (Even though Isai doesn't use it), especially when you're first starting.

Falcon takes feeling and prediction proress, but you cant have that until shffling is 2nd nature to you. My way of learning it was breaking it down into the 4 actions, Jump, C-stick an attack, Fastfall, Lcancel, and REACT

the reaction is the important thing, what you do with those precious moments you saved with the fast fall L cancel.

Faster you are, the better your chances at a nair or more uairs etc, and dont be afraid to let the combo go if they DI, and scare em with some dashdance, and get the grab.

If you wanna practice shffl combos on your friends, all you have to do is hit with a raptor boost, and then go for a neutral air, and then combo as much as you want, good other combo starters are of course the stomp, and just random nairs, neutral air is very hard to master.

Just incase you didnt know (trying to be helpful) the neutral air can be fastfalled in different ways for diferent effects, like you can fast fall L cancel it after the first hit and get a grab, or you can let it hang slightly longer for both hits and try to combo or knee.

The knee is implied of course. I cant explain the knee I worship its mightyness

edit :

Remember when short hopping forwards with a neutral air and hitting your opponent, to DI backwards as to let the 2nd kick hit them without you flying past, thus setting up your Uair x how awesome you are to knee.
