If there are too many consul's in the next generation, it could lead to the collapse of the video game market again...

Unless Sega has something REALLY special, I don't even think a next generation consul by them would do well.

Well, let's not forget: they could have been planning this console since the dreamcast died. Imagine what they could do with 8 years put into a console.

I highly doubt it.

At first, I was thinking that it was some new arcade thing like NAOMI back in the day.
Now I'm starting to think that it's probably some new engine for a game like the Hedgehog Engine.

If anything, it would be amusing to see how Sega would do if they re-entered the console business.
But first, they need to get Sonic back into gear. Unleashed was good, but they still have a ways to go.

Good. Hopefully they will revamp old Sega titles the way they were meant to be done.

I DO NOT want to see Sega re-enter the console buisness. As it is, I already need more than one console to play my favorite games. Why would anyone want to need to buy more?

Not only that, but Sega is publishing all the best 3rd-party games for the Wii.

Sega can't re enter the console business from what I have read they have reported hefty losses last year. You can't go into hardware when you are already losing money. Secondly non of the Sega consoles ever really competed with the market leader of the time. Sega was only good in the minds of their loyal fans. Yes Dreamcast and Genesis were awesome and deserved to win their respective generation but the truth is Sega was and is no match for Sony or Nintendo.

It's just Sega's latest arcade stuff. They definetly aren't doing consoles again. They recently made a portable tv/radio/ect ipod like device and was able to play flash games. It's been released only in segaworld claw machines, and the final version has the game functionality removed.

Maybe sega will pull the plug on sonic? Some dreams will never come true :)
There's no reason to pull the plug until Sonic stops breaking into the millions of copies. To be honest though, they seem to be working on it. I stopped buying the series myself after "Sonic the Hedgehog" 2006.

I'm guessing that the only reason Sonic hasn't been overshadowed is that there are no other high-speed 3-D platformers.

I think it would be interesting to see what would happen if Sega started making consoles again. I mean, they didn't really suck at it. They just a series of... unfortunate events.

Like for instance...
1.) Selling the rights to the master system to Tonka. The people that make those silly little trucks.
2.) Canceling Shenmu II for dreamcast, then putting it on Xbox in America.
3.) Gamegear taking 6 batteries.
4.) Expensive battery eating handhelds
5.) Anyone remember Saturnday?
6.) No DVD or copy protection on dreamcast.
7.) No good Sonic games for Saturn.
8.) SegaNet lasting... 10 months.
9.) Remember the 32x and Sega CD? yaaa.....
10.) Berny Stoler who decided... No 2D games... or RPGs.
11.) "Saturn is not our future" then everyone who bought one said "AWW ****"

Okay maybe they did suck at it...but usually.. you learn from your mistakes...

Personally I think SEGA found its place as a 3rd Party Developer. It has more flexability and is kinda the Refugee shelter for games that wouldn't find a publisher else where like Madworld and the Conduit. Plus they have more experience in Advertising so they are more likely to get Software sales.

Personally I think this is just a new IP and not a console.

Do you count Sonic adventure, since it was released so close to 2000? I'm not gonna lie, I liked that game. It was nice to have something fresh in the sonic series, but little did we know the cons would be overwhelming.

They'd sell loads if they revive all their old and dearly loved classics like SoR etc.
I think they'd sell a lot due to the nostalgic value a revival can bring.
Still, it could all go horribly wrong too.

LMAO @ Shadow. That's a prime example of a complete and utter f***-up

Who's idea was it to have Shadow? Not to mention he has guns. Seriously, Adventure 2 was the last sonic game I've played, although I hear the ds ones are decent

Ha, imagine the but loads of money they would make with a 3D Comic Zone, Kid Chameleon, and Vectorman.

I think Shadow, both with and without the guns, was a good idea. This is mainly because I have never liked Sonic. I dislike the 2-d platformers for the most part, and Sonic's personality just annoys me. As a character, Sonic is really shallow, and way too easy going considering the weight of the world is always on his shoulders. It's like he doesn't understand the fact that everyone dies if he fails (within the context of the game).

It probably didn't help that my first Sonic game was Adventure 2 Battle.

EDIT: I'm sure it is different if you grew up with Sonic, but since my first game was Adventure 2 Battle, I have to admit Shadow was the better character (in that game).

Yea, sonic from Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog is a good example of today's sonic. Sonic from genesis was all about kicking *** and saving little animals. I really recommend Sonic and Knuckles. You'd like playing knuckles

Sorry, I tried a few. I just don't like Sonic 2-D, in fact, I really don't like any Sonic game much. At least with Shadow you got some awesome weapons to pwn with.

Actually, I really liked the shooter elements of Shadow the Hedgehog. The multiple storylines and ten replays needed to get the final ending were annoying, but as far as the Sonic games go, it was the most fun. You could just destroy anything in your way, and then steal it's weapons. It fixed the really annoying problem of homing attacking a group of enemies only to miss once and end up killing yourself. If I was ever hit by a projectile, I had one of my own to respond with, instead of jumping right into an opponent with a gun. And it was fun to indiscriminantly blow everything up.

:dizzy:

I don't understand how a person does not like the 2D Sonic games, no offense.

However, I do sort of agree with this. This is why I highly prefer the Sonic from the original games. He did better as a silent protagonist, if you ask me. In fact, I think the entire plot of Sonic games was better off as it was in the old Genesis days.

It probably didn't help that my first Sonic game was Adventure 2 Battle.

Yeah...I think Shadow was a good character in SA2. Beyond that, he's just completely emo, "I hate my life", "What's my past?" "Why do others have to exist?" Which is why I don't really like him beyond that. But SA2 is a very good game if you ask me, despite some people absolutely loathing it. My favorite 3D Sonic to date (if you don't count isometric games -- if so, 3D Blast might beat it out, despite all of the bashing it gets).

It sounds to me more like you're just more fond of shooting games than platformers to me. Shadow the Hedgehog isn't a bad game as a shooter...as a Sonic game, though, it's as bad as Captain Falcon in Brawl.

The 2-D sonic games always had qualities I didn't like, such as a need to memorize the course simply to avoid embarassing yourself and a healthy system that brought your score to zero with every hit.

Maybe I am a bit of a shooter fan though, Shadow the Hedgehog had a speed element that no other shooter had.

Maybe if we stopped expecting Sonic games from Sonic team, we wouldn't be bitterly disappointed all the time. They're games are simply not Sonic games, and as you pointed out, can be better appreciated as something else.

Of course, the "something else" is never all that great, but at least it's not a total disappointment.

That doesn't make any sense why would an EXTREMELY established game company fall to a company with none of Sony's credentials.

Sony said that they plan on the Playstation 3 lasting... 10 years I think they said..?
Is that even possible at this rate? They've sold 6,000,000 less consoles than Microsoft and 25,000,000 less consoles than Nintendo. They really aren't making much of a profit selling these... They've lost.... $1,970,000,000 in 2007 from the Playstation 3. The console originally cost about $850 to manufacture, and they lost $250 per unit sold.

Sony has failed this generation. They said they expect finally making a small profit for the Playstation 3 sometime in 2009.
