I've noticed that a lot of sequels are coming out of late. It seems like you can't even look at a list of upcoming or recently released game without getting a bunch of numbers. Just look at some recent and upcoming releases, Street Fighter IV, Resistance 2, Bioshock 2, Final Fantasy XII, Resident Evil 5, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II. The list goes on and on. Why are sequels becoming increasingly popular anyway? Have the main stream developers run out of ideas (how many variants can you do on "dude shooting aliens" anyway)? I suppose that it's left to the smaller game companies to come up with original ideas while the mainstream pumps out their sequels and sucks up all of the money. This makes me wonder, what would things be like if there were no sequels? On the pessimistic side of things, we would miss out on some truly amazing sequels. But then again, we wouldn't have to put up with some not so amazing sequels. Without sequels, then every game would have to be fresh, brand new and original. This would be nice, it would also draw out some very creative minds who's ideas would probably go unnoticed otherwise. And if there are no sequels (and supposing that spin-offs don't exist either) that means no franchise (well, long lasting franchise anyway). And no franchise means no crappy Uwe Boll movies.
