Sakurai's column from Famitsu issue of November 21st, 2013

Masahiro Sakurai published yet another column in this week’s Famitsu. Sakurai talked all about working on the new Smash Bros., games including his workload, schedule, living arrangements, and more. You can find a roundup of Sakurai’s quotes, courtesy of Polygon’s translations.

Sakurai on how he’s taken up temporarily residence right nearby the Namco Bandai Games development studio in Shinagawa, Tokyo…
“I’ve lived within walking distance of the development studio ever since development on the new Smash Bros. began. If I’m going to make something like a Smash Bros., then I have to take every aspect of it seriously. Losing time in the commute or being beholden to whenever the last train of the night departs is out of the question. So I moved here temporarily until development is complete.”

Sakurai on what an average day of development looks like for him…
“My work generally involves supervision. The team knows what I want in the game, so I check on what everyone’s producing and make sure it aligns with the game. ‘Supervision’ could make it sound like all I’m doing is looking at things all day, but that’s not the case. The team’s work is all built up according to what I told them, so it’s ultimately my job to make adjustments and finalize it all. So not only am I looking at all the graphics, sound, motions, characters, stages, game modes, and UI interfaces, but I have to check up on the spec documents being used to build all of these.”

On dealing with the large amount of new staffers new to the Smash Bros. series…
“When I’m discussing supervision work with people, sometimes upwards of 20 staffers at once, there’s often a video camera going around to record what I said and told them to do. It’s honestly not the funnest thing, because people act more restrained in front of a camera and nobody likes to hear a recording of their own voice, but with everything accurately recorded, you can bring up exactly what was said at any time without having to rely on vague notes.”

Sakurai further discussing his schedule, in which he gets to the office by 10 AM and takes his lunch break in the studio cafeteria at 12:30, followed by 4-player Smash Bros. matches during the second half of his lunch hour…
“At this point, the new Smash Bros. is fun, more so than Melee or Brawl. However, we have to work to keep things dynamic and not over-fine-tune the balance. If we aim for complete fairness, there won’t be any personality to it. By the way, I almost always win in these battles. I’m no wimp at this by now, apparently.”

Sakurai on another important design assignment he’s involved with…
“In all previous Smash Bros. games, I’ve entered in all the data for fighter skills and hitboxes by myself, and it’s quite nearly that way with this game too. I’ve thought about leaving this work to others and I’ve actually tried it once or twice, but it hasn’t worked out. I don’t want to release an incomplete game, and I want everything to be as successful as possible, but it results in a massive amount of work for me. It’s a big problem, but there are reasons for doing it this way.”

Sakurai on how once he completes work on damage rates and hitboxes for a character, they’ll already fairly playable at that point…
“Characters’ in-game balance and features are something that I’m thinking about from the start while coming up with motions. If I left that to someone else midway, that’d make things more difficult. It’s faster and more accurate to just input the numbers myself than try to explain it in words to somebody.”

Sakurai on his other responsibilities, like making presentations to the copyright holders for all the guest characters, providing direction to outsourced developers, and formulate plans for future PR and info releases…
“One problem with my work is that there’s just so much supervision to do. I may get dozens of requests in a day, between meetings, group checks and other events. Just taking care of them all brings me to 10 p.m. at night. I try to get all the requests squared away on the same day, but sometimes it waits until the next day, since some department heads may no longer be in the office once we get to 7 p.m. or so. It gets even harder if I’m out of the office. This work keeps me busy until late nights as it is; continually moving things later on is like tying the noose around my neck.”

Another note: Sakurai praises the Namco Bandai Games-developed tools he’s using to streamline the fine-tuning of character moves.

Not sure what I think about the responsibility he puts himself under with character skills and balance. I mean, he has a more experienced team to help him out with that and I'm sure he knows what he's doing. Just hope he knows the inadequacies he had with Brawl that he is going to take care of in this game. :/

Might not want to read this one too closely.

Some people are probably going to go bonkers on Sakurai for having said this, even if the game isn't even out yet.
It's his opinion, I mean, we'll find out ourselves if we enjoy the games or not. I think it's fair to say that most game developers find what they make enjoyable.

Interesting interview, seems to focus more on how crazy-hectic Sakurai's working schedule is.

Yeah, I know, but some people... don't really see that to say it mildly.

So, this is Sakurai saying "you aren't going to get perfect balance as the game has personality". As long as there's nothing as crazy as MK or something I guess I can handle.

Why, oh why does this man consistently think that these things are mutually exclusive? With his years of experience, is it really that hard to create a game where all the characters are relatively balanced and still be fun as hell to play? I look at P:M as the best example. At least his role for Smash 4's development is more of a supervisor than the sole person responsible for game balance. Perhaps the Namco Bandai employes can add solid gameplay fundamentals without Sakurai noticing lol.

Despite all that, though, I really respect all the work for Smash he's put in and continues to put in. Such a work ethic to make a quality game seems unrivaled now-a-days. Pretty sure I'll buy a Wii U for this game. Can't really see how it could possibly be the worst Smash game. Though if all else fails....

Wow thanks for posting this! I have mixed feelings about Sakurai doing the balance all on his own again. I think to myself, he'll get it right this time but then Brawls balance just lowers my expectations.

At least there is still no tripping! But for how long...?

Damn... I'm nervous for the rift Smash Boards is going to see between Smash 4 and Project M...

No doubt it's going to happen, it's a game made by the man for the people, and one made by the people for the people.
This may just be worse than Brawl vs. Melee.

Also I guess now this means the balance won't be 50:50. I hope he makes it balanced enough so that a low tier can beat a high tier occasionally.

But we'll see, I have faith in sakurai.

@pikajew If there's gonna be a rift i'm not gonna be a part of it, i'll play PM and Smash 4, all smash games are great I really don't understand why there needs to be a rift, its childish really.

We're STILL discussing Brawl vs Melee on this very board TO THIS DAY. It'll happen no matter what stupidly (Wii U vs 3DS ALREADY exists) but at least one more person will logically not join in, so thank you!

I find the explanation of Sakurai's normal work day to be interesting, and I can only hope that we find the new Smash Bros. to be as fun as he does.

Also:

How sick would it be if Sakurai came to a smash tournament like Apex? A venture into the world of we competitive smash plebes

Could he at least have someone sit next to him when he balances the characters by himself?

I am a casual player of Smash. And I could instantly tell that Snake and Metaknight were overpowered and Samus was underpowered.

I think by that quote, Sakurai means that some characters will have an advantage over other characters and not that a character will have an advantage over every character or most characters.

It is alright if characters have bad match-ups and good match-ups. Bowser looks like he will have one hell of an uphill battle against Wii Fit Trainer and Megaman. But from the footage, The Villager might have trouble fending off the drop-kicking goliath.

The above 2 quotes bother me... If there's one thing that both Melee and Brawl had in common it's the fact that they both featured pretty unbalanced rosters. I thought part of the Namco-Bandai development team was brought on board in the first place to help Sakurai on issues like these.

Just gonna have to cross our fingers and pray that Sakurai learned his lesson after Brawl.

He simply realizes that 100% balance is impossible, so he's going somewhere else.
Even Melee wasn't even close to be 100% balanced. Nothing new in the world of fighting games and nothing to worry about.

You can't fully balance everything. In Mario Kart, even if two karts have the same stat total, their pros and cons can end up being very different.

Well duh, that's just simple logic. However that isn't what he said, just because it is impossible to get perfect balance doesn't mean you shouldn't try to go out of your way to get as close as humanly possible. However from the context I read it as him going out of his way to make sure there isn't to much balance, which is just absurd.

The balance thing is going to be fairly detrimental. He is essentially asserting that it isn't even going to be a primary focus, I don't care if the game is "100%" balanced or whatever. He is basically implying that he would rather have a fun casual experience. Is this bad? No. I don't even take Smash seriously, but any menial attempt to justify what he is insinuating is almost insulting. It is overt and apparent that it wont be a necessary thing on his list. In fact, quite the contrary, he is attempting to make the game fun and disregard certain aspects of balancing.

Yeah I felt that too, but hey any hope is hope.
I'm not worried, he knows what he's doing. If I can make a parallel with something unrelated, Eminems career.

SSB64 - Infinite (His first jump into the industry)
Melee - Marshal Mathers LP (His holy grail)
Brawl - When he was on drugs (Constantly argued about as not that good compared to previous work)
Smash 4 - Recovery. Or MMLP2. That's yet to be seen

Now send the hate lololol

Nice article.

I can tell people are going to be worried for some things Sakurai said in this interview, but it sounds promising to me. I also believe he's doing his best to balance the characters, but knows that it's almost impossible to completely balance them all. A little imbalance is necessary for character personality, which is what he's referring too.

Or basically 75% Balance 25% Unbalance, with that 25% to keep things fresh.

First of all, he's a workaholic. He already has health issues and with this lifestyle, it can only get worse. He seems kind of insane in that regard because he doesn't seem to realize it at all. Worrisome.
There's also the fact that he originally planned to not do all the balancing on his own, he went out of his way to say this in an interview so he must know that that was probably one of the biggest burdens during previous Smashs' developments.

And here he is again, doing it all himself. I understand the logic behind it, it seems reasonable from a game quality standpoint, but at the same time I feel like he probably hates doing it but would go crazy if someone else were to touch it. Literally insane.

It's also funny because I do think he actually has a wife, at least he had one in the Sora days. But every few years he's moving for 2-3 years, leaving his wife/family behind (he already moved during Brawl development for the same reasons). I'd love for him to talk about that, is that just normal for them, is it just "well that's how our life is, no big deal"?

And stop worrying about his balance comments. He balances based on 4 players free for all matches with items on. Always did. So the end result is completely unpredictable.
And even if he tried to balance according to what the competetive scene wants, you can't guarantee balance.
He actually might even fail if he were to try to make it imbalanced on purpose. It's just out of his hands, ESPECIALLY the way he does it.
Hundreds of enthusiasts dissecting the game for YEARS will always create a product the developers did not intend because they have neither infinite amount of time, nor as many people. There are awful characters and there are very dominating characters in every game no matter what, so props to him not freaking out over it (even though he's probably not as aware of the whole situation in the way I'm describing here, different perspectives and all).

I'm not saying "ignore balance", but neither is he.

I look at P:M as the best example.
I do not keep up with P:M much, but at what cost is it trying to achieve close to perfect balance (I assume that's what you're getting at)?
They release new versions relatively often, making slight or not so slight adjustments every time, partially based on feedback from the community (again, I assume it does have some influence) for ... as long as they want?

This is not an option for Sakurai or any huge official game like Smash.

In regards to the whole balancing thing, I agree with Sakurai. Like he said, with complete balance personality is lost. Like, the only way complete balance could be achieved, would be that all characters have the same move-set just re-skinned and no one wants that even more than they don't want imbalance. But this means while it WILL be balanced pretty well they will keep a slight priority on variation.

Even if he does all of the hit boxes and frames himself, it's not like they aren't going to look over everything he has done before releasing it.

That's right, at the very least Namco will be able to point out major flaws before the games release, hopefully. Only problem, with that is Sakurai has gone on record saying that even among the testers, their opinions can't be fully trusted. Paraphrasing of course but that's basically what he said. I could just imagine the whole team screaming about the tornado and Sakurai just ignoring them all.

Some people here are reading too much into Sakurai's balance comment. As in "since he's not targeting perfect balance, that means it'll be an uber-crappy casual cheesefest". Maybe, but until I see more video footage, I'm putting my faith in Sakurai. Cautious optimism for me. :)

I suspect he's heard the complaints about Brawl, and will address them in some fashion. Innocent until proven guilty.

Just read his comment as it is. If he OVER-balances, the game will become stale. I'm sure the hardcore competitive players would love that, but what about everyone else? I enjoy a balanced game, but if ALL of the focus is put on that, the rest of the game WILL suffer. It'll become dull and mechanical.

You can't fully balance everything.
Not with that attitude, you can't.

100% balance is impossible
It'll always be impossible with that attitude.

" nobody likes to hear a recording of their own voice "

Speak for yourself. Many people are definitely the opposite. Myself included.

"If we aim for complete fairness, there won’t be any personality to it."

...How does that even make any sense?

And people wonder why I facepalm in anguish when they call this looney a "genius".
