Sup SWF. I've been lurking around here for a little while now and I'm finally bored enough to make a post. The threads that interest me the most are the ones that discuss the future of competitive melee, since I really admire the game even though I'm pretty noob at it and I really hope to see it widely recognized as the classic that it is. Seeing as the boards are getting hyped up for Genesis 2, I checked out the thread and noticed that they're getting a $6k sponsorship from Saber Gaming. A quick search of SWF reveals they're sponsoring at least one other tournament. However, googling the name and removing results related to Star Wars hasn't enlightened me at all about who they are. The Genesis 2 brief says they're dedicated to helping out the Smash community, but as noble of an endeavor as that is, donating to the prize pools at underground video game tournaments isn't a business model.

I understand that getting their name out there is a big deal for a startup, and maybe they're already at a stage where a few thousand isn't seriously biting into their capital, but I guess my question is, what is their whole "get?" Are they trying to become the next MLG? Is there a website where we can find out what these guys are all about? Does anyone know anything else about our generous benefactor?

The dudes that run it are TheSaberGuy and VTS. Friends of mine from Arkansas. I'm not exactly sure how they do their business but I could certainly direct one of them to this topic and maybe they'll provide you with some more info.

In the past there were a bunch of large tournaments that had some scams in them so the goal of Saber Gaming right now is to put out a name thats trust worthy and to show that we mean business to make a company like MLG and EVO with bunch of different games.

The plan for the first Saber Gaming circuit is spring-fall next year with 3-6 tournaments (depending on if we get the venues we want and good dates).

Right now we have sponsored about 7 different tournaments for games of melee, brawl, street fighter, tekken, and quake just to throw few game names around.

For 2012 we plan just to do melee/brawl/n64 since this is a business we also feel that the current fees and everything can be expanded. Since we wish to do this as a side job making money from out sponsoring might be a while but don't expect to see crazy fees. The idea is for $25-35 Singles fee $40-50 Doubles fee, Some might say thats little high but compared to evo and mlg thats little low. Everything is subject to change

The community is little cheap so with the increase entry fee we also have plans to pay out more for lower ranking such as paying all the way out to 9th-13th depending on turn outs.

We don't have a website right now but we plan to have it out by the end of this year that has all the tournaments for next year posted as well early entry and hotel booking for cheaper at the start.

If you have any questions i'll try to answer them by either in this thread or by PM

This post is not very well put together sorry about that been practicing for Genesis so haven't got much sleep.

money lol

Think of it as a business point of view.

I dislike the game but if it's going to help keep this business alive then I'm all for it being in our tournaments.

They will be on different days also for those entering both melee and brawl.

Sounds tight. And I don't really have any more questions, I was just curious. Good luck with it, I'm sure this could really bring legitimacy back to competitive melee.

good luck dude, it sounds like an awesome project

you should see about selling ads on videos of tourneys you sponsered. if you use a revenue sharing site to host the vids, it could help the model

also don't forget to use the ELO system we're working on that should be coming out...at some point...

If brawl sucks isn't that more of a reason to monetize it while you still can?

Brawl has a bit more content than a slot machine, yet people cram money into every orifice of those.

However, unlike slot machines, brawl does not have the depth to remain at a competitive level 10 years later like melee did. It will die whenever Nintendo pumps out the next wiimote/crassic-controller onry smash game.

Being the fickle creatures they are, many current brawl players left melee for brawl "because it was easier and looks better".
Doesn't it seem very likely that the same core group will leave fallin'-down metaknight game for the same reason when given the exact same choice in the future?

I'd say take their money while they're willing to give it to you!

n64? You're going to sponsor Smash 64 tournaments?

I officially love you. I hope you become a trillionaire and live to be 500.

He's already 504 and also a Quadrillionaire. Does this mean you wish he was dead and had less money?

Ok I'm kidding. I'll admit, most of that story was made up.

^I totally would have fallen for your story if it wasn't for the heads up! Thanks!

Ok I'm kidding. I'll admit, most of this post was sarcastic.
