Have you wondered what SSB started today instead if 21 years ago (24 now)? If you have, you can post your rosters for this situation.
If you want a challenge, make rosters sizes for 12, 20, 26 (both with and w/o 6 echoes), 30, 35, 39, 45, and 50 characters.
If you want, you can explain why you added the characters you chose.
Additional challenge, this is the number of secret characters you must have in each roster:
4 in the 12 character roster
7 in the 20 character roster
11 in the 26 character roster
12 in the 30 character roster (anything after this is probably unrealistic)
14 in the 35 character roster
16 in the 39 character roster
18 in the 45 character roster
20 in the 50 character roster
Here are mine
I decided to only go up to 40 as anything after 30 seems unrealistic, and I’d assume 26 is most likely:

Luigi and Peach: I feel like Nintendo would choose these characters for supplementary Mario fighters
Samus: She was Nintendo’s/gaming’s first mainstream woman protagonist
Byleth: Three Houses is the most popular game in Fire Emblem, but (s)he’d probably be closer to Robin in terms of moveset where (s)he uses swords and faith for attacks. While Melee did help introduce Fire Emblem to the West, SSB wasn’t the main motivator for Awakening’s sucess, and the series would have still been given Western releases during the GBA era.
Olimar: Nintendo seems to hold Pikmin to a high level of significance
Shulk: Xenoblade is a growing series, and he’s the most established character at this time.
If we had secret fighters, it would probably be Luigi, Samus, Donkey Kong, and Olimar.
Honorable Mentions:
Yoshi: Another major Mario character, but the Yoshi franchise feels less relevant today, and I’d probably add Peach or Bowser before Yoshi for a third Mario character.
Pokemon: I actually don’t think The Pokemon Company would support SSB initially.

(DJ Octavio)
Yoshi, Wario, and Bowser would probably be additional Mario fighters for the roster.
I assume that Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Splatoon would have additional fighters.
While they’re less relevant today, I feel like Miis would be playable here at some capacity.
These fighters really represent the most prominent franchises, so I think we could pick a deeper cut, and I assume Star Fox would probably be the first deep cut franchise to prioritize.
Honorable Mentions:
Pokemon: I think that it would take a few more fighters before we go into Pokemon territory
Sonic: I think I’d need a few more slots before going into third parties.
Secret fighters would probably be Bowser, Wario, Olimar, Samus, Fox, Isabelle, DJ Octavio.
Clones:
If I added clones, I’d choose Metal Mario, Daisy, a Child Link, Falco, a Pikmin Captain and Octoling as my clones. In this case, the first three unlockable characters become starters.

(DJ Octavio)

I’ll first bring in Pokemon and third parties, which would probably be Pikachu, Charizard, Sonic, and Pac-Man.
For other fighters, I could see Fire Emblem and Kirby expanding, and I think Lucina and King Dedede would bring forth unique archetypes. Lucina is here as she’s more popular than Marth.
Honorable Mention
Ganondorf: Other priorties were made
Secret Fighters would probably be Wario, Bowser, Samus, Lucina, King Dedede, Fox, Olimar, Isabelle, DJ Octavio, Pac-Man, Sonic

Tinkaton: She’s the placeholder for the new promotional pokemon.
Ganondorf: I think some version of Ganondorf would be prioritized at this point.
Aegis: I think a transforming fighter would be good to have, and I’m unsure if a playable Pokemon Trainer would be allowed. It would probably be caused from the same issues when Rex was added.
Secret fighters would probably be Wario, Samus, Ganondorf, Lucina, King Dedede, Fox, Tinkaton, DJ Octavio, Aegis, Sonic, Pac-Man
At this point, I think the roster is pretty complete.

Rosalina and Bowser Jr.: Another Mario character or two feels justified, and they seem like the most interesting options.
Diddy Kong: He helps expand Donkey Kong Country a little bit.
Alear: Think of her/him as kind of like Joker with Arsene when (s)he engages with Marth, but I guess this could also go to a placeholder Fire Emblem fighter, maybe Lyn?
Bandana Waddle Dee: I think another Kirby character could be squeezed in here, and he is a popular side character in Kirby.
Tom Nook: Animal Crossing is huge, and he’s one of the main characters.
Pit and Ness: These are my next deep cut picks as I’d think they’re more interesting than Little Mac and Captain Falcon, and I’m sure that Icies and the surprise fighters wouldn’t have crossed my mind.
Ryu: If SSB just started, I feel like Street Fighter would be a larger priority than Mega Man as a tribute to fighting games.
Cloud/Tidus: I like FF, and I prefer X over VII, so if I can get Tidus, I’d choose him.
Secret Fighters: Bowser Jr, Rosalina, Wario, Diddy Kong, Ganondorf, Lucina, Alear, King Dedede, Tinkaton, Fox, Pit, Ness, Tom Nook, Aegis, DJ Octavio
I found a thing online for making a 32 character base roster where the series started around with a game having Ultimate’s development cycle give or take.

The relevant franchises at the time of development were Super Mario and sister series, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem (I’m confident that the series would have survived without Melee), Kirby, Star Fox, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Rhythm Heaven, Wii, Xenoblade, and Splatoon. From these franchises, the only ones where I need to delve into a little more are Super Mario, Fire Emblem, and Pokemon. From the Super Mario franchise, the first half of the 2010s was a great time for Rosalina, and I think Toad could lend himself to an interesting fighter, and a Toadette clone is a nice bonus. My Fire Emblem choices seemed weird, but Fates had the perfect timing at this point, and Chrom highlights the series’s renaissance. Pokemon is weird, but I’m sure the Pokemon Company would have wanted Pikachu, Charizard, and an Alola pokemon. I think Incinoroar’s wrestler archetype works pretty well even if it’s two fire type Pokemon. The last things to cover are dormant franchises. From the dormant franchises that I can think of: Excitebike, Punch Out!!, Duck Hunt, Kid Icarus (assuming that Uprising never happens in this timeline), Mother, F-Zero, Golden Sun, I think that Isaac and Ness interest me the most as fighters.
When going into the Fighters’ Passes, I’m going to treat these as a toe dip into third parties for the first pass, and then I’ll add an additional one in the second. For Fighters’ Pass one, I could see this being used to help promote some newer games in the Switch cycle, In this case, I’ll use it to promote ARMS, Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Three Houses, but Byleth instead uses swords and magic to attack. I have very little to say on Sonic and Pac-Man. I went with Sidon mostly because he was a notable side character.
For Fighters’ Pass 2, I’m adding the SSBFor DLC fighters as the first two were prominent names, and Bayonetta helps build relations between Nintendo and Sega. For the remaining fighters, I went with other characters to promote Switch era games with New Horizons and Splatoon 2. For the last character, I wanted to add a Pokemon Trainer, and here they are. They would only switch between Espeon and Umbreon. Admittedly, this idea is influenced by Wes in Colloseum than anything else.

Toad/Waluigi: I find Rosalina and Bowser Jr. more interesting for a fighting game
King K. Rool: He hasn’t been relevant for awhile.
Ridley: While he’s a major character from Metroid, the series is less relevant compared to others today.
Pokemon Trainer: The gimmick would be too complex for me, and I don’t know how to make a standalone trainer work.
Mewtwo, Lucario, Greninja, and Jigglypuff: I just prioritized other Pokemon
Captain Falcon: A character I would not imagine adding
Meta Knight: This is just a case of priorities.
Little Mac: Mostly, this is just a lack of interest than anything else.
Marth: Most of his prominence comes from Melee than anything else
Ice Climbers and surprise fighters: I wouldn’t imagine them
Mega Man: I had other priorities in terms of third parties
