So, I think I may be on to something. I went to a character page on the Dojo, and replace character names for the hell of it, not expecting anything but the usual 404. However, I didn't get a 404. I got a message saying the address was "already in use." This worked for Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Lucario, and "Pokemon," presumably for the Pokemon Trainer. Sadly, Goomy gave a 404 instead. THIS IS NEWS, GUYS. But seriously, it means nothing, but I found it funny regardless.

No, what you're doing is trying to mold and force the word to work into what you want it to mean. You can't replace yourself so "Both" isn't even an option for replacement and Lucario didn't replace Mewtwo as has been said multiple times. You're trying to play this off as semantics when in reality that doesn't even work.

Mewtwo + lucario =/= Mewtwo

X + Y =/= X

The two combined together as one entity (that entity being that which fulfills the niche) is a different thing altogether. You can replace one thing with a different thing, even if one of the additives to that "different thing" is the same thing. If I hand you a pile of sugar, then take away that pile of sugar and sand, are you going to say your sugar wasn't replaced? If not, then why not go ahead and still sprinkle it on your wheaties? You presumably will not, because sugar alone and sugar mixed with sand are simply different things.

If Mewtwo alone is X, Lucario alone is Z, and both is Y, then X was replaced by Y, and Y was replaced by Z. Mewtwo's niche was eventually passed along to Lucario. The only difference is, the middle-man of "Y, both of them," doesn't exist in game releases, because Smash went form one game with Mewtwo, to one game with Lucario.

Mewtwo alone and Mewtwo with Lucario are separate entities. It's not a concern of "whether they're in or not," but a concern of which set-up is filling a very specific niche. What is occupying that one-of niche.

Not really, the masses can easily be mislead, misinformed, or misguided, and that does happen. That argument doesn't prove anything on its own.

Not sure what you're trying to say. "We can mislead people to make them think they're completely different" isn't exactly a rebuttal. That doesn't solve the problem of them not being different enough.

And Lucario and Mewtwo don't even share as many similarities as they do, so I don't see your point here.

I dunno about that. Being in the same franchise alone is a tough one to beat, but Lucario and Mewtwo definitely have more in common, conceptually, than Sheik and ZSS.

Even playing into this logic, they got in despite having the same "niche," so why does Lucario suddenly have to leave for Mewtwo?

I don't think both should have been in Brawl. Multiple characters fulfilling the same niche is a waste of space. I just have a feeling like Smash is going to rotate Fire Emblem characters and Pokemon. I'd have argued for "whatever generation 6's "special/movie pokemon turns out to be" a year and a half ago. It just happens to be that Mewtwo is getting special treatment, so I guess we rotate him back in.

In terms of concept they're still completely different. Lucario was built around his Aura mechanic, Mewtwo around being a psychic attacker, so that doesn't even connect.

"Aura" and "psychic" are both "energy/magic." It's both using something that's immaterial-but-not. This would be on par with saying that if Luigi shot ice balls, he'd be a "different concept" from Mario because it's ice, not fire, when really, it's still just shooting an "element ball."

And no, the second jump doesn't work. Mewtwo teleports, Lucario moves fast, Lucario has more in common with Pikachu's Quick Attack then that.

What determines a character is its personality that's what I put to show there completly different essences, looks don't determine a character so I didn't bother listing any of that. I'd never drop it. I'd agree that we don't all have the same perspective, But for everyone to tell me i'm straight up wrong is in itself wrong. And your limited definition of essence sure seems convenient as it backs up your argument. I say his essence is alot more than character and attitude, considering he doesn't exist. There is no physical Lucario, therefore everything about him. His physical traits, movements, swagger, the way he "physically" carries himself counts. You're fooling yourself if you think they designed him without Mewtwo in the back of their heads.

And for the record I would have loved, more than anything, to have played a game with Lucario and Mewtwo in a balanced fine tuned version of melee. I hope that's what 4 brings. Ideally i'd love it to bea huge roster of worthy characters, but like you, my definition of worthy is personally specific in regards to the matter.
