We all agree that "cuts happened because of time constraints." The question is, "Why Mewtwo as opposed to, Ike, or Zero Suit Samus, or Wolf?"

I assume because cutting the ones you listed would mean they would mean Marth, Samus would be alone, and Starfox would only have 2 rep. Pokemon would still have 4 slots, with 6 playable characters. Plus, Ike and ZSS were heavily involved in SSE. Add to the fact that ZSS was revealed in the first Brawl trailer.

Nevermind ZSS, but that still begs the question of Ike (Roy was an option.)

And perhaps star fox, a good series that was performing poorly in recent history/dying, only needed 2 reps, especially since they were so similar to each other.

Mewtwo alone in Melee was replaced by "both" in brawl which was subsequently replaced by Lucario alone in Brawl. In that sense, mewtwo was inevitably replaced by Lucario.

It's semantics over the word replace.

No, what you're doing is trying to mold and force the word to work into what you want it to mean. You can't replace yourself so "Both" isn't even an option for replacement and Lucario didn't replace Mewtwo as has been said multiple times. You're trying to play this off as semantics when in reality that doesn't even work.

I agree they were planned to be together. I'm looking at this in terms of concepts/looks/ "how it seems", which appeals more to the bulk/casual audience, and less in terms of movesets or playstyle, which becomes more important as you take it more seriously.

Not really, the masses can easily be mislead, misinformed, or misguided, and that does happen. That argument doesn't prove anything on its own.

We have to have both Mario Bros. It's the Nintendo franchise, and they are always together.
I don't think ZSS and Sheik are a good comparison, because while they share the "alternate" and "female + unknown" concept, that's about it. More athleticism perhaps. Alongside that, I feel they're necessary if we're going to have Zelda or Samus (Sheik more so in 2001,) and I feel having both Zelda and Samus are necessary.

I think a better example is Ness & Lucas. To be honest, I really don't think we should have both of them, for the niche reason.

And Lucario and Mewtwo don't even share as many similarities as they do, so I don't see your point here.

Even playing into this logic, they got in despite having the same "niche," so why does Lucario suddenly have to leave for Mewtwo?

Not in sense of playstyle, moveset, or mechanics, no. But yes in terms of concept. Even if Luigi was completely "decloned" from Mario, he would remain a "conceptual clone," as he's still a "Mario Brother."

Should also note that they share a second-jump. Recovery move is same concept "go form one place to another immediately," but the means is different (teleport vs super-fast,) but at that point we're really pushing it.

In terms of concept they're still completely different. Lucario was built around his Aura mechanic, Mewtwo around being a psychic attacker, so that doesn't even connect.

And no, the second jump doesn't work. Mewtwo teleports, Lucario moves fast, Lucario has more in common with Pikachu's Quick Attack then that.
