Let me rephrase that.
Sakurai doesn't care about NEGATIVE responses to possible newcomer.
He is smart, he knows people are still gonna buy the game if it has one or two unpopular characters.

He does however, care about POSITIVE responses, as they will get him even more sales, because people will buy the game if it has their favorite character in it. And everyone was flipping out over Mega Man,

Lip for me. Tetris Attack was one of my favorite SNES titles growing up, plus a fairy character with flower magic would be pretty nifty. I wouldn't mind Dr. Mario's return or Layton though.

Villager

Yes he looks really fun.

Yeah Animal Crossing is important enough to Nintendo to warrant a character.

No. Due to Sakurai's previous statements on the character, I would have no idea he changed his mind.

Newer series could have their characters be playable.

Mega Man

Yes! Yes! Yes! He's one of my favorite characters in video games. And he looks really fun to use. And his slightly updated look is badass. My Mega Man hype is still going strong.

Yeah, Mega Man is a legendary character. And he has a closer connection to Nintendo than either Sonic or Snake. I feel like he could have gotten in first due to
merit alone.

Yeah, he's a popular character among Nintendo fans. Capcom doesn't mind shoving their characters in random crossovers. And he was second behind Sonic in request. That's saying something.

Yes. He has a mostly long ranged moveset. That alone makes him standout. Not to mention so many references to his games were packed into his movepool. It

1.- No. I just don't see the appeal of Animal Crossing.
2.- Yeah, because he's a main character for a popular franchise.
3.- I would've rated him 7/10, because Sakurai considered it a "peaceful" character.
4.- While it holds variety, I can't help but thinking he's ripping off from other characters. (BF, LM, YL, etc)
5.- He MAY pose a serious threat to Balloon Fighter.

1.- HELL YEAH! Megaman was my 2nd Videogame experience (right after Mario), been a huge fan ever since.
2.- Of course he deserves it. He should've been in Brawl but Sakurai and Inafune played hard to get.
3.- Assuming 3rd parties were returning, yes, he had the highest chances to get in.
4.- 5/10 due to the fact that we were in the dark regarding 3rd parties, but 9/10 if they had said they'd be back.
5.- He has an insanely awesome moveset.
6.- Not really, Megaman is a special case.
7.- Megaman is the MOST deserving 3rd party character. Other than him any character with close ties to Nintendo is welcome in my book (as long as it's not overdone) ((Must have been a long time supporter too))
8.- Capcom might be stingy for this... No, Sakurai won't force alt costumes on characters nilly willy.

1.- I hated her reveal because IMO it wasn't worth the 6 month wait... But I'm glad she's in.
2.- Yeah, Mario Galaxy redefined 3D platforming, and SMG2 became the new Best game of all time. So yeah.
3.- To be honest, I didn't think she would get in over more traditional characters.
4.- 4/10
5.- Yes, very interesting use of a "puppet" Luma.
6.- Well, I thought Starfy's days were numbered, and it turned out to be correct. Also, I'd rule out any other Mario character.

Are you glad that Villager is in Smash Bros? Why? Yes, not as much for who Villager is, but because he seems to have helped usher in a new era of Smash movesets, in which Sakurai drops his preconceived notions about "who should be fighting" and instead chooses the unique candidates.
Do you think he deserves it? Why? Sure. The (creepy as hell) face of probably the most major Nintendo series this side of Punch Out!! with no character.
Did you think he had a chance before his reveal? Why? I would have given him a sliver of a chance based on Sakurai shooting him down earlier, with said sliver hinging on Sakurai's mind changing, in which case he'd be a borderline lock.
Before his reveal, what would you rated his likeliness as? (1-10) 2. Based on the quote mostly.
Do you think he has an interesting moveset? For the most part, yes. While his Game & Watch-esque moves of swinging props don't interest me, his more complex strategies involving the tree, burying opponents and stealing projectiles are cool.
Do you think his reveal means anything in regards to other possible characters? Aside from the bit about uniqueness being even more visible as a top priority, not really. Although Sakurai's Developer Direct comment about "the long-awaited Villager joining the battle" could hint at him looking at other long-awaited characters as well.
Do you think he will recieve a female Villager alt? Maybe. He Fit Trainer boosts the chances of this a fair bit.

Mega Man
Are you glad that Mega Man is in Smash Bros? Why? Yes. I'm not a huge fan of the character, but the content his series features is cream of the crop, especially the music, and he was always one of the most interesting characters Sakurai could have possibly added IMO. He's also a solid testament to Sakurai listening to the fans, with Mega Man being the most requested newcomer worldwide, rather than just "who are other people promoting in their games."
Do you think he deserves it? Why? 100%. His history with Nintendo speaks for itself, regardless of what the Mega Man trolls from GameFAQs said in COUNTLESS threads (notice, it's rare to see said trolls on GameFAQs post-E3). I also do not have a bug up my arse about third party characters being a thing, so long as enough fans want them in.
Do you think he had a chance before his reveal? Why? Absolutely. The return of third parties after Sakurai's happiness with Snake and Sonic was blatantly obvious, and Mega Man was the clear next in line, with no known disadvantages other than possible disagreement on Capcom's end, which I doubted based on Inafune wanting Mega Man in Smash on some podcast pre-Brawl, as well as a panel of Capcom developers discussing that he'd be the character they'd choose to add.
Before his reveal, what would you rated his likeliness as? (1-10) 9.8. I was one of few calling this guy a borderline lock prior to release. A fair number were hung up on the (idiotic) idea that third parties MIGHT be cut, while others thought he had an okay chance, hindered by "Capcom having no reason to advertise him over other characters."
Do you think he has an interesting moveset? I really like his projectile focus. I'm curious how competitively competent it will be in the long run, though.
Do you think his reveal means anything in regards to other possible characters? Sakurai is listening to the fans, both before Brawl (Mega Man got requests in Sakurai's journal) and after Brawl (Mega Man grew in popularity after Sonic's reveal), and doesn't care about who other developers "hate," "don't care about," "are retiring" or "are shoving under the rug" nearly as much as some seem to believe.
Do you think third party characters have a place in Smash? The right third party characters have a place in Smash. They enhance the "fantasy match-up" component of Smash that so many, including myself, adore within the series.
Can you think of any possible alts? No, but that's only because I'm hideously unfamiliar with the series.

Wii Fit Trainer
Are you glad that Wii Fit Trainer is in Smash Bros? Why? No. I'm not a big fan of shock characters as a concept, but I could stomach one that lived up to the moveset standard set by the other three newcomers. But she...doesn't. Her biggest contribution is allowing for unfunny joke pics involving her buttocks. And she epitomizes people lapping up any and all additions to Smash as The Almighty Sakurai's gift from above, which is grating.
Do you think she deserves it? Why? Yes. Wii Fit sold fairly well, thus justifying a shock character from it. A character deserving to be in doesn't necessarily mean they should be in, however.
Did you think she had a chance before her reveal? Why? No. No one did, contrary to what the "LOL LUCKY GUESS" faction has convinced itself. This is probably because most were so focused on comprehensively digging past into the past to find shock characters like Game & Watch or ROB, they missed what was right in front of them in the present.
Before his reveal, what would you rated her likeliness as? (1-10) 0.5. I'd not have immediately written her off as impossible, but merely told her to get in line with the other shock character suggestions and hope to catch Sakurai's eye.
Do you think she has an interesting moveset? Not at all. Sure, her animations are unique, but all of her attacks are generic Wire Frame hits that render her a bland balanced fighter. I'm really hoping some future moveset reveal from her will change this, but I doubt it.
Do you think her reveal means anything in regards to other possible characters? No; she does not, in fact, render every single sentence of speculation prior to E3 invalid because "SAKURAI WANTS TO ONLY ADD NEW SERIES CHARACTERS" (hi, Rosalina!). We were always going to get some at least one shock character, we now just have to wait and see whether we'll get another closer to release.
Do you think He Fit Trainer is an alt of some kind? Yes, I believe he'll be a gender-based equivalent to Overalls Wario. And if there's one upside to WFT being in, it's her potentially ushering in more characters alts, though it shouldn't have come to that in the first place.

Rosalina & Luma
Are you glad that Rosalina & Luma are in Smash Bros? Why? I'm lukewarm on her. I would have preferred Bowser Jr. to be added because I would have liked a paint mechanic, but I never cared too much about his inclusion, and if it wasn't him, whoever was added would be met by a simple headnod and a "next" by yours truly.
Do you think they deserves it? Why? In terms of being an important Mario character, she's outclassed by a few others, but she's still not an unimportant one-off, so yes, albeit not as firm a yes as the other three.
Did you think they had a chance before their reveal? Why? A minimal chance. I figured she'd become a Peach color scheme or maybe a semi-clone. I didn't think a Mario newcomer would be a priority in general for Sakurai, though, based on none really standing above the pack from my perspective.
Before his reveal, what would you rated their likeliness as? (1-10) 1, based on my faulty above evaluation. Rosalina apparently stood above the pack to Sakurai because of Luma.
Do you think they have an interesting moveset? Absolutely. The puppetmaster stuff has been praised every which way since its reveal, but I'm also fascinated by her Star Icon Down Special, seen as a way to draw in friendly items and deflect enemy projectiles. I'm interested in learning more about how the Luma's color affects gameplay.
Do you think their reveal means anything in regards to other possible characters? As with Villager, Rosalina indicates that uniqueness really is Sakurai's greatest priority. Personally, she made me more cautious to pigeonhole characters as semi-clone material, given she's the only real newcomer of similar stature to a veteran to not become one. I'm also putting thought into which new appearances are significant enough to potentially boost a character's prospects; for Rosalina, this is different from saying "LOL SHE'S RELEVANT, SHE'S A LOCK," it's recognizing the importance of her rising from helper to playable in a mainstream Mario game and speculating accordingly.
Do you think they gave the 3DS problems? They are a duo character, so maybe Sakurai was referring to them, although I think the 3DS is vastly overstated as a source of development problems to begin with.
Can you think of any possible alts? Give her Peach and Daisy color schemes, along with Fire Rosalina, I guess.

The amount AC has done to shift handheld consoles alone should warrant the inclusion of an AC character. Although Tom Nook seemed more obvious due to Villager's customisable appearance, Villager is the superior choice since he's the protagonist. Of sorts.

For the same reason as many others; Sakurai said he was too peaceful. Now he's a meme for violence. Oh, the irony!

The most interesting to me. The ability to pick up projectiles? That alone makes him fascinating, let alone all the other crazy abilities he's been given.

I think it means characters with customisable appearances have a better shot. Here's looking at Robin/My Unit in particular. Unfortunately his balloons also seem to deconfirm Balloon Fighter. With the way he works, I'm not entirely certain what Mii could offer that Villager cannot now.

Considering Animal Crossing was far more popular with the female demographic than Wii Fit was with the male demographic as a rule? I should flipping hope so. I know a lot of girls that will be furious if they don't get their female alt but Wii Fit Trainer gets a male alt.


Mega man

I don't really care. Never grew up with Megaman, never played a Megaman game, and the character doesn't really entice me. I'm happy for his fans, but this is the one newcomer I saw coming.

Popular enough to be considered legendary I guess. Less so than Sonic, but more than Snake IMHO.

Do you think he had a chance before his reveal? Why?

Yes: Huge fan demand. It worked for Sonic, there was little doubt it would also work with Megaman.

9. Not a full 10 as I wasn't sure if we were getting any new 3rd parties, although if we did it was Megaman first and foremost.

Actually yes. Sakurai's done a good job on him in Smash from what I've seen. The animations, the fighting style and everything else seems to replicate the styles of the games really well. Looks like Smash may be the first time I play as Megaman.

Maybe something for Pac-Man. MAYBE. Only legendary 3rd parties are making it in and Pac-Man is the only one who even comes close to Sonic and Megaman.

No. Honestly I dislike their inclusion. This started off as a "Nintendo All Star" game and now we're stuck with 3rd Parties being suggested everywhere because Sakurai was unable to say no to his friend's request to include Snake. I like my friends but I wouldn't let them include a drawing in a graphic design piece for work merely because we're buddies.

No idea. This is the only Megaman design I actually like judging by the pictures friends have showed me.


Wii Fit Trainer

Umm. Less so now than when she was originally revealed. She seems less impressive after Rosalina and the additional Villager info we've received. Currently she seems about as impressive as a playable wireframe.

Do you think she deserves it? Why?

Technically? She did do wonders for Wii sales. She's not really what you could call an "All Star" though which is probably why there was no support for her before her reveal.

Did you think she had a chance before her reveal? Why?

No, I am but a mere mortal like the rest of the Smash speculation scene.

0. 1 implies someone thought about it.

Only thing it means is Sakurai enjoys his little shock characters for the sake of them being shock characters. Hopefully it means we won't have too many more unless their movesets are insanely fun.

Yes. I'm fairly confident in it, but I'm sure as soon as I get behind the idea 100% it'll turn out to be a goddamn Assist Trophy.


Rosalina & Luma

Are you glad that Rosalina & Luma are in Smash Bros? Why?

No. No one saw that one coming did they? Hoho! Actually I'm mostly indifferent to Rosalina as a character which in a way is worse. If it was Toad I'd be overjoyed he was playable. If it was Bowser Jr. I could at least take solace in that I could kick his dumb little face in. Rosalina I'm so neutral on I just feel nothing for the first time on a Mario newcomer; just empty indifference. It's actually a worse feeling than if someone I HATED got in.

Do you think they deserves it? Why?

Galaxy was a huge game, as the name would imply. However I feel like she skipped the line. Toad, Jr and Waluigi have all been far more prominent within the Mario series and should probably have got in before her.

Like many I thought Jr., Toad, Waluigi, Paper Mario or Doc were more likely. She was always in a better position than any other Mario character though(King Boo, Daisy, Birdo, etc)

Maybe like 4? Even after Toad's deconfirmation I wouldn't have placed her in the top 3 most likely Mario newcomers.

Because of Luma, Rosalina does have an interesting moveset focusing on combos and puppetry and it's actually pretty cool. I'm sure when I get to play as her I'll probably warm up to the character due to the moveset.

Honestly don't see us getting another Mario character now so that shoots Bowser Jr., Waluigi, Doc, Paper as well as my most wanted newcomer down in flames. Pity.

I certainly wasn't expecting him. I had a strange feeling that we'd get a new series character, but I wasn't expecting Villager. I actually didn't believe that stuff about how the Villager can't fight, because it came from the same guy who gave two racers a complete and awesome moveset. His moveset looks great, can't wait to play as him. I think AC deserved a rep, but Tom Nook instead.

Mega Man
Mega Man is cool. He has oodles of history with the Big N', and I couldn't think of a better 3rd party. Great moveset, too.

Wii Fit Trainer
A great WTF character, she/he surprised me a lot. The moveset looks amazing, like Sakurai made it with love. Ready to get fit, am I!

Rosalina and Luma
Don't have an opinion, but I certainly like Bowser Jr. better. She looks like fun to play as, but I can't say until I play.

A mixed reception at best. The negative parts are mostly due to the fact that Rosalina was only really a supporting character before her playable inclusion in Super Mario 3D World.

While the idea of using two characters at the same time is nothing new, in Rosalina's case, the Luma does offer her more versatile options for handling her opponents. And unlike the Ice Climbers, Rosalina can always summon a new Luma if the other one falls. Lastly, Rosalina doesn't necessarily need to rely on the Luma, while the Ice Climbers need to stick together to be effective in combat.

If anything, this doesn't really have a negative impact on a potential 6th Mario rep, as Bowser Jr. has made a name for himself as well. Also, the Pokemon franchise got away with having 6 playable Pokemon in Brawl, despite the fact that three of the Pokemon were owned by the Pokemon Trainer.

Hard to say. If the Ice Climbers can work on the 3DS, then any doubts would likely be erased. On the other hand, in Pokemon X/Y, the horde battles often cause the game to lag when making commands.

Mega man

Are you glad that Mega Man is in Smash Bros? Why? I wasn't a huge advocate for his inclusion, but I'm happy that everyone is happy!
Do you think he deserves it? Why? Mega Man is so popular, it doesn't make sense not to have him in the game. It works so well, all of these newcomers work so well.
Do you think he had a chance before his reveal? Why? Totally! In regards to third-parties, after Sonic and Snake, you had to put in Mega Man!

Do you think he has an interesting moveset? Almost fully projectile? Yes please!
Do you think his reveal means anything in regards to other possible characters? The selection for characters and third-parties is proving to be very difficult. You NEED to be unique and stand out.
Do you think third party characters have a place in Smash? Only if they are on par with the three we've seen. So, Pac-Man and that's it. If he gets more prominence, then Sora (but that's a bit of bias).
Can you think of any possible alts? ...I haven't played a Mega Man game in so long.

Wii Fit Trainer

Are you glad that Wii Fit Trainer is in Smash Bros? Why? I'm happy. It shows that Sakurai is thinking out of the box, and I think the choice is hilarious.
Do you think she deserves it? Why? Wii Fit is HUGE. I think she totally deserves to be in the game! She isn't some stupid WTF character, she actually has merits.
Did you think she had a chance before her reveal? Why? None at all! Looking back on it: why didn't we see this before!
Before his reveal, what would you rated her likeliness as? (1-10) 1
Do you think she has an interesting moveset? Come on. You have to give them an A for creativity. It's ridiculous, but it is so good!

Rosalina & Luma

Are you glad that Rosalina & Luma are in Smash Bros? Why? The Lumas are adorable, no question. Rosalina is my favorite Mario character, so I'm thrilled she's in!
Do you think they deserves it? Why? It makes sense. First, with a moveset like that, she deserves it. Second, she's getting so much attention it makes sense. Nintendo is really pushing her with all the games she's been in.
Did you think they had a chance before their reveal? Why? I thought that seniority and importance would dismiss Rosalina, giving the edge to Paper Mario, Toad, and Bowser Jr. She still had a chance, with all the marketing and attention she's getting, but I never thought she'd get over them.
Before his reveal, what would you rated their likeliness as? (1-10) 5.5
Do you think they have an interesting moveset? I LOVE her moveset. I am totally maining her, she looks so interesting. Finally, a puppeteer in Smash.
Do you think their reveal means anything in regards to other possible characters? This raises the bar very high for characters. I think Sakurai has run out of character ideas, and is only looking for the elite, and the uniqueness they have to offer. The selection process will be difficult.
Do you think they gave the 3DS problems? There may be some difficulty with it, but I'm positive that Sakurai and his team will find their way through it.
Can you think of any possible alts? Honestly, not at all. Maybe Polari can be another Luma?

1. Yes I'm glad that Villager is in Super Smash Bros. as his presence spawns another fountain of amusing memes and it annoys me when a series is represented with a stage but no playable character.
2. He deserves a spot as he brings something new with his move-set such as his item/projectile catching.
3. He had a chance as Sakurai needed some surprises up his sleeve.
4. I would rate the Villager's likeliness of his inclusion before his reveal as 7.
5. He certainly does have an interesting move-set such as the aforementioned item-catching.
6. His reveal may have hinted that Sakurai is interested in including characters that have failed to appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as originally intended.

1. Yes I'm glad he's in Super Smash Bros as his inclusion will attract a large number of new fans of the Super Smash Bros series similar to what Snake and Sonic had achieved.
2. He deserves it as much as other "legendary" third-party characters such as Snake, Sonic and Pac-Man as Sakurai stated himself that “I think Snake and Sonic joining were fantastic. It made many fans happy, and it broadened the Smash Bros arena." Mega Man has a large fan-base where including him will no doubt be extremely beneficial for the game.
3. Mega Man certainly had a chance before his reveal as he is one of the biggest gaming icons in the industry and that is important to Sakurai.
4. I would rate Mega Man's likeliness before his reveal as 11 though from a Capcom fan perspective it would be Zero considering the recent suffering the Mega Man series has received such as the cancellation of the series first 3DS game Mega Man Legends 3 .
5. His move-set is quite interesting as he uses the same weapons and abilities as he had done in the past though most of his attacks are projectile oriented which could potentially causes some problems if you rather not use projectile attacks depending on the situation.
6. His reveal shows that only the most iconic "legendary" third-party characters of the industry are able to be included in the Super Smash Bros series just as how Snake and Sonic had achieved and potentially Pac-Man.

1. I'm personally indifferent toward her inclusion as I wasn't aware she existed.

1. Yes I am glad that Rosalina & Luma are included in Super Smash Bros as she is one of the most popular Mario characters.
2. Yes they deserve it as popularity seems to be prioritize the most and she dose have quite a large fanbase.
3. Based on her recent trend of playable appearances and popularity it's pretty clear she had a strong chance.
4. HIS reveal? I am unsure who "his" reveal but if you are referring to Rosalina & Luma I would rate their likeliness as 9.
5. She does seem to have a complicated move-set but with the change in development such as Namco becoming involved it no doubt silence the voices of those who speak "X character will be a semi-clone of Y character."
6. It's pretty clear that female characters are held in higher regard this time so there could be more female inclusion such as Star Fox's Krystal.
