Anyway, new topic. If only one could stay, who should it be: Falco or Wolf?
Falco. I just like him more, that's about the extent of that, he's the only Star Fox character I like to play. Fox's hits are too weak (with the exception of U-Smash) and he falls too damn fast, where as with Wolf I can't for the life of me recover, plus he's all over the place. I have an easier time controlling Falco than either, and I do feel like he hits harder than Wolf too.

Though if we're talking importance? Teamwork is a big aspect of Star Fox despite it not being a multiplayer game, which makes Falco important in his own right, plus he has been there since the first game. But Wolf himself means much more to the franchise since he's the rival of Fox, and his actions means more for the storyline too. However, with Falco being a veteran times two, I do feel that he's more important to Smash Bros. I don't want either to go though, and I hope both make it in too.

I'd say more like 10 because :pichumelee: :linkmelee: :drmario: :roymelee: :mewtwomelee:.
I don't get it.

Are you saying that the removed Melee characters take away from the number of Brawl's characters?
(also, that is Link's icon, not Young Link's)

And on the subject of clones, I'm pretty glad they were put in Melee. While I would've loved to see Dedede in Melee, I think making 6 similar characters was actually better than making 1 unique character.

If not for the clones, Melee's roster would've looked like this. (minus Dedede)
Only 5 unlockables.

So we have 15 unique newcomers only 3 of them were semi clones.
So basing this, we we could have 15 unique newcomers again in SSB4
Sakurai has been saying that we shouldn't expect too many newcomers. Not only is it required that the game can be somewhat balanced, but they also have to try and bring back 35 characters too. With Melee to Brawl they only had to bring back 25 characters from Melee, so there was plenty of space to add newcomers, and even then 5 of them ended up getting cut. This time around, there won't be as many, and for good reasons. I'm only expecting 10 newcomers, 12 at max if there's some last minute additions like Dixie and Toon Zelda.

Moving on to the game's graphics, Sakurai's big question to answer was how the team would unify the world view. Brawl has many different characters from a variety of series, and they must all fit in the Brawl world. He also had to consider all the extra aesthetic details that could be added to characters because of the Wii's extra power, which would make the differences in character design stand out even more. "If we had Bugs Bunny fighting against a photo-realistic character, the result would be unnatural and visually disruptive," giving an example of the problem.
Wait a minute, a Nintendog is a photo-realistic puppy!

Aside from that, you'd have to be thick in the head to seriously think we're getting a Nintendog when:
a) Sakurai doesn't see the damn thing as fighting material. (inb4villager; he did see Villager as fighting material, just not as fitting within Smash's vibe in Brawl's time)
b) A Nintendog is incapable of performing the most basic of functions required of all Smash characters.
c) It's a ****ing puppy.

I see, but the premise of a puppy fighting would still be hilarious, unless he sees DHD as a better alternative.

Why is Smashboards not letting me comment? Strange...

EDIT: I've tried replying to other comments but I can't. Oh well.

I don't think 15 newcomers is completely out of the question, but I think it would be best to estimate anything from 10-14.

I know, it is acting like the General Discussion thread. The only reason I don't participate there is because it takes like 5 refreshes to post a comment. Haha.

Anyways, 15 newcomers, I honestly think it is out of the question. I mean maybe if we get 6 or 7 cuts. We got 16 for Brawl and 14 for Melee, asking for much more would be ludicrous. We have to consider the proportionality of the roster.

Really Smashboards? Why you no let me post?

Anyways, @Morbid

Brawl cut 5. 2 of which were real close to being done (Roy, Mewtwo) one who was replaced (Young Link with Toon Link) one who was purposely scrapped (Pichu) and then the good doctor. I'd make the argument that Mewtwo and Roy could've been in the game had it not been for Sonic, and if that had been the case, we'd have a roster of 40. This time, there isn't any character that matches the demand of Sonic, and therefore it is highly unlikely we'd see a delay like the sort we saw for brawl.

Brawl added 18 new characters. 6 or 7 cuts would NEVER happen. Even if 15 additions were planned. There would be more cuts for less characters than Brawl? A game that was damn close to not having any unintentional cuts? I don't think so.

Do I think 15 is likely? Not really. Is less than 10 likely? Not really. 10-14 should be expected based on profit motive and past roster expansions. The least ever added was 12, so I would say that that is what we may get for Smash WiiU/3DS.

Do you have a copy of that transparent Melee roster with the clones?

Yes, but we are not taking Sakurai's ideal roster mentality into consideration. As he stated, he thinks that the roster is feasible as is. I am inclined to agree with him. Rosters with an insane amount of characters have heart, but they are not realistic. The balance is important, I am not talking about competitive balance either. There is an arbitrary number of characters that you can add without the game feeling redundant. Let us not forget that a lot of the newcomers in Melee were clones (most of which were cut or replaced). Sakurai and his team are creative people, that is the wonder of Smash. However, asking them to create and implement more than 50 characters is ridiculous. It is easy to make a move-set when you only have to create a few, it is easy when you don't consider certain limitations on the console, it is easy when you aren't aware of how the game is made. Once you start creating some move-sets with that lens on... it is more difficult. So naturally they are running out of creative new ideas that can ACTUALLY work. Obviously they haven't completely run dry and we will get quite a few newcomers. I just think that 15 is crazy given the circumstances. The other games had the power to add more characters because they weren't reaching the imminent "end". If he wants to expand the roster that much (which I doubt, given his intentions that might not be current) we are going to experience cuts. Not big cuts. Cuts like Pokemon Trainer (that is 3 newcomers right there) or pseudo-clones like Lucas and maybe even Falco (unless he decides to change up their move-sets).

I am just trying to contemplate the scenario as I go, don't read too much into it. It is my attempt at rationalizing the possibilities.

Now the key phrase here is, "out of the question". I don't think 15 characters is out of the question. I do think that it is HIGHLY unlikely.

Let's start a debate as to whether or not Sakurai would include CD-i Sheik alongside CD-i Zelda.
