DISCLAIMER: I did a search and couldn't find anything on this (I won't lie, i'm pretty terrible at using the search system).

First off, I come from the future and in the future, we all use the classic controller. So this may not apply to you people from the past using gc controllers with your unfortunately crippled L and R buttons.

Now to the good stuff.
I found that the only time i EVER use the R button was while doing dashing shield grabs (and cging with ddd. But in the future everyone realizes marth is the greatest character ever and stops using ddd altogether). I also never understood how people could consistently utilt and uair (if you don't use the cstick [use the cstick its way better]) without jumping. Yet the general consensus is that you should leave tap jump on so you can do jc usmashes out of shield, and ds out of shield.
But I decided to take this to the next level (or, to an equivalent level with greater simplicity). By reassigning my R button to jump and relearning shield grabbing using L, I have effectively left tap jump off while, at the same time, enabling myself to do usmashes and ds out of shield.

I tested these in training at 1x, 2/3x, and 1/2x speeds. Reassigning the button DOES allow you to do these moves with tap jump off, resulting is much faster retaliation once an attack has been shielded.

Hope this helps all marths (and possibly others) who can't stand tap jump being on. And yes, I understand that many of you must have figured this out already, but as stated in the disclaimer, I couldn't find anything on it.

the only time i ever used the R button was to wavedash in melee. its totally untouched for me in brawl, so i actually assigned it to B moves instead of jump. i found pressing X+R easier than pressing B+R. either way, you get the same effect and it works as if you have tap jump on.

I never understood why people need to change controls just to make something easier lol.

Especially when it's already easy >_>.

^this for the most part.
Honestly, whenever you feel the need to change controls, ask yourself if the problem can be solved by an hour to even 5 minutes of practice. It's such a pain if every time you play on a new wii you have to go "oh wait I need to change my controls" *insert people groaning here*

The only time I ever feel the need to change controls is:
Falco's Illusion being set to a shield button so I can phantasm quickly.
Tap off for U-tilts for most
And Tap on for MK.

Thats pretty much it.

I guess with a gc its different. I reassigned the controls on the classic to mimic the gc ones (the bottom button attack, right jump, left special), but since the throw buttons are in very awkward positions i reassigned that to y (so i can z catch bananas when i play as/against diddy). Since hitting the right-most button (jump) then the left-most button (for DS) is far more difficult and costly (time-wise), i assigned it to R.

And i guess the point i was trying to make is that having jump tap on is not the only way to do the usmash/ds out of shield, for those who didn't know (i thought it had to be on til i tested this)

well, i've just grown so accustomed to playing with tap jump off. i tried learning DS oos with tap jump on, but i kept accidentally jumping. i mean, if it accomplishes the same purpose, i find R+X less error prone.
