Don't give up hope just yet, it looks like the ballot definitely played a big part in Ultimate, and the Omni fiasco was right in time to spark massive interest in Rayman for that. And we know that Ubisoft knows about that as well, with them being this close to Nintendo and having a Rayman trophy in the last game in the first place, they're definitely in a position to ask for a character in Smash themselves as well. One more crossover between them, right?

Two thoughts just crossed my mind.

First, though Rayman does have his disconnected foot in the door for Smash with the trophy, who's to say his trophy status won't just ne upgraded to Assist Trophy? Much as I don't want to see it happen, Bomberman shows us third parties can be assists rather than be forced into playable representation for their franchise.

Now, for a lighter thought, Snake still has his choking pummel. Weird though it was to see on children and soon enough a literal dog, but... um... how exactly would that work for Rayman? He has no neck! Rayman vs. Snake matchup confirmed heavily in Rayman's favor.

Bomberman is an assist, but there's still a playable character from Konami as well in Snake. It's not impossible that we could get an entirely random third party assist, but I still doubt it. If Rayman were an assist, then I'd fear the worst happened with some other Ubisoft character being playable instead...

If Rayman were an assist, then I'd fear the worst happened with some other Ubisoft character being playable instead...

You know, it's nice that Rayman is one of the few characters who isn't deconfirmed just yet.

I know nothing about how implementing characters in Smash works, but I always found it odd that Rayman, one of the more popular (or at the very least) well known characters never got a decent mod. I wonder if the fact he lacks limbs makes him difficult to pull off. Seeing that Sukapon, a fellow limbless fighter, is now an AT, I wonder if, if worse comes to worse, Rayman may finally be able to get a decent mod using Sukapon as a reference.

It's certainly a possibilty and one we should prepare ourselves for.

And as JamesDNaux said there's also the fact that Bomberman is a character from Konami, which already has a character represnted. So while it's not impossible to have Rayman as an Assist Trophy without a Ubisoft fighter, it certainly seems less likely.

I really hope so, that's the only way I'd want Rabbids in Smash. Unless they're, like, the funnest character to ever grace the roster, keep that shizz at home, in the Mushroom Kingdom, or on DK Island, Ubisoft. Please.

I don't think anyone ever believes a leak 100%. Everyone knows to take caution. The idea of the leak just gets people excited to varying degrees.

True, but people getting too attached to leaks in the past, especially during Smash 4 speculation. Still, people have been taking more caution sense then.

And oddly enough, I think it's Artsy Omni's Rayman leak that caused that a new wave of skepticism when it comes to leaks.

Makes sense. It was probably the most well done, believable leak ever, and it turned out to be fake.

Ya so far there's nothing to disprove him but at the same time alot of people could have luckily guessed that it would bring back all veterans. The details he hinted at in his posts back in April are technically right though so idk. Like I said, small grain of salt but I hope it's real. Might be low-key biased cause I always thought Murphy as a final smash and globox as an assist trophy would make the most sense if they didn't use rabbids in his final smash or assist trophy

I posted this in the Ultimate General Discussion thread following the news of the project plan being finalized in December 2015 and I wanted to share it here.

Spoiler: My Thoughts on the Project Plan

Given the fact that Smash Ultimate's project plan was finalised in December 2015, that most likely means Sakurai did not know about Mario + Rabbids.
This potentially means that the Rabbids, along with Spring Man and Rex & Pyra, came along too late to be considered for the base game. Granted, the Rabbids have been a successful franchise since the Brawl days, but the demand for the Rabbids to appear only started to grow with Mario + Rabbids due to it being a high profile Switch exclusive. However, the game came out in August 2017, which was about a year and a half after Ultimate's finalization in December 2015. At this rate, the Rabbids could make an appearance as an AT unless if Sakurai wants to make them a DLC fighter.
What does this timing mean for Rayman, then? Well, a lot, actually.
For starters, Rayman Legends was still a pretty recent game as it released in September 2013. It was one of the few high profile third party games on the Wii U. Additionally, you could make an argument that Rayman's popularity was at its peak during the Ballot era due to the three trophies in Smash 4 and the fake Omni leak. Whether that popularity would get him in over other candidates is entirely debatable since none of us know the top requested characters on the Ballot other than Cloud, Bayonetta, and maybe Snake. We also don't know how popular Rayman really is outside of Smashboards, but you can say the same thing about every other potential newcomer.
As for Sakurai not knowing about Ubisoft's extensive support, I don't really think that's an issue. Besides the fact that Ubisoft was the biggest supporter of the Wii U, you could argue that this aspect does not matter much for a character's inclusion since Konami did not really support the Wii U and 3DS back then. Despite this, though, not only did we get Snake back (as well as David Hayter!), but if the leaks are to be believed, then Simon Belmont may very well happen.
By no means is Rayman a guarantee. His biggest obstacle is the lack of Japanese popularity. However, Rayman already has his foot in the door with three trophies as well as decent popularity. As a result, I do think the timing of this project plan bodes well for him.

I would speak about this, but GaroMaster pretty much hit the nail on the head.

At the very least, I don't think we'll have to worry much about a Rabbid being a playable fighter, at least in the base game.

What does this mean for Rayman? Well, perhaps nothing. But this does show that Ubisoft and Nintendo were willing to collaborate with each other before Ultimate's project plan came to be.
