Yes!!! I've been meaning to bring him up. That's Ed from Tonic Trouble on the N64, yo. Haha I actually played this one as a kid.
Great! A really obscure game, though I kind of wish they would do more with it. An Ed costume for Rayman in Legends or something. Hell, the General made a cameo in Rayman 2 when he sold the Grolgoth to Razorbeard.
Anyway, I agree on you about the height. I can see the original Rayman matching Mario's height, but I see the current Rayman being at least as tall as Luigi and his hair making his height close to Falco's at most.
Well, Sonic, Pac-Man, and Mega Man are all around Mario's height, despite the fact that Classic Sonic would be that tall, and newer Sonic would be taller, and Pac-Man probably being smaller. I also went by any instances of Rayman standing next to actual people, like that certain Rayman 3 ad, and the Legends ad with Snoop Dogg. Rayman has always been a pretty small character.

If they make Ray small, it would somewhat hard to see his hands in white areas since he has no limbs so you cant see which part connects to show what animation hes in, I just made no sense I guess, but his head is actually pretty small, so are his hands.

Heh, looks like I had the upper hand this time!
Also, bonus quiz-thing time!

Awesome fan points to anyone who can recognize what this pallet is based on!
Isnt that that tonic trouble character guy? I remember him where he was also a test for using the 3D function for Rayman, basically using the guy for a test and seeing if they can make Rayman a 3D platform
but seriously, his SSB4 3D trophy looks really amazing and not like those other Rayman 3D figures where they have really weird looking hair, 2 splits, example:

EDIT:Wait, what the hell? Was that really Snoop Dogg? I thought it was just some random kid, and when I seen the trailer in 2013 I actually thought he was some white kid.

Also, can anyone tell me what song this is at?

go to the 0:57 mark, I don't play origins.

His hands expand dong when he attacks, and the spinning of his fist would be noticeable enough, so there shouldn't be a problem.

Though in O/L he has a bit of a slouch, so he could be at Mario's height when hunched over, and taller when standing straight.

Yeah, Tonic Trouble was made by Ancel's team to test out the 3D engine, since they had never made a 3D game before then.

That particular image of Rayman looks weird (that tomato hair) but the original Rayman 2 render is one of my favorites.

Not the debut trailer, there was an unused (and unfinished) trailer that featured Snoop Dogg and a 3D Rayman.

And the song is "Rayman's Theme" from Origins. It also appeared as an 8 bit remix in Legends.

Rayman:Best fitting character for SSB4(the moveset)
Snake:Most badass character in SSB, literally, guns, choking for pummels, grabbing necks for grabs.

Just here to show my support for rayman, I remember playing his games when I was younger and I loved origins and legends, combine that with his extremely large moveset potential and I don't see why he shouldn't be in. It's just a shame ubisoft has been ******* over nintendo lately

Sure Ubisoft delayed Rayman Legends and putted it on multi-consoles, but so what? will that really stop putting a character in smash? Plus Ubisoft is one of the most supportive company to the Wii U
Konami didn't work on SSB one bit, Snake just got it from Kojima begging Sakurai or Sakurai liking Metal Gear Solid, no one really knows since there are other news.

Plus they gave us 3 trophies, why not just one rayman trophy and make Nintendo forget about Ubisoft? I have a feeling Rayman has a chance to get in, Rayman Legends was delayed, but they Nintendo still let Ubisoft give a Barbara and Globox trophy? Nintendo isn't forgetting Ubisoft at all. I also have a feeling Nintendo asked Ubisoft for 3 trophies, it said in the article they only wanted a 2D Rayman, but they gave Nintendo a 3D Rayman.

Rayman is a classic with Sonic and Mario, of course theirs a huge Rayman fanbase for SSB4

Sakurai mentioned that Nintendo executives were upset about him opening up to third party in Brawl yet their comments were favorable towards Sonic and Sonic returned. I think the people in Nintendo were clearly upset with Snake being that he is more of a Playstation character. I do not see him getting back in.

Rayman will be the last third party if any third parties are selected as DLC.

What makes you think about the last sentence? But as long as Rayman is playable, that's all I want, doesn't matter if he sucks and all of his moves stink, atleast hes a character.

I really have to say, Watch_Dogs seemed really fitting for a PS character, he looks like someone off of GTA, not to mention, think of a game like that on a Wii U, doesn't really fit right with Nintendo

I'm pretty sure I saw a Wii U version of the game when I picked up Smash.

They praised Snake as well.

I won't have any character bashing here. And honestly, I see Snake coming back before a lot of characters.

You mean the worse version that came out a year later for seemingly no reason

You do know that porting a game isn't as simple as slapping it on a Wii U disk and calling it a day, right?

Different hardware have very different structures, they basically have to rebuild the game from the ground up, with only the assets they already made available. It's like building two of the same house, one being there won't make the second one pop up by magic.

As for it being "worse," it's a similar issue, the consoles are structured differently. They have to learn how to use the hardware, this is the same reason launch titles are generally worse when compared to games later in a console's lifespan. The PS3 in particular was notorious for being very difficult to work with, as the architecture wasn't very developer friendly. Of course now that the console is old and they've already made tons of games for it, they don't have much trouble with it anymore. If the Wii U version of the game is glitchier, then it's just a problem with the game being run on different hardware, and no fault of the development team.

Well that wasn't very Rayman related, other than it being about Ubisoft. Time to get back on topic~

I'm still thinking of ways to improve the OP, as always, suggestions are welcome!

No if you listen to Sakurai's comments, he had issues with some heads of Nintendo that disagreed with Snake being in it. Sakurai liked Snake.

...

Iwata
Every time we add to the series, we increase the number of characters, and Smash Bros. Brawl has pushed this to the limit. However, I think it’s best if our players let the Smash Bros. Dojo website attest to that fact.

Sakurai
Definitely. (laughs)

Iwata
I would, however, like to touch upon two of the new characters, Snake and Sonic. Clearly these two are the very first guests to the world of Nintendo.

Sakurai
Correct. I know I’m the one who’s being interviewed, but I’d like to ask you how Nintendo felt about having outsiders in the game.

Iwata
You mean, whether or not it was okay?

Sakurai
Right.

Iwata
Everyone understood for the most part since that’s the nature of Smash Bros. However, there were debates about where to draw the line. For the most part though, it was readily solved since we were comfortable that you were in charge for the selection. I myself thought it was best to make the game as inclusive and entertaining as possible since festive opportunities like Smash Bros. come along only once in a great while.

Sakurai
I’m glad everyone felt they could trust me. For my part, I have no regrets about incorporating Snake and Sonic into the game and I think their inclusion was well worthwhile.

Iwata
Now that you’ve put them in the game, can you tell me what they’re like?

Sakurai
Hmm, what should I say? I think they’re solid characters with a lot of potential.

Iwata
Because they’re non-Nintendo characters?

Sakurai
Right. They’ve certainly have a distinct feel to them. It’s not that I was consciously trying to design Nintendo and non-Nintendo characters, but ultimately, I feel they’re molded differently than the other characters as far as the laws of Smash Bros. are concerned.

Iwata
I was impressed with the end results. They blend in as if they’ve always been there yet also possess a fresh, new aura.

Actually, they stopped developed on the wii u version altogether to make the other versions, then ported it over. Taking over a year to release on wii u

Then there's the already finished rayman legends which was delayed for like 7 months so it could be put on other consoles

The point I'm trying to make here is that ubisoft and nintendo are not really on good terms anymore, they've basically dropped all support for the wii u

Ubisoft was the first third party to even bother with the Wii U, while everyone else stayed away from it at first.

And the fact that Legends took seven months to port only proves my point about games being difficult to make multi platform.

Nintendo and Ubisoft are businesses, they're on the same terms as they've always been. Ubisoft was worried about whether Watch Dogs would sell on the Wii U, and they wanted Legends to sell more, they need to make money. The games they made already sold poorly on the Wii U beforehand, it was nothing more than a business decision in each case.

Also I never said they weren't hard to port, I'm saying they should've worked on the wii u version alongside the other versions. Also they delayed rayman for 7 months despite the game being finished but released watch dogs without the wii u version rather than delaying it, that's totally fair

I just noticed the talk about Rayman's height, and I can tell you that he is approximately 150cm. Ancel mentioned this in that one Twitch stream where him and his team did a Q&A while playing Legends.

I did up a height chart around that time, to compare Rayman to the canon sizes of some other game characters:

If you try selling peanuts at a basketball game and no one is buying them, would you keep trying to sell them there?

If you tried selling them at a baseball game and actually made a profit, would you leave the basketball game or stay?

I'm not surprised about Pac and Mega Man, as the former was "Mario-sized" in games like Pac-Man World and this Mega Man's based off the NES version. I gotta admit I thought modern Sonic would be just a *bit* taller than Mario since he seems to stretch out every few years, and he's come a long way in height from his original self.

Rayman on the other hand is a small guy, but he seems to look a tad older in each main game and his height grows too. I can see Rayman's 1-3 incarnates matching Mario, but the Origins and Legends games show him as a bit lankier than before when he stands upright. Maybe they just slimmed his torso up or perhaps there's more distance between his feet and his body--I just see him more at Luigi's height now because of those 2 games.

EDIT: Well, nvm then, Ancel gave us an official confirmation.

Also in relation to Ubisoft and Nintendo, as James said, they are businesses. Ubisoft laying off their support for Wii U a bit does not mean they have guns against their throats all of a sudden, and just look at Snake. Heck, I'm pretty sure Capcom has not released a single Wii U title outside of Ducktales Remastered. I certainly cannot think of any retail titles from Capcom on Wii U. If company support for Wii U is a factor for a third party, Mega Man has no right being in this game.

By contrast, Rayman Legends sold better on Wii U than on any other system it was released on by a large margin, and before the jump to multiplatform that caused the massive delay, it was a highly anticipated title by Wii U owners, and continued to be afterwards.

Mega man wasn't chosen because of capcom though, he was chosen because of fan demand and being an iconic character back on the NES

Rayman has fan demand (granted, not nearly as much) and is an iconic character all the way from the N64 to the Wii U.

At least he hasn't died off like the Blue Kamikaze Bomber.

Rayman has been on almost all of Nintendo system consoles, Ubisoft was supporting Nintendo like the poster said.

If it were up to Capcom, we'd to have to choose between Ryu or Phoenix Wright, considering how little they have done with Mega Man over the past decade. Fan demand was the main reason why Mega Man got in. As for Pac-Man, it was because Namco-Bandai helped develop the game, and considering that Pac-Man is a representation of Namco's 1980s arcade titles as opposed to anything in the past two decades, there is a typical response to how things work in character selection and utilization.

Rayman would get in moreso because of fan demand, and unlike Snake, would be a more "friendly" suggestion for a third-party character due to the fact that he comes off as a less "controversial" choice. While I did like Snake in Brawl, if Sakurai is no longer going to be involved in the development of the franchise, starting with the DLC, we may have to consider writing off the super soldier.

I remember someone saying a while back that Rayman may have faced a "Snake in Melee" scenario, and I'm not convinced that's the case.

When Iwata announced SSB4 in E3 2012, we had learned that development just started and there would be 2 versions. We also saw a playable demo of Rayman Legends' s Grannies World Tour, a year before an official Smash 4 trailer was released at the following E3. It's clear that Ubisoft knew of the Wii U before we did as they had 2 games in development for it, both set to be launch titles while SSB4 was in very early stages and released about a year before the latest Smash. That may not sound like much, but remember that this game managed to have Sonic Lost World content, Tropical Freeze music, a Mario Kart 8 stage which came out 6 months before Smash and a Yoshi's Wooly World stage. That game isn't even out.

Bottom line, for whatever reason(s) Rayman isn't in, I doubt too late in development is one. E3 2012 was the Wii U's unveiling, and they already had a playable Rayman demo to show, while SSB4 was transitioning from an idea to a product.

That was me, actually.

You're also forgetting the part where Sakurai decided the roster (with the exception of last minute clones) at the start of development. While we don't know what this means for any DLC, it's clear that he wasn't going to stop everything for a character.

We also don't know when Ubisoft even asked for Rayman, if they did. So being too late is very much a possibility.

Stages and music are different matter entirely.

Exactly, which is why that's a point in Rayman's favour - supporting the Wii U has absolutely nothing to do with third parties getting into Smash, and even if it was, Rayman is one of the bigger candidates outside of Sonic and Pac-Man.

A four year hiatus between his last appearance in a Rabbids game and Origins? That's hardly "dying."

Unless you mean between Rayman 3 and Origins, which isn't accurate, but it was eight years between "main" games.
The rabbids games barely count as rayman games

I took to Photo Studio today and had some fun with Rayman's trophy:

Third-Party Selfie!

What Rayman would probably look like next to Rosalina under canon heights...also, he seems to have found a Luma!

Rayman found a way for Mario to fly about like he does with his hair!

Here's the default trophy sizes of Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, and Rayman. Gives us an accurate idea of how Rayman would be scaled compared to them in Smash if he were a fighter:

Hi there!
I want to say that I'm a Rayman fan as with everyone else here. I admit, my #1 video game hero is Mario, but Rayman has a special place in my heart. I loved playing Rayman since the first game, and since Rayman made his grand return in Origins and Legends, one of my biggest wishes for this Smash Bros is for Rayman to be playable. I've even opened up my own fan group on DeviantArt just a year ago to gather support in raising demand for Rayman to be playable, similar to this board. My dream came true...... sort of.

Recently, a friend of mine on DeviantArt, who is also a member of this thread, introduced me to this. So I've just signed up today. If anyone can introduce me to the leader of this thread, I would appreciate it. I have hope that Rayman will be playable as DLC in the future, especially since he's the only non-playable third party to have three trophies. So, I'm looking forward to hanging out around here often. :)

Welcome to SmashBoards! It's always great to see another fan taking action!

I'm not much of a leader, but I own the thread. What's up?

Pleased to meet you! I was looking through this thread, an I have to say that it caught my attention. I'm glad that are other people out there who care about Rayman as much as I do. Like I said, I run two groups on DeviantArt, one a basic Smash Bros group, SSB-United, and the other being the Rayman centered group that I mentioned, which is Rayman-4-Smash. One of your members, SegaNintendoUbisoft, is a member of my Rayman group (Real nice guy, too). Once I reach the 10 post criteria, I'll give the links for you to look at if you're interested.

Anyway, I won't be posting very much since I have an exam in less than two days from now. But once things are taken care of, I'll be hanging out around here more often during winter break, and I'll be willing to do some collaborations with you guys if you're up for it. I'll let you know if anything else comes up.

Thanks!

I joined the group already actually, my username on dA is the same one I use here. I don't do much on dA anymore, though.
