Hey guys, I recorded some matches with my DVD recorder last weekend and I was looking for some Falcon tips. I'm hoping that since this is probably the most popular char. specific board, I can get a lot of good feedback.

Here are my videos:

NEWER VIDEO!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiOGDGC1BGo

This is a video of me playing Kels in a tournament last weekend. He was in my pool and only dropped one game. (Not to me though.) With a phenomenal player like Kels, what should I do to try and do a lot better? His waveshines felt like infinites the whole time.

NEW VIDEO!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHq4_ji-0Pg&feature=channel_page

This is a video of me at LoLiS (huge Mighican tourney held last weekend) during pool play. I had never played a good Ganondorf before. I felt like I was a better player, but still lost.

My question is, what did I do wrong? Did I just make bad tech/recovery choices? Bad spacing? Throw choices?

help against not getting 2 stocked by popo

A few things I hope to hear about the most are: Attack choice, spacing, tech-chasing (preferably against heavy characters who always tumble from dthrows), throw choices, and basic mindgame strats.

I don't really model my Falcon after anyone, so right now I'm in between being sorta campy, or sorta ballsy and agressive.

Any and all help is appreciated! (Sorry for the post length.)

I Think you just have habits that you get from playing ppl that dont give you enough of a challenge. PLaye better ppl to increase your skill in things like accuracy, spacing and overall doing things a bit faster. Also there were some times where you should grab more than stomp and knee. A Grab and a good read is usaually more effective than the straight forward approach.

don't tech chase with nair dude that knocks them in the air and lets them attack, it breaks your comb0

tech chase with stomp grabs or knee, depending on %s

knee falco more, if he's over like 50% and you get a chance to knee him do it, don't do a nair after a stomp at 95%
if you hit him with a knee when he doesn't have his second jump he's basically dead lol

i didn't watch the IC matches 'cause i have 0 IC experience.. don't get grabbed

thanks a lot guys. i've been working on what to do after throws a lot lately. especially against fastfallers. it seems like every time i dthrow at low %, they tumble away and my tech chase is always late and they shield, spot dodge, etc. i love uthrow to uair (with bad DI) and uthrow to nair. anything else? maybe...raptor boost? haha.

cping you to Mute at a MDZ tourney
You don't seem to cover enough options. You probably play with a lot of the same people which puts you in bad punishing habits that not everyone may follow. Good overall, you nair lots which is smart

for fastfallers, try techchasing with grab instead of aerial once in a while. Also, dair-grab more, you tend to make silly choices after dair, which is a setup for really anything. Knee falco more.

Edit:

Didn't we argue on youtube once?

lol i think we argued about how good gimpyfish was. something along those lines.

this weekend i am having another "smashfest" and i'll definitely have more footage. thanks for all of the replies guys.

you have all nailed it right on the head when i said that i play the same people a lot. i live in the midwest (a very bad spot in the MW) and it's tough to find good players who aren't 2 hours away.

back when melee was the only thing we had, i played all kinds of different people. went to a few smashfests in AA and played some of the MW best players.

more recently i play my friend who started advanced smash 2 months ago (Daisaku) and Ott whos been playing for 2 years, but goes to EMU and doesn't visit often enough.

it's hard to come up with ways to tech chase on your own, watch vids and see what pros do to get ideas, and then throw in some of your own stuff once you're familiar with your options

what i would work on most if i were you at this point is just overall control of your character, speed really isn't that important compared to being able to make CF do what you want, and often times you only have a few seconds to react and decide what you WANT to do -- but you should work towards making CF do what you want him to do after you decide

after that work on your speed, when you're just using moves to zone and space and spam make sure they come out FAST, and make sure you're landing and running wherever you want to go next, just keep CF moving as much as you can

my final piece of advice is that CF is a really scary character to play against, and you can use that to your advantage. people never want to get hit by him so it's easy to swing momentum in your favor and put them on defense. so be aware of that and try doing nothing sometimes when you're the aggressor, let them use some defensive move like rolling or dodging, and then try to punish after that.

Adrian?

Dude. Come to Ann Arbor more. Our Melee scene is up and running again thanks to the arrival of 5-6 UM freshmen who all love playing, including yours truly.

Smashfests happen a lot. I'd love to get in some Falcon dittos sometime.

Scar- Thanks a lot for the help. It definitely means a lot to me that people actually care on smashboards. I feel like I've improved a lot thanks to people always being helpful. I don't feel like so much of a scrub. Haha.

Juggleguy - You name the time and place man. My buddy and I (Daisaku from the videos) definitely need a bit more exposure. (Him mostly) I haven't been big on the scene since I was in high school and I definitely want to get him involved. Weekends that we don't have a home game (which is like every weekend) are all fair game. We had a huge party at my apartment last weekend and this guy from UofM was talking some smack about his Samus and we had to turn on the cube. Of course he got 3 stocked. Haha. But what a douche. He was in MY room telling me he could **** me. :p

Oh man, I've been trying to see where the A2 scene is, but the MBAA doesn't have a website or anything (at least I don't think). Flip, I would totally meet for anything you wanted to go to in A2. It's not even 20 minutes away from where I am living.

Are you coming to the Ann Arbor biweeklies starting on the 19th? The big guns are all supposed to be attending. Dope, Shaeden, Bigy, Trail, hell even Kels and Tink. It'll be the most loaded Melee tourney in Michigan since Brawl came out.

man, all of that sounds amazing. i would seriously LOVE to make my way up there this saturday. i get paid thursday so hopefully it would be within my budget to borrow someone's car and be there. i need to be certain that Ott's ICs is better than Trail's. :p

but what's the protocol? we smash in a dorm room on UM campus and then drive back to where we came from? entry fees? anything i should know? addresses? housing?

for smashfests or tournaments?
smashfests have no entry fees for us lol. you could possibly get housing from an aa smasher if you ask in the big mi discussion, or you can drive there, smash for the night, then go back.
the other questions you should ask in the big mi . were kind of off topic lol

Your falcon looks pretty decent. I'd say it has a lot of potential, I didn't read everyone else's post because I don't have time right now, but just a few quick things: Grab a lot more, you'll be surprised what wonders you can do if you dash-dance A LOT around slow characters like Gannon and grab them when they're not expecting it. Just focus on being faster. The faster you are the easier it'll be to punish. ESPECIALLY slow characters. You don't need to know so much combos out of the grabs as much as you need to focus on getting them with some attack after a grab that puts them off the stage. Also, in the beginning you played into his hands pretty easily. As far as attacking when he's in a neutral state so its very easy for him to shield grab. Good job though and keep it up!

for the one vs kels

you did alot of unnecessary random moves that didnt hit anything
you know what i mean?
like the stuff you usually do in between stocks, you did them while you were playing

it might have been only maybe 3 times but it hurts

once you get hit by fox it turns into 3, 4, 5 hits

at low percents try to nair>grab tech chase
or dash dance and run away>grab

once you get a grab do everything you can to keep it going, you gotta move really fast and think about their options so you can try to eliminate some of their options

if you can get 1 out of every 2 grabs into a tech chase stomp or knee, youll do alot better

when you down throw try to always cover their tech in place/no tech option with a knee
if you notice they never do that go for a grab tech chase

also when your on the receiving end of shield pressure roll quickly or wd out or jump out
your hardly ever gonna get that out of shield stomp

Throwing in my opinion:

Don't jump into the **** dude. Your first stock was taken away by one single reason. Shield grabs.
Spacing is mad important. You might want to land your nairs either behind or infront and out of range of your opponent. This accounts for almost every move. Dairs are also very good in shorthops when you space it good, this is a very good setup for just about everything.

Next stop, jabs!
Jab reset or just a jab on a shield after your L-canceled knee got shielded. This way you can jab to avoid a counter. If he still blocks: grab or gentlemen, or even upsmash. This puts pressure on his shield. Now he will probably want to roll to avoid ****. This will be away or behind you. When you gentlemen (and if you are fast enough) the moment you see him rolling to a side, you shorthop Dair if he rolls behind you (for example) or he positions himself in front of you for a knee, which is always nice.

Also, I never see people kick when they grab anymore. Is this because everyone wants fluent material for an awesome video? *** that. Keep an eye on the % to see how many kicks you can get out of a grab, I love it.

Anyway, its late for me now, I'll check up on this thread again later.

EDIT* Ohyeah, keep moving! Melee is like sex. If you play safe, you'll have a good time. If you jump into the ****, well, I think this one speaks for itself.
