I heard this somewhere.
I don't wan't the Ps2 to die out, its a brilliant console, so I'm sure it won't.
Your thoughts?

People are starting to move on. This happens with every generation, not just for the PS2. It had a long life, but with newer, better consoles out, it was destined to die out eventually.

It needs to die now. The only reason why Sony wants it to still live is in case the PS3 flops in some quarters so they rely on PS2 for some profit. But then this makes some video game devs lazy and just port it to the Wii, which makes alot of Wii owners angry.

8 years is a long time for a home video game console to be on the market, and it's had a **** good run. While nothing new might be coming out, the time is right to milk the absolutely brilliant software library that the PS2 has itself. Cheap used games ahoy!

PS2 WILL NEVER DIE!!

but seriously, after 8+ so years, PS2 was indeed the best selling console out of the last generation consoles, but look on the bright side, at least PS3 is going to begin it's run.

you could just buy a ps3 and play them and get blu ray and better graphics
Even if they kept backwards compatibility, I still can't afford a $500(or whatever price it is) game system, and the only game that looks any good is MGS4.

I don't the PS2 is dying out, after all, it was the best selling system for even a decade, and it's considered pound-for-pound the best game system ever, with everything that makes a game system great, and less of what takes away from one.

But the age of PS2 is passing. It's not going to be a frontrunner forever. Eventually the day will come when the PS2 is just a nostalgia system, like the Super Nintendo or the Sega Genesis.

Well, you said it yourself, the day will come when it'll simply be fondly remembered by most of the population. It is very much dying out, but that's not a bad thing.

In their latest issue, Game Informer ran an article about the Playstation 2 Top 25, and looking at that list there is a hell of alot of good content that came out for the PS2, and now with the PS2's death those games (and the system itself) are going to be dirt cheap to obtain.

It's the same situation across all last-gen platforms. Now is the right time to expand your libraries with those games, because there will come a day when they'll start becoming increasingly rare (PS1 games are showing up less and less in the used merchandise stores I frequent).

Yeah, some Ps1 games were awesome, like the Crash series, luckily they carried on the games' series as I said before.

But Ps2 games are still being played now and will still be played for a while longer.

Even if its not lasting long.

I don't see why it was kept alive for so long, it made it seem like you could keep a PS2 instead of getting a PS3.

Because you CAN keep a ps2 instead of getting a ps3.

The ps2 appeals to the casual market. For AU$150 or so you can pick one up and a game or two, and a memory card and you're ready to go. People are using it to play stuff like Buzz, my sister even bought Guitar Hero 2 and sadly the singstar games. Of course the people who actually consider themselves gamers have moved on, only returning to play the godly Shadow of the Collosus (/drool), but if you're not interested in all that then you're not going to pay $599 too willingly. Games on the ps2 are cheaper aswell, so your 8 year old nephew could get that movie spin off he wanted.

It's not hard to see why the console has stayed alive so long when you consider casual gamers.

All the casuals are getting Wii. Not a Playstation. Just because your sister bought one doesn't speak for all of them. I can't even think of any games on that system that appeal to casual gamers other than the ones you mentioned.

PS2 isn't much of a casual system, the games are heavily focused on normal gamers so casual gamers have to go out of there way to find casual games for the PS2 because of the lack of advertisement, these days all you ever see on tv is Wii and Wii games so casuals are more inclined to by that especially since there's motion sensing which attracts casuals more than button pressing.

Here are a few, panda, some I've already mentioned. Every singstar game. Every guitar hero game. DDR games. All the Buzz variants. Hundreds of cheaply made fairy tale games (you see them selling for about $20 in Big W). Movie spin off games. The crash bandicoot and spyro the dragon games. Sports games. Noone who considers themselves a gamer would buy these, yet they sell. But how if the ps2 doesn't appeal to casual gamers? AN ENIGMA! lolwut indeed.

What I said before, but reworded: Think like a parent here, or a non gamer for a moment. You want a console but don't want to spend a lot of money. Maybe it won't get used too much. Maybe you only want one or two games (singstar is a prime example). Maybe you just want to keep the kids busy You're not looking for wii sports or wii fit so you don't get a wii . Maybe every wii in the city is sold out so you get the next best thing for your budget. The ps2 is cheap , easy and everywhere.

This is why the ps2 is still moving thousands of units.

Pas has it right. You can get a PS2, games, memory cards and extra controllers all for about 200 bucks, whereas a wii with One Wiimote and wii Sports is $400. What are you going to get if you dont have much cash spare?

The PS2 is also appealing to that "little brother" market. Parents will snag a used PS2 and a bunch of games for cheap, and it'll keep 'em occupied for months. It'll probably have a little more life in it as a commercial system just because of that reason.

PS2 is like dead.
Let's grab a shovel and dump this thing to the ground, this systems been out for far too long and the company should relized that. I guess the main reason why this was still alive was because of the price of the PS3. =/

As a bit of added news, from what I hear, they're discontinuing the making of PS2's and PS2 games after this year.

PS2 definitely wasn't dying out (it wasn't a top system anymore, but still going strong, basically because it is still, all things considered, pound for pound, one of the best games systems out there), but I can see why they're doing it. Sony had to move on sometimes, and, given that many PS3 games were recently being released on the PS2 as well, and that most people are sticking to having dual systems of PS2 and XBox360, they have to move the focus to their next gen system.

Face it, no matter how good the PS2 is, Sony had to move on sometime.

Still, it's been a good run.

This proves otherwise...

That's cool I guess, if they stop making PS2s I might pick up another one since PS3's BC is confusing to me with all the different PS3s out there.

Cruisin in my Jeep.. I wish.
i sadly have to say that the ps2 is finally dying. but since its been out of over like 8 and a half years, id say its the best selling system ever just cause of all the success its had. usually systems die out in like 5 years but the ps2 is still here today, 8 and a half years later.
