I know I'm not the only one, and I'm sure this has already been a thread but I'm pretty new here so cut me some slack.

I'm playing a string of people in 1v1 For Glory and, lately, it's just a bunch of projectile spammers (mainly Link, Toon Link, Robin) who shoot arrows until they have the confidence to hammer their C-stick. I haven't quite found a main yet, but I'm finding a home in Ganondorf.

Honestly, I would rather get my ass beat by someone who can string combos together than someone who pulls off a lucky smash attack and then jumps the boat after a game or two. Any tips? I've been trying to rush players like this, but I find myself taking too much damage sometimes. Ganondorf only takes a few combos before he has KO potential, but it's frustrating because of how slow he is. I consider myself to be a pretty decent Ganondorf player, but are there any well known Ganondorf mains who can help me out?

Ganon is always going to struggle against projectile users with his slowness and lack of projectile countering moves/properties. Considered Ike maybe as an alternative? He's in a similar power range like GD but he has a bit more mobility to him.

Well I only start to spam if someone starts running away or cheaply plays by playing exclusively defensively. One Ganondorf I played only played defensively, so I punished him by spamming arrows as Toon Link.

Ganondorf is my second most used character, while I might not be a "pro" by any means I have found a couple solutions to combat against projectile spammers. It you have good timing you simply walk forward and perfect shield all there projectiles, most of the time they set up a rhythm with there projectiles so after a while it's real easy to get in close and surprise them. Another solution is to stand still and wait for them, this doesn't always work however.

I know what you mean, I play a lot of Charizard , and most of the other pokemon. If I'm playing the same person over and over I'll just switch to greninja instead. Perhaps just switch to an alt dude, projectile spammers are a real problem for heavies.

I'd say pick up Little Mac or DK as secondaries. Little Mac can quickly get in to overwhelm many projectile users and DK has longer range and faster attacks. With big, slow characters, it largely boils down to patience which will be particularly difficult against characters with a lot of different projectiles. At least Ganondorf isn't as hilariously hopeless against projectiles as he was in Brawl.

If you can play people locally instead, rock the customs.

Wizard's Dropkick (alternate Down-B) is a game changer for the projectile scenario. I went from not even being able to KO a friend that plays Samus when I used Ganon to actually having close to even matches. The distance most projectile characters are inclined to shoot at you thinking they are 'safe' is the perfect distance Ganon needs to react with Dropkick and hit them right in the face.

Playing local also eliminates a lot of lag problems you may not even be aware of on For Glory. I personally found some fights to be grossly one sided online because precise reaction time was needed, yet lag made that almost impossible. The same match up locally, while still hard, didn't feel so grossly one sided. Mac is so much easier to fight locally than online with slower big hitters like Ganon and Charizard.

I actually do play DK as a secondary. I play a lot of faster characters that can easily counter said projectile spammers, but I'm trying to build up a pretty threatening Ganondorf.

play for a hundred or so games, get used to your main, then the link spammers will be no problem at all. I main cpt falcon, who has no ranged attacks at all and it's still pretty easy to deal with link/toon link. jump above his bow/boomerange. Bait out up-smashes, land beside him, and crush face.

I hate them because my reaction time isn't fast enough for me to deal with them yet. They should be easy to deal with, really, but I just can't seem to consistently avoid and punish.

As a ROBin main myself, I found myself literally laughing out loud at this post.
Every character has their poor matchups, and Ganondorf is no exception. All I can say is, shield against the projectiles, find openings in their attack pattern, and approach them through said openings. It might not be easy as Ganondorf, but it can be done if you just analyze their attack pattern and change up your playstyle accordingly, and that goes for any unfavorable matchup as any character.
Or you could just try turtling on the other side of the stage and shield all of their projectiles. Eventually, they'll be forced to approach you and come into Ganon's comfort zone.

Falcon is not really a fair comparison since he has the speed to close the distance between each projectile.

yeah you may be right about that. I'm not sure how i'd handle projectiles or zoners while using a heavy hitter. I'd say just stay close and predict the rolls.

It sucks, I know, but just try to take it slow; don't overextend yourself, and learn to be okay with only getting hits in every now and then.
I've fought quite a few people who, after losing, resort to picking Samus/Lucario and running away, spamming projectiles the whole time.
It's annoying and, if you're really good at working past patterns, only prolongs the inevitable.
Pace yourself, look for the openings, and capitalize.
It may be a dash attack here and there or ftilt to punish a roll, but it all adds up, and eventually, you'll get a strong enough hit to start the push offstage, and they'll most likely fall prey to airdodge bait.

I feel like I'm robbed of a game even when I win vs these people; I can't just drop out of the match because Nintendo will ban me for 10 minutes, and I don't want to kill myself and entertain their belief that their strategy works.
It's a hard pill to swallow for heavy mains, but there's always the chance it'll get better someday.

I read through the entire thread and no one mentioned my suggestion, perhaps it is because it is common-sense? Or maybe it is because we are thinking about this from the perspective of someone trying to approach a projectile spammer. Regardless, as someone who enjoys zoning players out with projectiles, the one piece of advice that I can offer: do not let them spam their projectiles. There are characters notorious for their projectiles, identify the characters you struggle with and do not let them create space. I used to play Ganondorf in every other Smash (albeit, I only used him in free-for-all in Brawl) and I did not have many problems with projectiles as if I was up against a character with nasty projectiles, I would ensure that they had no time to use them. You still get barraged with them, but a power shield or two will solve that problem. Pressure them so that they do not feel comfortable throwing out a projectile. After that, you can play in the neutral. If you let your guard down and they are able to set-up a wall of projectiles, that is on you. Basically, you have to play more defensively once they start, but if you are more aggressive and close the space, they have no choice but to cease the spamming.
