Personally! I was/am hoping that Smash 4 would become the SFIV of its series. Simplistic, but competitive with a clear progression as a player. (Another problem I had with Brawl, I could never tell if I or anyone improved/was good very readily)
This is where I get to chime in an as SF fan and say SF4, while still good in its right, took all the speed and pace out of ST and replaced what was a game that rewarded fundamentals and good play with a game that rewards fancy combos and links and habits that are, on paper and in execution, not as good. Don't mean to pick apart your comparison but I adapted to SF4 so I know exactly what it's like which is probably why I'm not bitter about Brawl or anything. I just accept that it's not the same game and live with it, really. I also attest that my patience towards a game being defense oriented is because of SF. Zoning and the like, given that I play Guile.

Also Saito I don't think crouching out of dash was dumb either but I was speaking in a general scope. Scuse me, sir.

Hopefully Yoshi and Peach still have Float Dash and Dr so we can have some Out of Dash options, since everyone is so crazy about that lol.

I think more movement options out of dash is really the one thing most everybody is looking for. Wavedashing and L-cancelling aren't huge concerns, surprisingly enough.

Really if they add movements out of dash that aren't jump and attack it'll be fine. DDing would be cool too but I'd just like the options. It's not something I'm setting as a requirement though, because Smash 64 is already my favorite Smash and look at how bare it is lol. It probably explains a lot about how I feel about this game actually.

I cant wait to get this game so I can make it look like they made a PM for Smash 4 since thats what I do with Brawl apparently. Ill find a way to make this game fast paced and enjoyable for you guys, i promise.

Yeah, I said it before, they 'stripped' the 'problematic' features. They heard planking was a problem, so they decided to kill edge-hogging, and in turn, the ledge doesn't seem to be a disadvantageous or advantageous place anymore. (At least, that's how I'm interrupting this)

Ledge looks neutral but you can't see the % there so you can't tell how much ledge invul each player has. Ledge invul is still present so I'm going to say that the ledge game is still existent but there are a few more factors to it.

That's not a bad thing though. In the environment of PM, yes, that'd be a bad thing, but Smash 4's environment allows for you to go out there, make those big off-stage plays, and play ledgeguarding and aerial play similar to Smash 64 with lower risk. There are only mixups and mindgames that can be added by taking the ledge and hoping your opponent will try and take it from you on purpose.

I wouldn't say that I don't like the look of it, since it looks like Smash 4, not Melee/PM. It's a totally different beast, with its own mechanics, mindgames, setups, and edgeguarding. Approach it like that, and it'll have a totally new appeal.

There's a chance this could not be completely terrible, but two things would need to happen.

1. When you grab the ledge, you're forced to stay there for a small amount of time before you can perform an action.
2. When you take the ledge from someone, they are kicked off and unable to do moves for a given amount of time. This would allow for an aerial punish.

True true.

In accordance to the mindgames on ledge, the invitational players confirmed there was some lag for stealing the ledge (I believe it was to the player who lost the ledge), something to consider.

All of this only makes me think Smash 4 Doubles play will be that much better lol. Opponent on the ledge and coming back? Force them off for your teammate to take care of. You'll be stuck waiting at the ledge before you can act again, but your teammate has your back for that opponent who's in the same situation dangling in the air.

In Melee/PM, you get the dynamic of holding the ledge to force the opponent off for an early kill. In 1v1 situations in Smash 4, that might not be ideal, and could just be silly. But, in a multiplayer scenario (teams, free-for-all), it seems perfect. The game is catered towards the 4-player crowd, after all. So when I see these things that might not be ideal for Singles, I look at it from the Doubles perspective, and things seem to have a place in the game.

Every time I see something I dislike in Smash 4, I just think 2v2 and it instantly becomes something cool.

I just finished a match. Little mac has a TON of knock back. No chain grabbing Fox with Marth. Fast falling seems to cancel moves if you short hop. I only tested this with samus.

Samus's missiles takes a long time to launch, and they took out her sex kick with a double kick to the front and back

That looks awful. Guess I'll have to adapt to it regardless.

I just wish you could hog the ledge at least a bit and not be kicked off instantly after grabbing it.

Red Ryu confirmed this actually happens IIRC from the post I read from him.

You're telling me that L-Canceling won't be needed cause you could just throw your Nair, hit someone, then cancel into fastfall for minimal landing lag? There is a hope.

That would be a neat mechanic. Reminds me of a weird daydream where I thought of something like that. It's like L-cancelling but it only benefits you if you hit someone, if that's how it is/.

yes, it seems like there was a auto l cancel when I tried to short hop and fast fall, but I couldn't missile cancel.

I tested this out multiple times with samus and villager

I'm glad the anti-hype is over and there's actual constructive discussion going on
I'm neutral about the new ledge mechanics, it could honestly prove interesting in the future.

The way I see it, this new ledge-grabbing mechanic opens up a whole new dynamic for team play. Even if you're unable to act after snagging/being snagged for a brief period of time, it opens up real options. Consider these scenarios.

Ledgeguarding: I can steal the ledge from the opponent once they snag it, and we'll both be unable to act for a brief amount of time. But my teammate can take advantage of my opponent being 'frozen' in the air like that. At the same time, I have to weigh the risk that the other opponent can try and do that to me. If it's safer, I can opt to wait on the stage itself.

Recovering: I can steal the ledge from my opponent, but what if they want me to? I could force the person holding the ledge off the stage, and we'd both be frozen for a bit, but the other opponent could then force me off right into the space where the guy I just forced off is waiting, and I just got KO'd for free.

I'm taking this all in with as open a mind as possible. It all seems so perfect for 2v2.

I was never a fan of edgehogging even as effective as it was.

Mario should of fell off and used a Bair.

Just means edge guarding is more prominent now since edge hogging isn't a thing.
just testing out the edge hogging feature. Wasn't a actual match

I can consider myself a very good edge hoger. Now it seems the edge is more safe

I still wouldn't mind 2v2 as a standard play. I tell everyone that it makes brawl really fun to watch and nobody believes me ;;

it'd actually sound p. cool as an official nintendo tournament setup, too. they can promote good values by using it to promote teamwork and playing with friends

See guys Sm4sh isn't Brawl 2.0/Worse Brawl
It truly is a new game
It felt more like brawl than melee, but once I started to Shuffle (without l cancel) it seemed more possible to follow up with combos.

btw Bowser is no joke in this game. I just had a 4 player bowser battle, and it was utter chaos!

You know I'm glad this game just looks more fun to play than Brawl at the very least. Combos and such, even if they look hard(although I guess I'm using Luigi so it'll be cake like it always is with him.)

You're a hero for testing that.
I mostly tested out the mechanics on the 3ds version. I'll try out more Wii U

Does the setup have GameCube controllers?
Pro controllers. It was difficult the first few matches to get use to it, but I adapted after a while. The jump button is very close to the a and b and the control stick is a different size and feel which threw me off.

I'll probably go Saturday if I can and will use these cool tips about short hop fast fall l-cancel and using the ledge mechanics to my advantage and see how it goes.

Also, will try to go agro. Any tips on strong offensive characters like Little Mac will be cool to see.
