good morning, thread

a thought that keeps cropping up in my mind: assuming a future where an AI can feasibly do just about everything a human can do in a fighting game, but with far greater reaction times and execution, what would a fighting game specifically designed for AIs look like? something intentionally built with the understanding that anything that could be punishable always will be, and will always be responded with the most optimal execution needed

A fighting game designed to be played by AI but viewed by humans? Or a fighting game designed to be enjoyed solely by AI?

Because I don't think the latter really works. Games that are turn-based are either solvable entirely, or contain some random element that prevents "solving" but can still be optimized around, or contain some hidden information element that puts mindgames into play. Real-time games with complete information, i.e. fighting games, are effectively turn-based games with complete information, i.e. solvable.

So if you want to make a fighting game for AIs, you would need to either reintroduce human limits (i.e. design it around an AI with a five-frame reaction time, a ten-frame one, or whatever) or introduce hidden information by some other fashion (e.g. a stealth mechanic, or maybe you blur spacing so they can only see their opponent on every third frame, or something) or randomness such that the same sequence of moves does not always result.

I guess reaction time is sort of like a hidden information mechanic, in fact. Your opponent's last handful of frames (depending on your reaction time in the moment) are effectively hidden from you.

A good chunk of the enjoyability of fighting games also comes from differences in the playstyles of humans; and differences in playstyle amount to optimizing some aspects but not others, while presumably an AI would have a much easier time optimizing. So you'd need some way to introduce that as well.

Making a fighting game designed to be played by AI but watched by people? That's another story.

no, that'd be the result of a perfect AI playing a traditional fighting game. life has the right idea of what I'm thinking of here, effectively turn it into a fast-paced (but still easy to ingest spectator-wise) strategy fighter and let people watch on

I remember doing this for a little while as a kid, think it might be of interest to you:

Not quite what you meant by "AI" nor is it really a fighting game in the sense gamers use, but it's basically what you described: bots fight each other for human entertainment.

True suffering isnforcing your way through a plain can of tuna because work ran out of Mayo packets, with the full knowledge that you have another can to push through later that same day...

just cook some mac and cheese or something and eat it with that

Edit - I feel like there's gonna be some kind of calorie explanation that's about to happen.

I'm at work, so I'm stuck with what I have here. They ran out of Mayo packets in the fridge, so it's plain tuna.

I did eat some with tzatziki, once, and it was alright. And since tzatziki is basically just plain yogurt with cucumber in it (more stuff, but that's the bulk) I think I'll end up trying to put in some of the plain yogurt I bring up to work on the second can. See how ****ty of a plan that turns out to be.

And, oh god, I didn't buy kale, I bought mustard greens. Oh man, this is terrible...

I eat plain tuna as a snack. It's certainly better mixed with mayo but it's not required for me. I get enough tuna+mayo at subway on weekends

Kale tastes terrible though
You're not wrong. It's also really good for you, so I make myself eat it by taking a bite if chicken or whatever and then a bite of kale and working it down that way.

But mustard greens (which look similar tonkale, which is why I grabbed them on accident : /) taste like ****ing wasabi or something, so I can't push through that way ;x

wait what did i do adam
No u, impostor nerd.
Mayo is gross. I don't value your perspective.

Handmade mayonnaise is good, especially when made with more mustard than necessary.
That thing you call mayonnaise in NA is a sin against god and is basically as worthy of the name mayonnaise as french fries deserve to be called french.

And speaking of gods
now that we finished opm, it's the waifu's turn to pick a show to watch. she picks madoka.

it's been out for, like, 25 years, so we know the basic gist of it, but just two episodes in and it's already getting pretty heavy.
Make sure to watch all 12 episodes and follow it up with the third movie (rebellion). The first 2 movies are just reruns of the 12 episodes. I seriously hope your waifu is ready for what's coming to her.

I'm pretty sad that PM doesn't get nearly as much play at my club anymore. I'm much better at Melee now, so it's not so bad, since I can still compete with our top Melee players, but I'd really like it if we played more PM.

Falco is pretty fun/dumb though. Our club got a weird influx of Falco mains this year. I'd switched to Falco over summer, a Falco main who is a senior and one of our top players now started coming to stuff, a Marth main switched to Falco, a lot of Foxes picked up at least Falco secondaries, etc. But last year we didn't have any Falco mains. We still don't have any ICs but we have decent representation otherwise.

In other news I just found out there is interest here for a kind of video games book club kind of thing, where we all play a short indie game or something and then meet regularly to discuss it. Seems pretty neat, so I'm gonna start running that and hopefully it works out, 'cause I've always thought that'd be fun.
