Now I'm really in the mood to play ToS.
Not sure if nostalgia or not, but I never have as much fun playing any other tales.

The pacing isn't ass like TotA and the combat feels fairly well balanced around the lack of free run. Also, human bosses don't have that stupid thing in every game beyond TotA where they just jump out of combos at every possible chance. 50+ hits forces knockdown and you can reset with Demon Fang/related moves up to 4(?) times before they're forced down.

Idunno, I personally love ToS because there's just enough additional mechanics to perfect the system that ToE helped expand without being overwhelming or giving enemies annoying counter-combo tools.

@ Hinichii.ez.™ Hinichii.ez.™ ToV is great. The human boss combo break thing comes into play which is lame but they also had to counter how silly Overlimit was. Only thing I absolutely despise is they took the abundance of missable items concept from TotA, blew it up to a huge proportion, and gave stupid requirements/flags for acquiring them (whoops, forgot to talk to one specific person early game and they disappeared after an event immediately after; guess I can't get that character's ultimate weapon now). I really hope it can get released on Steam some day.

I still want to play ToD:DC so bad.

Go play ToV
Out of the four main games I played (ToV, ToTA, ToP GBA, ToS) that's my least favorite, or at least tied for least with Phantasia.

Sure, it's better then ToTW, or New World, but I just couldn't like it. It tried to be waaaaay too flashy for its own good.
I kinda wish I had a PS3 so I could play Graces and Xillia, but eh. I'll justify my reasonign later for my love of Symphonia, and try to not sound like a fanboy.

I've only played two Tales Of games and they both had awful stories so I didn't like them

Uggghhhh, you played ToP GBA? Try and get with ToP PSX or ToPX (if the english patch for that progresses any further sometime) and give it another shot. Not mechanically different by much, but at least the presentation isn't dreadful and slow. That being said, ToP is still fairly dated. The original release on SNES is ridiculously archaic although the soundtrack is probably my favorite in the series. Wish Sakuraba had it in him to make more varied tracks like ToP's.

@ Bleck Bleck which ones? Not that it'd make a huge difference because Tales Of stories are never really that great (they're more character-centric than anything). Usually with games with excellent mechanics, I can sometimes ignore the story in favor of the gameplay (I really should play Grandia 2 sometime).

Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia

I'm especially bitter about Vesperia 'cause I feel like that game basically has three stories happening at once and it forces you to be a part of the most boring one

ToV suffers the worst from the "two-thirds full effort, last third half-ass" problem. Everything leading up to the end of the second 'arc' is pretty great imo (the pacing does kinda suck and you're sitting in the dark for a bit too long), but the game basically has to reinstate a new villain that you only saw on the rare occasion. Abyss has a similar issue but it's at least somewhat consistent the whole way (but the whole "fon tech" technobabble could easily turn you off).

And I'm not surprised on the Symphonia remark either. Was it the complete lack of subtlety or just the clicheness of it?

I just want to play Bravely Second because the new jobs are cute and the sidequest choices you have to make look very interesting in a decide your own adventure sort of way.

I wouldn't play any JRPG for its story, even if it was decent the game mechanics are the biggest obstacle by far to enjoying it.

If you mean this for turn-based JRPGs, this is the reason I play Tales games instead.

PM and TTYD are exceptions to this. They're packed with charm and are built in a subplot-centric fashion where the chapters tend to be more enjoyable than the overall plot and as such are the focus of the game. That and I enjoy the customization and simplicity of the battle system.

I hear people are upset about the new Tales game in Japan because their favorite waifu isn't important to the story as was advertised.

Ehh, I read into it a bit and there's more to it than that. Like multiplayer being nearly unplayable because of camera issues, some battle scenes being plagued with camera issues in general, and cutting the FPS in half to make live battle transition scenes work (but the game cuts to victory screens anyways, nullifying the purpose of this).
I mean look at this, god damn:

The whole waifu thing is confusing, but some of the complaints are based more on how she came off to be one of the more important characters in the game, yet gets trashed on by the party, leaves permanently a third or so of the way through the game, and is only re-obtainable through DLC which is ridiculously scummy.

This is all just from looking into it and asking about though. I don't have any personal experience with it.

@ Leafeon Leafeon Idunno if you're making fun of the option of Auto-Battle being a thing or something else altogether. All I know is that a game (if we're referring to FFXIII, that's what it looks like) that is often described as The Tube for its insulting level of linearity doesn't sound like something I'd ever try in my life.

I don't think I've ever had issues with turn based JRPGs mechanics.

Not the best mechanics, but I still get a kick out of them. My taste is also so bad that I can get some enjoyment out of pretty much any game

-----

ToS > ToX > The rest

I'd probably enjoy vesperia more, if I actually got to finish it. I love the characters from the little I got to play of it though.

While I liked Graces. it's story was so "the power of friendship" that it even hurt me a little bit. But I do think I've never had more trouble with a tales of game in terms of difficulty. Even unknown in other ones I've played didn't come close to the top difficulty in graces. Maybe that's just because the AI in graces are ****ing plebs.

Symphonia 2 was a fluke. But playing as OPemil was pretty neat. Wish there wasn't a level 50 cap on all the older characters. Still had fun though

Abyss I enjoyed significantly. I liked Luke's (MC) development more than any other character, even though he was a *****. FOF changes was the best.

Xillia I enjoyed too much for whatever reason. The characters felt solid although Jude was OP. Maybe I enjoyed the difficulty because my friend who is only okay at tales of was playing as jude so the harder battles were never super ez mode.
Accessory customization was fun too. level 100 cap sucks though

Unfortunately that's all I've played though

I tried playing Tales of Symphonia.
Bleeeehhh, I couldn't get myself to like it.

On an unrelated note (sort of), I'm one of those people that can bare bad gameplay if the story is good enough to compensate for it's gameplay. Unless you're Chain of Memories.

Anyway, I was watching PewPewU's video on No Impact Landing, and he said that a useful usage of it is to NIL from the ledge and wavedash. How is this any more beneficial than simply wavelanding from a ledge jump? @SpiderMad, do you know anything?

I think he says ledge hop NIL is really strong because its very ambiguous of an animation, and its less of a comitment

NIL>wavedash only has like 5 extra frames before you can act, and you can chose or chose not to wavedash. More options man, more mixups

I am so tired of "the future of pm" posts.
You and me both. We've dabbled on the future like a BUNCH of times through community heads and figureheads and the like, and a lot of members have already given probably the most concise input possible.

Just like, focus on developing P:M NOW and stop fretting. I'm not gonna sit and worry I have things to practice!

I know that it simply allows more mixups, but I was just wondering if you got bigger frame advantage or something.

Are there any Melee videos where I can see NIL on top platforms (preferably Marth)? I want to see their application in action.
