The premier Super Smash Bros. fan mod, Project M, celebrated its 14th anniversary a few months ago. In that time, it has seen many changes, overcame unthinkable obstacles, and boasted a thriving competitive scene going strong to this very day. Due to its complicated history, the many eras of Project M are concretely split and the many talented players throughout the game's lifespan are not often recognized or celebrated as much as they deserve. In an attempt to bring visibility back to the underground smash game’s history, the Plus Side team is proud to present the Top 100 Project M/+ Players of All Time!
Methodology
Firstly, it’s important to note that this list only includes data up until the end of 2024. It was a long journey to make a list such as this possible, and we set a hard ending point to begin proper work on the list. In a similar vein, this list is primarily centered around the North American Project M scene - international representation in PM, although very strong in many regions around the world, have incredibly sparse crossover, making it exponentially more difficult to rank. We wish to highlight those scenes and will do so for future projects, but it just isn’t feasible for one like this.
Initially, a disorganized list of large events throughout PM’s history was created as a starting point, and a growing list of players were picked out by hand that performed well. Player results were tracked onto a spreadsheet individually, but after a while it became clear that it would take a ridiculous amount of time to make something of all of this data. So instead, we opted to create an all encompassing database on the website braacket.com, which we have now made open for the public to see. While start.gg tournaments are easily imported, older brackets, particularly ones created on Tio that only existed in the form of images, had to be individually recreated, match by match. 135 Project M tournaments, from Pound V to Tussleopolis were imported, and over 5,000 players were logged on the database. From that point, each year was sectioned off, and we created an early draft of top 50 rankings for 2012-2015 (we combined 2011 and 2012 into one ranking period due to sparse tournaments). Those rankings are unrefined and not ready to be released to the public, but helped lay the groundwork to construct the list. From there, each player was compared based on their longevity, peak, and eras they participated in, to determine the top 100.
The Top 100 list will begin on Monday, April 21st - in the meantime, we would like to share one honorable mention, as well as the player that just quite didn’t crack the list: Mr. 101.
In a Reddit AMA over 12 years ago, SSBM legend PPMD was asked his thoughts on Project M. His response was mixed, stating that “P:M confuses me”, but said “...having new characters and balancing the game some IS pretty cool”. This probably explains why he only entered 2 large events for PM - but in those 2 events, he dropped…one set.
Defeating the two best players in 2013 multiple times, TheReflexWonder and Mew2King, PPMD would certainly earn a spot on this list if he entered more, but after his two victories, he bowed out to only focus on Melee. So instead, he earned our one honorable mention.

In a scene filled with hidden bosses and underground talent, Sugydye may be one of the quintessential examples of such players. Sugydye was never ranked in PMRank due to inactivity - despite mainly playing in 2018 and 2019, he did not enter enough major events in either year to qualify. Inside those 2 years of inactivity, however, were solid performances and peak wins that were unrivaled by most in that era.
In 2019 alone, he earned wins over reslived, SipMastah, Ivayne, Blank, and most impressively ThundeRzReiGN. Sugydye’s career, albeit sparse, was incredibly solid.
