Possible SSB regional tournament this summer

Hey guys. So we're now in that post-Apex SSB drought where everyone gets rusty and loses interest because online play sucks for a lot of us. It doesn't have to be that way though. SSB at Apex was so successful that we now have a ton of momentum going into the rest of 2013. It would be a shame to let the hype subside until a full year from now, so Chain-ace and I are thinking about co-hosting a SSB regional tournament in NJ.

There's a few things that are really motivating us to go ahead and organize an event like this. The first is that while Apex is amazing event that provides us with some great resources, it also has a big drawback; due to the scale of Apex, there is no way that the SSB community will ever be able to get the full-fledged tournament experience, including pools and side events. Also, as I mentioned earlier, our community has a lot of momentum right now. The Apex top-4 really got the entire Smash community hyped and inspired, and the tournament also featured the emergence of a lot lesser known names that I'm sure would love another big opportunity to prove themselves to the community.

That said, if we were to host a regional, it would feature the following:

- Summer 2-day event (Saturday / Sunday)
- Singles pools into a double elimination bracket
- Full doubles tournament
- Crews (regional, themed, draft, etc.)
- Melee singles side event (no Melee teams)

Right now this event is not guaranteed and we are just starting the preliminary planning stages. In the meantime, we just want to gauge interest and give people the chance to tell us what they'd want to see for a SSB-dedicated regional tournament. In particular, would there be any out of region interest? Let us know!:)

Obviously we are limited to what venue we can afford for two days. Colleges or arcade/retro stores are probably the best bet. So this should factor the most into the where.

Chain-ace has a lot of possible venues in mind and he already regularly hosts locals so I think we'd be able to find something suitable. That's a big reason why NJ will be the region and not MD - NJ has a ton of venues for Smash tournaments and MD has barely any.

Sounds awesome but... its far. MD would be sick. Not saying I can't go to NJ this summer, but it will make it less likely that I'll go. Nintendude we should carpool if this happens and we both go.

Sounds like an awesome idea though!

Possible other events:

Something involving 12 char battles. Or if that is simply not doable because of time constraints, 3 or 4 char battles with the same rules? You could have players preselect 3/4 characters, and go until they lose those characters. Or don't even preselect, they just pick 3/4 as they go. Or pick like 6/7 possible characters, but only have each person go through 3/4 chars. Multi character competitions are the best.

Low tier tourney:

Exclude the top 6 characters.

But what about 3 char battles? A maximum of 6 games per set isn't far off of a bo5. Plus the stocks could be lowered to 3 or 4.

I might come out if it turns into a big thing (AKA if other out-of-region peeps show)

Pools would be SICK. Real tournaments are exactly what 64 needs, real talk.

12 char battles. 1 life per char. That's 3 less lives than 5-stock best of 3.

yea lol I thought about that, but that would only be good if the players were fairly evenly matched or we kept track of percent. Because against someone way better than you sometimes the only way to make progress against their top characters is to chip away at it. Otherwise they just win, reset their percentage, and win again.

I actually know the campus director of a college in Newark NJ personally. I can see if we can do it there. Since it is a regional thing, being close to the newark airport is a plus and we may be able to get on-campus housing cheaply for people that want to stay at the dorms if we are having the tournament in the summer.

I'll donate $200 towards Isai's plane ticket if he attends and you host an Isai vs 12-other-players, 12 character battle Tacna-style.

If that doesn't happen, I'll be happy to donate $200 anyway for the tournament pot or whatever. It's either one or the other though.

It'd be cool if each region did their own tournament. As awesome it would be to go to this, I just don't see myself driving another 15 hours one way to get there or spending the money on a plane ticket.

I agree with all of this

I might be able to come, but it's tough to fly somewhere for just a weekend.

This is a great idea. I think having it on Saturday/Sunday will make it a lot easier for people to come. Count me in.

Also the further north in Jersey the better. There's more people in the tri-state area than just central New Jersey.

This is good. If you get Isai, Boom, Sensei, JaimeHR, m3gav01t to go then I'm sure me and Kefit will go.

That would be hype but I'd really be surprised if everyone was willing to fly out here only a few months after Apex. Though, if Sedda really puts $200 towards Isai's ticket and Isai comes, maybe that'll inspire the rest to come out too:)

Keep in mind Sensei and m3gav01t are local so I'm sure they would be there no matter what.

I would pay the costs of the entire tournament and everyone's plane tickets if I could, and I don't even play.

Since Melee is going to be on EVO this year, the SSB64 scene will definitely gather some growth off of Melee, and this is the best time for you guys to become as active as possible. You don't want people to lose interest because there isn't much going on (not to say that there isn't, but you know what I mean). You have to make it apparent that the 64 scene is growing stronger to help keep those new players in.

The further south in NJ the better. Meet us mid east coasters like, 1/16th of the way at least

Nice going Nintendude. I was actually planning on creating a stronger SSB presence in the TriState and was going to reach out to chain-ace tomorrow about this. Glad you and him are already getting started :)

I am more than willing to help out and have a possible venue in mind (central NJ). Let's talk more about this.

Also, way to go Sedda for helping promote the hype as well.

Do it so each person can only play each character once. First person to win 7 matches first wins. Maybe make dittos a rule? Also would need some tie-breaking rule.
