Pokemon Video Game Showdown

There's a qualifying quiz, which is too easy. I got 16/20 questions right - you need to get 15 to qualify. I doubt I'll be going, but if there's anyone here who lives on the East Coast that ends up going to the New York qualifying tournament, I might change my mind.

Wow, these rules are complete and utter crap.

http://showdown.pokemon.com/rules/qualifier_rules.xhtml

This is especially lame:

Players may use Pokémon found in the Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl National Dex, between 001 and 491, including those Pokémon imported from earlier video games, with the exception of those Pokémon listed below.

The following Pokémon are ineligible for use in the tournament:

149 - Dragonite
150 - Mewtwo
151 - Mew
248 - Tyranitar
249 - Lugia
250 - Ho-Oh
251 - Celebi
382 - Kyogre
383 - Groudon
384 - Rayquaza
385 - Jirachi
386 - Deoxys
483 - Dialga
484 - Palkia
485 - Heatran
486 - Regigigas
487 - Giratina
489 - Phione
490 - Manaphy
491 - Darkrai
WTF kind of ruleset bans Dragonite and Tyranitar, which are importable from 3rd Gen, and all Ubers not named Wobbuffet? Some of the banned Pokemon aren't even Ubers, like Regigigas and Heatran.

I am NOT playing in this stupid tournament. I'll do friendlies or MM's with anyone who wants to go though.

These rules are horrible. Never trust Nintendo to run a good gaming tournament. Remember about two years ago when they did the tenth anniversary tournament? I was the only person who pre-qualified for the Albequrque area and guess what?

They let in more than the 'one' person in the lottery. I lost. I mean, the guy who beat me beat me fair and square but I still lost.

To add, one of the winners of the national tournament was a hacker (my cousin made the final round and lost). A lot of the people who competed in that were talking about the guy who won -- he had two copies of Ruby. All with the same Pokemon. BUT! One copy had Pokemon with all 999 stats, and the other was a regular, un-hacked cartridge for the hacking check at the tournament.

Just goes to show you how stupid Nintendo really is.

I did some searching on the site - it's 2v2's and a level 50 cap, which is why there's no Dragonite or T-Tar (they evolve @ level 55.) Boring. Unless there's a hacking check, it has no effect on my participation, since I can remake the team to meet their level restriction (I don't catch pre-evo pokemon like Gible or Dratini, I go right for their final evolution - their stats end up being the same anyway.) It's also how I do my EV Training. I don't fight 2v2 though, so I don't want to completely remake my team for it.

Seriously though, what's wrong actually winning through your own ability? I have no respect for cheating that's blatantly obvious. Giving your Pokemon 999 in every stat proves nothing. I've mentioned it before, but anyway:

Back during the R/B/Y days, I went to Philadelphia for multiple Pokemon events. In one of my matches, the girl absolutely destroyed my Mewtwo with a Venusaur. One of the older players there mentioned that she could have been cheating - I got my own GameShark after that and used it for simple stuff - Rare Candies, Master Balls, infinite money. I've never ONCE illegally modified my stats in any Pokemon game. I went to another one in 2000 and won. My movesets weren't illegal and I didn't hack max stats.

Even now, I won't blatantly cheat. Sure, in a one player game, I'll do whatever I want in term of making myself completely broken, but that's because it doesn't affect anyone. You can't even notice I've cheated unless you look at every detail of my Pokemon (level they were met at and location) - my stats don't go a point beyond their natural caps, and I don't give myself moves they can't normally learn (ie my CBMence. I could EASILY give it Outrage, but I don't)

As far as cheating in Pokemon: Among other things, I'll give myself perfect IV's, good natures for my Pokemon, and excellent movesets, but I'll still EV train them myself (though I'm sure there's a code that allows you to do that too); all of that can be done with countless hours of work. I don't have the time for that. I take the easier road.

They are horrible rules though. Wobbuffet use is going to run rampant; I mean, sure, I have my Adamant+Guts C. Scarf Heracross with Night Slash, Megahorn, Close Combat, and Stone Edge, but without T-Tar, Heracross is the only Pokemon I have that can take it down without a problem.

They always to hacking checks. And with Pokemon games it doesn't matter if you restart your game, it'll still count as it hacked. Also don't trade/fight anybody who hacked cause then it will say you hacked as well.

I swear they NEVER checked mine. I guess it wasn't necessary 8 years ago? To be fair, there weren't any "met at level xxx" on "Route xxx" details in R/B/Y. The only real way to tell if they're legit is checking the meeting details, but there's ways around that too. In my case, you can't check by stats, because every single point on mine are 100% legal.

Good job Nintendo,...
for making the worst illegal poke-list ever
dragonite + TTar?
WTFOMGHAX

Hopefully I don't get selected in their random drawing. I don't wanna rework all my Pokemon to be level 50, though I could do so very easily. There's plenty of OU Pokemon to choose from. I can do without Dragonite, but it's gonna suck not having T-Tar.

Yeah I had heard about this event. Even if the rules aren't great they aren't so bad as to be unplayable though. The level 50 cap is the only reason why Dragonite and Tyranitar are banned, since you can't have legit ones at that level.

Regigas and Heatran aren't even ubers, and banning them is kind of pointless, but to those of you complaining about Wobbuffet being allowed obviously don't play 2vs2 much for that matter. In 1vs1 Wobbuffet pretty much keeps you in place to kill unless you can kill it in one shot/immobolize it or whatever, but in teams he's much less of a threat.

On the hacking issue, I'll admit to using AR to obtain pokemon with desired movesets, natures, IV's etc. to play casually/competetively with friends and can see why Nintendo wouldn't want to have any of that in the tournament. But I was planning on legitimately making a team, even possibly restarting my game in order to do so. But if as I'm hearing, a game is still detectable for hacking after it's been restarted then thats a real load of ****.

EDIT: THen again, I didn't read anywhere in the rules that they were doing/capable of doing this sort of check and if hacked pokemon aren't allowed even if they have legitimate stats/moves etc.

Wobbuffet is no more uber than Garchomp...Garchomp played well is guaranteed at least one kill, usually two, often three...Wobbuffet is guaranteed to kill at least one Pokemon, but after that it's revenge killed easy by Pursuit.

And yes, these rules are garbage.

I agree with both of you. I registered and took the quiz, but I don't even know if I'll want to go to this tournament.

Cool, I might register!

Also for the record they didn't restrict Wobbuffet, Shaymin or Arceus...

Ah, that's disappointing. I was going to laugh at the obvious gap in their restrictions, but...whatever.

Anyways, these rules are pretty moronic. I can understand the banning of Tyranitar and Dragonite for the level they evolve at, but still...couldn't they just do the equalizing level thing you can do for regular versus matches? I mean, even if the rules weren't stupid, there's no way I'd rework my whole team to participate.

EDIT: I took the test, 19/20. Waaay too easy. I can't figure out what I would've gotten wrong, though, except for one question; I could swear the question was "Which Pokemon does not evolve by using a Leaf Stone on it?" and two of the answers were Sunkern and Shroomish, so I figured it was a mistake and put Shroomish as my best guess. Then again, I'm beginning to think that maybe one of the other Pokemon also doesn't evolve that way and the question was "Which Pokemon DOES evolve by using a Leaf Stone on it?"

I also took the test again (I made another account using a different email...that fact that you can't take the test more than once using the "for fun" option is a little stupid) and got 18/20. I made a stupid mistake on type matchups, forgetting Bug was super effective against Dark (I know, I can't believe I forgot that...). As for the other thing I got wrong, I can't figure it out. After last time, where I couldn't figure out what I got wrong, I decided to copy-paste all of the questions (with my answers there as well) into Word. I checked every single question to see what I got wrong and I can't figure it out. Either I'm missing something that I got wrong or they had the wrong answer for one question.

In any case, it was too easy. Also, the time limit was pointless...they give you more or less time depending on your age, and...um, what if you lie? And the point is probably because they need some anti-cheating system set up. Meanwhile, I finished it up in about 3 minutes both times, so theoretically, had I really wanted to, I could've pulled out something and checked all of my answers before I submitted it.
