Pokemon: Taboo in Schools?

Lets face it, did anyone get the idea besides me that Pokemon is pretty much a forbidden word in schools? Like, if anyone were to say it on campus, people would stop and point,"haha! Pokenerd!" Not only that, but it also has bad publicity among schools. For example, last year, some people were playing "pokemon battle" on the playground, and lets face it. It was dumb. But does that mean that it really is dumb? This kind of stuff just doesn't help. But it is a good game(better than most). Are these people just too narrow minded to accept the possibility that it might just be ok? Or are they right? I mean, the shows aren't that great in my opinion ( actually, they're a bit corny), but why do so many people hate Pokemon in general?

Discuss.

no duh. its been banned in most schools since it originally began.
When I ever talk about it in school, I usually whisper, refer to "pokemon" as "P", and -Pikachu- is banned in all conversations.

Heh. When I first saw this thread, I thought you meant, like, banning evolution... Never mind.

But, yeah, the mockery is, in part, against people who buy consumer-***** goods, as people who talk about the game often are usually the ones who have purchased multiple sequels. No offense.

Pokemon is a good series (at least the games are), but I've seen all the "Pokemon is the creation of (Fill in the blank)" and "Don't let your child play pokemon; it's too adicting" in the paranting books (No I don't read them...completely). It goes away after a while; a friend and I had a conversation about my 300 attack garchomp and how it can "beat every poke you got in one hit or your HP back," but it's just too adicting for some teachers to let standing. And, in reality, teachers never talk about media past who got voted out on American Idol or Survivor.

WOAH. Hold it right there.

Are you telling me that they actually tell you not to let your kids play Pokemon in parenting books? That's sickening. Next thing you know they'll just put video games in general in there...oh wait, they probably have.

That really irks me, beyond belief. These idiots end up not being able to control their stupid kids, and they can't possibly accept that it's because they've taken on some stupid philosophy like "The kid is always right". Seriously, who came up with not punishing their kids? If you reward your kids for wrongdoings, then they're going to be out of control. I mean, none of us like the idea of being punished, but in the long run, it's probably for the best. I'm not talking about beating them, obviously, just some sort of way to teach them that they can't do whatever they want and get away with it.

But off of that rant, these people can't accept that there are other reasons behind their kids' bad behavior so they blame it on things like video games. I'm really sick of video games being the scapegoat for everyone nowadays.

In my school, saying Pokemon = a cup of instant fail, just add *facepalm*. You have to say, "Pokeman" to get away with it. The reason Pokemon has such a bad rep is because of the anime.

You mean people are stupid enough to not realize "Pokeman" has "Poke" in it?

Who could be that stupid?

This happens? I'm 19 and I wear my love of the Pokemon games with pride, making the odd Pokemon-related joke, and I've never had a bad word said to me about it, neither am I considered 'nerdy' or whatever. It's just a love of something from childhood which still remains, not so much the anime, but the games are still good and I'm still happy to talk about the series. I've got a fair few like-minded Poke-appreciating friends too.

When I read that it seemed like you were trying to say that making sprites mean your addicted. It's not that were "addicted" its just that its fun to see what we can create and its a hobby. If your saying that girl makes recoloured sprites DURING class then she needs help ;)

I edit sprites because it's just a hobby. I'm actually not obsessed with Pokemon at all (if you knew me, you would know that I have been a diehard Zeldanerd for almost 10 years now). I study those games like a religion, but I do recognize that they are not real and I'm able to differentiate between what is real and what is not. Pokemon sprite editing is again - just a hobby. Plus, it's great practice for sprite-drawing (I couldn't draw sprites for my life before I started with the Pokemon editing).

Seems like your trying to make fun of our fusion shop. It's not that were "addicted" its just that its fun to see what we can create. If your saying that girl makes recoloured sprites DURING class then she needs help ;)

I don't think that was personally directed at us, Bowser, but I agree. That's a hobby, it doesn't make us addicted or obsessed. I mean, I love my video games, but just because we edit sprites doesn't mean that we're crazy about Pokemon. I take umbrage to that.

You may not have meant it that way, but the way you worded it, it sounded sort of offensive.

What really bothers me though is the way some people act at school. I mean honestly, who takes the Pokemon anime seriously ? But you know, they talk out loud about Pokemon all the time and even start acting out the pokemon. I mean, I play the Pokemon games, but I don't go, "Go Regirock! ROOOOOOAAAR. Use rock destruction! Regirock killed regice!" "but oh no! Regice rose up from the earth using ice revive!"

Seriously, this probably doesn't help pokemon's rep at all. Sometimes, this even makes me question Pokemon's credibility.

sorry, sometimes I have a lack of words to use. I never meant it like that, I will reword it.

Yes, she makes them during class and one time she was making a list of Pokemon with certain attacks and items to make the best team also during class. She already gets help because she gets out of class one a week and it still doesn't work.

I play Pokemon at lunch with my friend sometimes... I GET TO BE PICHU! OH HELL YEAH!

Seriously, you're afraid because 'o noez, ppl will liek mayk fun of me!!11'. Can't you just ignore them? I play Pokemon, talk about Pokemon, cosplay Pokemon, and argue about Pokemon at lunch with my friends.

I'm not addicted, but it's just a hobby of mine. Video Games in general are what I put most of my time into (15+ hours a week. I play more than most on the MLG Roster). I just love them.

I mean, the N64 was the first system I got so I'm a natural Nintendo fan. I love Nintendo. I'm pissed at Nintendo. The Wii has about ten games that aren't a gimmick. Those games are either called Resident Evil 4, or they're made by Nintendo.

I've been saving for about a year to get a PS3 (mainly for MGS4/KH3 (don't start telling me that it's not announced yet because I know it isn't)) and though I've never even played a Metal Gear game before, I know more about the series than a few of it's diehard followers at my school.

So yeah. I'm a gaming nerd. So sue me.

Back on topic, just ignore people if they make fun of you for liking Pokemon.

Of course it is tabooed in school. As all nerds Pokemon fans know, we should only speak of the game in the presence of another fan of the game. Otherwise your answer shall be something like "Pokemon is so gay. Go home and play with your Pikachus nerd." Then you'll get beaten. There's two kids at my school who still play Pokemon and that's me and my friend Joey. We have learned not to speak of it though and the last time the word "Pokemon" was spoken when Diamond and Pearl came out and that was very quietly. For this reason, neither Joey nor I are blacklisted from society.

There was however once a true gang of nerds (I didn't make fun of them. I just watched desperately as they destroyed any chance at dating a girl in the near future.), ones that made me even hide my face in shame. At first they spent most of their time talking about dragons, but eventually they moved onto Pokemon. I believe they had a Pokemon newspaper for a while and they made their own "Pokemon rescue team" ala Mystery Dungeon. Now, they were not silent and suffered for this and gave us less public nerds a bad name.

I don't know why Pokemon is deemed so childish, whereas Mario can at least be spoken about on school grounds. I suppose nowadays, those games where you require skill and thinking and what-not aren't cool like those guys who play nothing but Call of Duty 4 and Madden whatever. The guys that play sports games to make up for their lack of ability to play sports and play CoD4 because it has blood and is cool. I don't know where Pokemon got its bad rep, but still, mentioning it is skating on thin ice and is not to be thrown in typical conversations.

lol. that's exactly what will happen if you speak of it! In fact, its starting to seem like being a pokemon fan in school is considered criminal. You say it once, and your life is ruined. They just think, " Lol, Pokemons. Hey! What did pikachu say when he got of the bus? Poke-EEE- Mons! lulz. Nerds! Go play with your Pikachu!^

What brings this about?^ Is the world going to catch on fire because of Pokemon? No. Is pokemon uncool? My question to them is: How? How is it uncool to like pokemon? Are you less smart or less cool just because you like it? No. Actually, I seem to find most people who like pokemon are quite intelligent. Long live Pokenerds! lol.:bee:

Edit:
Quote Bored:
"No one at my school goes "haha! Pokenerd!""
Nice School. lol.
