I don’t know how many people this applies too, but for me it was one of my major blocks in my smash game. One thing I lack majorly in life is self confidence. I don’t really have any legitimate reasons why I lack a lot of it. I could go into a deep psycho analysis and tell everyone where I think the lack of self confidence comes from, but I’ll spare you guys the details. This is lack of self confidence was destroying my smash game. I know the IN Melee and Brawl scene very well, so I know who is good and a lot better then me. This inevitably caused a mind set of this guy is a lot better then me so I’ve already lost when ever I played a match. This mind set caused me to lose before the match even started. This summer I moved out to Iowa for an internship and I knew very little about the smash scene. I knew JBM Falcon was one of the best Melee players and Joke490Fronzen was one of the best Brawl players. When I went to my first tournament out there it was impossible for me to have my old mind set because I didn’t know who anyone was. I instantly noticed I played 100 times better then I did in Indiana. Simply because I wasn’t thinking how much better the other person was then me. After realizing this I try to go into every match thinking I can win, no matter who I am playing. This probably seems obvious to pretty much everyone, but it took me around 1 ½ years of playing competitively to realize this. So if you’re going into a match thinking you’ve already lost then you probably already have. Believe in yourself and your abilities no matter who you are playing. And lastly, never give up, trust your instincts .
