hey so i know im a total newb on the forum, but i was wondering if i could get a little pika help. i always play against my friend who uses dk, and he pretty much spams rolling and grabbing me.

is there any good technique to counter that? and while im posting this thing, i might as well ask if there are any good pika combos to use against a heavy character like dk?

thanks!

Well the fact that you're already using pika should put you at a huge advantage, specially if he doesn't use aerials which are DK's only option against pika.

Predict his rolls. Start ground combos from 0% with one or two usmashes. Then follow up with some utilts and then uair him constantly across the stage. Dair is good for techchasing. Can't help you much more than this unless you tell us your skill level and how much you actually know.

Stay in the air, don't get grabbed.

Rolls have lag that you should be able to punish. You should probably be able to fair him and then you can utilt a million times in a row as a combo.

Also pika has really good grabs too so you can just chuck him off the stage and then fsmash or dair or bair to edgeguard

He has to reply to tell us how good he is or how much he knows. For all we know he doesn't even know what teching or zcancelling is, much less the terminology for it.

i'm intermediate i suppose. i z cancel most every one of my moves with only a few scattered forgetful mistakes a game. i've read all the stickies here so i know the terminology and everything, and i incorporate most of it into my game playing.

i might have needed to be a little more specific, lol. he doesn't just roll and throw, he usually uses that time to charge up his punch and occasionally hits me with it (though that's not a problem, often i shield or dodge it). my dair is also more or less neutralized by his upsmash, so i've dropped trying that tactic on him.

If he has trouble with countering rolling, you can't really tell him to implement combos or techchase.

D-Air hits from the side as well. DK's U-Smash has a miniscule hitbox, so you might want to try and be a bit less predictable. It's really quite easy to avoid.

are you not short hopping your down air?

that might be a reason why your being hit

srsly whats good against rolling dks anything, is fsmash. huge range. feel free to spam grabs, too. Or best grimpy move you can make is

bthrow>jump>bair>jump>uair>bair>up b back to stage(lol)

Learn DK's grab range and stay out of it. Don't try and beat his grab with your own unless you want to lose or you have substantially faster reflexes than him.

Predict his rolls. This shouldn't be hard, as rolls are static in nature and can only go one of two directions.

Approach with fast fall bairs and short hop uairs. dair is only good when your opponent isn't expecting it and for tech chasing.

edgeguard with the fsmash, gimp with the bair. That's really all you need. If you really need antiroll advice, here it is: When he starts to roll, kick the *****************ing bejeesus out of him with whatever move you want. Seriously, rolling shouldn't be a problem.

do it back and laugh cause yours is better.
No. No yours is not. DK's grab>pika's grab by over 9000.

I'd keep track of the furthest point he can roll to and keep behind that. I can't say that I've played DK vs Pika matchup too often, so this could be wrong, but I think that pika in general has an easier time playing the priority/spacing game. With that said, wait for him to approach you. More than half the time (assuming an equal skill level) he wil be forced to run into one of your airials. If he wants to do the same thing to you, run as far away as you can and show him that you technically have a projectile. Once should be enough.

avoid the grabs by using a short hop dair right before he attemps the grab. be patient and wait for his rolls so you can punish them. dont camp though =p

inf grab? range? in wat terms are you talking about that DK's grab is better than everyone else's?
Almost everything. Chain grabbing, cargo hold, range, power, combo ability, and knockback. If DK's grab was Yoshi's grab, then he'd might be the worst character in the game, IMO.

hmm I see. I was always under the impression that pikachu had the best grab.

Then again, I don't know much about DK lol

I personally think the 3rd best grab is Falcon's, and then maybe Mario's, due to setups and gimp ability.

I see your point now..Lol

DK's grab is good for combo ability? Its the best for everything else, outside of that.

DK's grab can be used to combo several characters into the punch. It is also the most versatile grab for comboing in the pit. Falcon's grab only allows him to combo heavies and only if they're at low percentage already.

And you can do those gimps with him where you run off and throw them off the side of the stage and up + b. Though it won't always work I suppose.

Jake is definitely dropping Yoshi
Puff has one of the best grabs... depending on the opponent's character. For over half the cast, a grab is an instant death. I'd probably say DK, then Pika, then Puff, then Falcon for top 4 grabs in the game.

I can use falcon's fthrow to combo a fast faller from 0-110%

0-50% - uair, fair, pivot bair, dair, whatever

50-70% - falcon punch

70-110% - dair, pivot tipper uair (the coolest)

The same can be applied to middle weight/falling speed chars like yoshi, dk, mario, pika, except you can't combo them with fthrow past maybe 80 or 90

I think Falcon's grab is a bit better than Puff's because Falcon has the speed advantage with dashing an all :)

its not like Jigglypuff also doesn't have problems doing grabs vs. floaty or medium weight characters.

Falcon has overall a better speed and short hop first hit of fair and similar moves are overall better at setting up grabs than anything that Jigglypuff has.

The main issue I see with Jigglypuff's grab is that its difficult to set up with down air due to being able to DI out of it?
