Looks like it is happening like I had hoped!

The leading third-party manufacturer of video game accessories to release a line of Nintendo GameCube inspired controllers for Wii U, aligning with the release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Sherman Oaks, CA – 5/20/2014 - PDP is proud to announce that they are partnering with Nintendo to develop the Wired Fight Pad, a new line of Classic Controller inspired by the original Nintendo GameCube™ Controller.

The Wired Fight Pad is licensed by Nintendo and designed for use with the Wii and Wii U consoles. The Wired Fight Pad plugs directly into the Wii Remote External Extension Connector. Players can use it for Wii and Wii U games that support the Classic Controller, the Classic Controller Pro, as well as some of Nintendo’s Virtual Console games.

The Wired Fight Pad will feature fan-favorite Nintendo characters such as Mario, Yoshi, and Princess Peach with a shape inspired by the original Nintendo GameCube Controller.

The Wired Fight Pad will be available at game launch at your local video game retailer this holiday season for an estimated SRP of $24.99.

For any and all press inquiries on the Wired Fight Pad, please contact pr@pdp.com.
No pictures of the controller yet.

I'll just use the source used by @ Jumpman84 Jumpman84 . Gonintendo had the article but they don't make the claim that the picture of an old Wii Fightpad is being used unlike Nintendolife.

I understand people's attachment to the gamecube controller, especially after using it for over 1000+ hours playing smash, but I feel like if I got used to the pro controller I could use it better than the gc controller because the pressure sensitive shoulder buttons on the gc controller don't work well for smash bros.

I saw this earlier and I thought the idea was pretty icky. The picture shown was gross looking. (though I know that's not the controller they are using) I think 3rd party controllers are pretty gross. They normally don't work well if they work for long. People are clamoring for it though. It won't be wired to the console so theres still going to be that lag...
But if everyone has lag then nobody does :troll:

This is awesome! I'm unsure at the moment which controller I will use but this is great news for those really wanting to use the gamecube controller.

If nobody is cappable of making an actual wired controller for the WiiU, I'd like to at least have a Wireless GC-styled controller for the WiiU. Connecting a controller to a Wiimote seems too much to me. On the other hand, I'm okay with more companies being involved with creating the ideal smash controller. Pretty good news, nonetheless.

Honestly, third party companies are chomping at the bit to prey on Smashers with this concept.

Prepare for a giant wave of mediocre, third rate hardware designed to look similarly to the GCC just to get all the folks who would be crippled and can't move on to the excellent Wii U Pro to fork over lots of money...because the suckers are gonna break.

I'm just glad people will finally stop complaining. PDP and Nintendo are working on this. There's really no need to worry considering Nintendo's quality control. I mean who here actually thinks Nintendo got involved just to let PDP get away with a cheap knockoff....?

Gamecube controller have been my favourite controller (but the d pad is so bad). I'm ok with the pro controller but a gc one is even better (tbh, I was even ok with the classic controller for the wii even if the stick is too piped out).

I thought this was a troll when I saw the forum title :)
The fact that NINTENDO is partnering with PDP to make a GameCube inspired controller FOR smash bros wii u is awesome! Would've been more awesome if it was wired but still.
Maybe they really are warming up to the competitive scene!
I'll probably use the pro controller through.

Damn it still wireless but oh well... I'll take a wireless GC controller over the Pro Controller any day of the week.

Can't wait to see how it looks! :)

EDIT: Hoping it looks something like this:

Still wireless.

But better then the Wi-U Pro controller still.
You know that without even playing smash with it? Or never mind playing with it, you haven't even seen this one yet! That's a harsh judgement :p

The WiiU pro controller is pretty nice imo, played alot of melee with in on dolphin on my PC. Took some getting used to but had no issues at all with it after the first hour or so. I agree that the G-cube controller is real sweet though. Probably my all time favourite console controller.

Anything is better then the Wii-U Pro controller.

That's how uncomfortable I find it.

Oh, then I feel bad for you my friend and hope that this one will be to your liking. No one, regardless of gender, age, race or class should have to play Smash with an uncomfortable controller! :)

I only hope that the C-stick is better (longer) for FPS style games.

I saw a controller just like that for the ps3 marketed as a "fight stick controller" and could not wrap my head around how that would feel playing Street fighter with that terrible thing.

I just hope that if they a GC style controller they go all in and have the Z trigger(s) be the first shoulder button and not the second one, and they go with the GC button lay out giving much more priority to the A button and spacing the rest of the buttons far enough away from them.

I think people fail to understand that Wii U uses the latest Bluetooth technology (4.0) vs what Wii/PS3/360 used. I've owned my Wii U for a year and a half now and have never had an issue with input delay which seems to be people's concern.

Also, the gamepad pictured in the article IS NOT the gamepad that PR is talking about. That pad is an old Wii PDP Versus Pad that came out years ago.

I hope the build quality is on par with the Wii U Pro controller. That one is far better built than the original GCN controller and it could be my preferred controller for this game. Maybe.

You may change your system. But you can never take our CONTROLLER!

Honestly I would have been cool changing up controllers. That being said. Eh? If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Huh, so they actually listened. It's still wireless, so I'm not sure how much good will come out of it. We'll see.

So uh, remember when we had that thread on a petition for a GCN style controller for the Wii u, and people said that that it'd never happen?

Gotta love how it's coming in the holidays as well as sm4sh for wii u. There's no denying that Nintendo is showing the competitive community lots of love.

Here's the problem: it's still not a wired controller.
The WiiU just doesn't do wired controllers, chief. Nowhere to plug them into. You'd need a different WiiU hardware built to accomodate wired controllers. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Only option I could see would be developing a USB-to-Multi-Tap add-on in conjunction with wired controllers, but I'm not sure how responsive the old multi-tap add-ons were for SNES and PS1... I only used one once for a multiplayer session of Final Doom or something for PS1, like, way back in 1997 or 1999 or something.
