Pac-West Social Room

Instead of constantly fighting the wave of "SPAM" on these boards we (The moderator team) is going to add rooms to each region where you can come and talk about things as a community.

I think this is especially helpful for this region where people can be in the same mini-region(norcal for example) and still be 3 hours away from each other or more.

What this means:

• PacWest as it is now will be primarily used for organizing tournaments and smashfest and on topic discussion
• Spam will be dealt with more strictly now if it is in the wrong section (not the social room)
• If you aren't talking about smash it should be in the social room.
• Postcounts in the social room will be disabled (sorry chok)

Also to make each region more distinct we have been encouraged to come up with a name besides PACWEST SOCIAL ROOM. As soon as the room gets opened I'll open a poll on what some good names for the room could be. Until then use this thread to discuss cool names or talk about how pissed you are that post count will be disabled.

Once the room is created this will get unstickied.

Will you guys make a new "what's in a name" thread? or will we no longer be able to create such threads? Cuz if that's the case, then no one cares about this news. We were already socializing while keeping the social threads to a minimum. One for socal, one for norcal, the melee and brawl PRs for norcal and socal, and one for each area code (which were only half social threads, half smashfest, get together postings). I see nothing wrong with that.

I think the "whats in a name thread" should be fine to recreate. It was one of the reasons why the mods thought this new idea up.

dealing with some concerns brought up:
The room will be an actual different page you need to click on probably at the top or bottom of the main pacwest page. Like if you go to gamefaqs they have a melee-social and a melee-serious (or whatever. I hardly go there)

post count in pacwest wont be disabled. It will be in the social room. I dont really understand how that could be bad. I like talking to everyone so I'd go to the social room and talk. If you like your post count more than the social room thats fine also. But if it was allowed it would just get spammed.

The birthday thread will probably stay locked and get unstickied since a birthday thread could be made for the social room.

you hardly go there, most of us hardly go there, so the majority of us probably prefer this site over gfaqs, yet its being set up similar to gfaqs now.

the point of it being "social" is that it would be independent of the games

not that I think it's a good idea since we will all continue to spam here anyway... it's not like a thread slowly gets derailed (they always do; there's simply not that much that's interesting to talk about for any upcoming tournament), and someone says "ok, let's move the rest of this discussion to the social room"

It's one thing for threads to be derailed off topic, but it's another thing for everyone to start talking about their favorite type of underwear for 3 pages on a major tournament thread. The idea is so people don't have to spend 10 minutes trying to find information about a thread sifting through 8 pages of random spam. It's to save all of us time, I don't see much of a drawback from having to click on more page to create or view a social thread. Talking about rides, who is going to beat who, and such in a tournament thread is still not really off topic that much. But we are talking about the what's in the name thread, look alike-thread, birthday topics, and all that jazz that would go into the social room.

Also, the larger your post count, the larger your special item is - everyone knows that.

i think im just going to turn into a park-status poster
i can understand mods coming into pac west from out of region to mod hugo's infamous porn thread
that was against the tos
even though the punishment was undocumented
but i think its really dumb that something that isnt broken needs to be fixed
that would be
pac west being a fun and social spam filled board

just give 2 point infractions in tournament (aka important) threads, since thats really the only argument i can imagine being for these changes

other than something like, this is not how we intended swf to work
which is dumb

It doesn't necessarily follow that ender & everyone else hardly go to gamefaqs because their threads are setup similarly to this one.

I think this thread is great -- most of the socializing in the separate threads are about General topics, rarely anything region-only. Usually, whenever there's a region-specific topic, it's about trashtalk (which isn't socializing to me) or something else good for community growth.
