Look at what I came across on Twitter last night! I know we're mostly gunning for Andy around here, but could we at least give this a chance?
I see a lot of these "PKMN Trainer-esque" moveset designs for an Advance Wars rep whether that be shifting CO's or Andy switching units the way the Trainer changes PKMN and honestly, i've never been a big fan of the concept TBH. I feel like it needs to be one CO being focused on and said CO has to be the focus in the battle. They can't just be an afterthought to the generic units or share the spotlight with other CO's because otherwise, it just becomes unfocused and the player doesn't have much attachment to said CO.

TBH, I feel like that concept only worked for PKMN Trainer because of how iconic the character is in pop culture. With a franchise like AW that's beloved yet very niche, it would just fall flat IMO. With Andy in the focus, it gives players more of an attachment to the character even if they don't know squat about Advance Wars. If you need proof of this, just think of the 64 days with Ness being a literally who yet still very popular. I feel like Andy would have that same charm to those unfamilar.

That being said, I think the moveset concept is really creative and well-thought out. If I can nitpick just a little bit however, I just want to point out that it's not Sami that excels at long-range combat. That would be Grit from Blue Moon. Sami is the Infantry/Mech specialist.

On that note, it could be interesting if Andy got in and Sami was made a semi-clone of both Andy & Snake. Sami would have similar melee attacks to Snake but would have the same specials as Andy. The only difference is that her Infantry/Mech units would be stronger and her Tanks/Direct units would be weaker.

Can anyone think of a more surprising omission from Smash than the (Advance) Wars series?

This is about more than a playable fighter. No stage? Over 800 tracks, and not a single piece of music? Sure, there are a couple of Spirits. But even the most obscure, random, and 3rd party games got Spirits. Characters that were not even on Nintendo systems got those I think. Advance Wars had a SINGLE assist trophy, and it was one of the few that were REMOVED. Removed from the most comprehensive collection of Smash history? Why?

But this is Advance Wars. A Nintendo made series that goes all the way back to the Famicom. Long running, and with spinoffs. TWELVE games! Twelve games across Famicom, Super Famicom, Game Boy, GBA, NDS, Gamcube, and Wii. I get that it might not be super popular in Japan, or had any recent entries. But there is some OBSCURE stuff with songs in this game. Electroplankton has a stage! There is music from Culdcept and Jam With the Band. A song from Soma Bringer? A Captain Rainbow song? I could keep going.

Advance Wars is filled with colorful characters and wonderful music. It was VERY well received on the GBA and DS. Most would call them must own games of those very successful Nintendo systems.

And the series is made by Intelligent System. It's often considered the sister series to Fire Emblem. Yes, Fire Emblem is a lot more popular. Especially these days. But Fire Emblem has SEVEN (This post was before Byleth was announced) EIGHT fighters, three assist trophies, stages, music tracks... It's got it all. In all this time, was no one at Intelligent Systems trying to pitch some Advance Wars stuff? There are Codename STEAM songs in this game FFS.

I tried to reason that maybe it had to do with content. Like, maybe war was too out of place in Smash? But if Snake is shooting rockets and throwing grenades, I'm not sure why we can't have Andy doing the same.

It's one thing to feel left out of the party. And i know there are fans out there who feel snubbed. But this isn't a 3rd party series we are discussing. It's actually confusing. Does Sakurai secretly hate the series? I'm actually surprised they didn't have a fighter in the series sooner than now.

Some could argue that maybe Andy or someone else could come as DLC. But with the recent announcement of Joker and the wording that was used after, I'm not so sure. It sounds like DLC is going to be a popularity contest. And most likely, more 3rd party. (This post was before Byleth and ARMS were announced).

Can anyone think of an exclusion that makes even LESS sense?

Nice write up dude. Agreed on all these points.

TBH though, I don't really miss the old AW AT from Brawl & Smash 4. I felt that it was a poor representation of what the Wars series is all about and felt really weak. Even more so considering we could have had something like a CO being summoned through the AT and then summoning units of all kinds at the opponent(s) (Tanks, Rockets, Air units, etc) instead of the mindless soliders falling to their death off-stage.

I do, however acknowledge that the AT was the only thing the franchise had going for it really in terms of worthwhile representation in Smash. Sure, there were trophies before but who really cares? With that AT gone, the franchise really doesn't have much life in the game at all aside from the 4 Spirits (which are still missing two of the most important characters in the game and are LITERALLY on the boxart of both GBA games). Which is even more head-scratching when you consider franchises that are more niche and sold less copies were given things like AT's, Mii Costumes, or music tracks in the game. AW was left high and dry in that regard and it's a shame.

AW is a franchise so rich in it's music library. Why can't you incorporate some of those tracks in the game? Like, it doesn't even have to be remixes and all (though that is much preferred). Literally, just rip some GBA tracks and slap it on the game. No effort at all and we get a banger or two added to Ultimate's already inpressive library. Aside from music, it's still dumb that this series didn't even get a Mii Costume when almost every other franchise got one. It's BS but like, it is what it is.

With the introduction of ARMS in this game, things are looking less bleak for Andy I would say. It shows that certain characters/franchises don't need to be really popular or demanded to be in. All that's needed is a desire fron Nintendo to promote said franchise and they can have a golden ticket to the game. Hence, as I mentioned many times in this thread, we should all have our fingers crossed for that mobile game to materialize in the coming months. That's probably the saving grace for Andy and the entire Wars series to ever be redeemed from Ultimate's base game lol.

Thanks to the "Obscure Nintendo Character of the Day" Twitter account, I know another potential character for the rumored AW Mobile.

So I take it everyone has heard the popular rumor that there's going to be no Direct this June? That's what most credible sources are saying so i'm inclined to believe it. Really sucks because it's almost a yearly tradition to have a Direct in June with the big, heavy hitter titles revealed and/or showcased. Kinda like Christmas in June for gamers.

What was interesting, besides that was that Zippo mentioned the possibility that some games that might have been meant to be announced in June (or even the rumored Q1 Direct that may have been cancelled because of COVID-19) could be stealth-dropped at Nintendo's next Investor Meeting. Which really adds up when you think about it. If they're doing away with their usual Direct because of COVID-19, then announcing a lot of their lineup at their fiscial year-end meeting would be a good substitute without having to produce and edit a Direct. It would literally be one trailer after the other without the Direct marketing flair.

In light of that, we may very well end up seeing if the AW Mobile rumors pan out the way we had hoped for earlier in the year. I'm not sure how said Investor Meeting is going to take shape given physical gatherings aren't a thing during these times but if it's held digitally, we could very well see this pan out this coming Thursday/Friday (when the meeting takes place). Lets hope so!

Investor meetings generally have the option to join in through calls, so I think that's just the way they'll do it in the current situation.

Though I don't know if they do it that way in Japan. Still, Nintendo's public overseas as well, so they probably do them at least for their Western investors.

Well now, this isn't exactly what we hoped for, but it is helpful to the rumors.

I mean, everyone and their mother would figure they're planning new mobile games so it isn't really that newsworthy lol. The only thing interesting about that tidbit was as if they wanted to announce whatever new Mobile title at this conference but COVID-19 threw a wrench (haha wrench) in those plans. Maybe not but I don't see why they wouldn't want to announce something like that at their year-end Investor Meeting. This was same place 4 years ago when FEH & AC : PC was announced so go figure.

But yeah, this kinda helps matters and it adds up; trademark, mobile rumors and all. The question sort of becomes when exactly do we get to hear about these plans in a world where Nintendo seems very hesitant to announce/reveal new games releasing more than 3 months away. Makes sense obviously given the times we live in but I am curious how everything pans out in the next 6-9 months or so.

Yeah so I have a lot to take in because we saw two pretty big things happen yesterday with many implications.

The biggest one being Paper Mario of course and how it just sort of came out of nowhere. Obviously, that and the 2D Metroid rumor have been front and center with every Nintendo-related rumor so it's not too surprising. It's just how a game like PM could drop out of blue and only be 2 months away from being released. I mean it's typically something done in Directs and stuff but they deadass just dropped it here and on a relatively short notice.

The precedent being set here is that Nintendo can literally drop anything at any given time releasing in a very short time frame. So for all the other things we've been hearing about like 2D Metroid, Mario/Zelda remasters, etc. they could deadass be dropped a month or two before being announced. I.e. Whatever Metroid game being announced in July/August and releasing in September.

Why is this relevant to Advance Wars? Well, that goes back to the Mobile rumors and the trademark from a while back. If whatever AW Mobile has been in production for this many years, it could deadass be announced at whatever Nintendo Investor meeting (or even completly unrelated like the Paper Mario announcement) and be released a month or two later. Like, getting announced in October/November and releasing in January. So we don't have to worry about said game not being announced for a while I believe. Rumors from months and years are only starting to pan out now.

What this also shows is IntSys being committed to other franchises other than FE. Paper Mario is still a priority for them as seen yesterday, Panel de Pon is being localized in the West after 25-26 years, and there's still the rumors of whatever Wario Ware that happens on the Switch. So between all that and IntSys staff increase from earlier in the year, I honestly don't believe AW Mobile is that unrealistic even more so with the rumors of Golden Sun being remastered. Mobile, as I mentioned is the perfect way to reintroduce the franchise with the new generation as well as older fans who never played Advance Wars. Said Mobile title would also be the catalyst for a Switch game proper with renewed interest in the franchise.

I suppose it's a matter of the waiting game but holy hell i'm really keen on seeing that mystery game finally (hopefully) seeing the light of day lol. Curious to hear what y'all think as well because this can be big for us going forward.

You know, I hadn't noticed this, but you're right, IntSys is being really prolific and making big moves with their non-FE franchises. That bodes well for AW's future.

That's a pretty interesting tidbit. Nintendo is indeed releasing new mobile games in the future but they made it sound like they don't want to be releasing that many new titles and would rather focus on supporting the ones they have running now. That does bode well for Advance Wars still, IMO seeing as that franchise is the only Nintendo series that seems to be in the rumor mill these days when it comes to mobile games.

And Furakawa's comment about how Nintendo views their mobile business as a means to bring in consumers to their core business (and their IP overall) is all the evidence you need that an Advance Wars Switch game would be almost certain if AW Mobile does big numbers. Or even the fact that Nintendo, after 12 years of leaving this series to collect dust can see's the value of bringing this franchise back bodes well for it's return. If the powers that may be think so, then yeah this franchise could potentially see it's own "Awakening" and the 2020's could be to AW what the 2010's were to FE.

Remember, Nintendo doesn't green light projects they don't think they will see a big return on (the only exception being New IP's they want to experiment with). It's the reason so many franchises have been in limbo for so long and why Advance Wars completly missed out on the Wii U/3DS era. I would say it's prospects are looking pretty good in light of that.

All of that certainly makes for interesting times going forward. If this game ends up happening around early-2021 or something, that would make Andy a viable choice for Fighter 9 or Fighter 10 in Smash Ultimate. It would be the easiest cross promotion as well given consumers wouldn't have to spend $80.00 or something to try out the game like they would for a Switch game. Not to mention the audience that the mobile game would recieve would be in the millions thanks to Smash Ultimate's near 20 Million install base.

You know, although I was sorta against the idea of a mobile AW when I first heard of it, I'm definitely starting to see how it could work in a big way. To add on to your statement about reintroducing audiences, Japan could finally get a larger dedicated fandom for AW. Mobile gaming is huge there right now, entire franchises are getting their start with a mobile title. That means even if the AW mobile game does decently well in Japan then it's practically at the finish line in terms of getting a new console game. The name would be somewhat known by the general gaming public over there plus it would earn a few committed fan-artists at least.

I do gotta wonder though, what will it be like? I can see the setting taking place in an original world with its own storyline but (Assuming the gameplay itself isn't butchered to be completely p2w God help us if that happens) you would also be able to recruit COs from the different games via gacha with a handful of original COs here and there. It'd be cool seeing events/scenarios where the DoR and GBA cast interact with eachother. Speaking of characters from different universes interacting, what would you guys like to see in terms of crossover events if there are any?

Potential crossovers? Well, Fire Emblem is a given, but didn't Samus appear in one of the Famicom games? Maybe they could reference that.

It’d be cool to see them go the “reimagining” route to make the characters fit the aesthetics a bit better, though regular Marth but with a gun would be fine too.

Dude you just took the words out of my mouth. These are very good points.

For a lot of people, said Mobile game is going to be their first entry in to the franchise given how many new people never played Advance Wars before. Think about all the new people who didn't play video games until post-2008 that are being introduced to this franchise through that. Of course; Advance Wars has it's legacy in the West (Famicom Wars as well in Japan) but for a lot of people, it might as well be any other new IP like Dragalia Lost. So in that regard, millions of people are going to be introduced to the IP which is the intended goal according to Nintendo's president.

I would think positive word of mouth said Mobile game would get from those familar with the franchise would be enough for your average gamer to take notice (given how beloved this franchise is in the gaming public). And like you said, lots of committed fanartists and people making fan-made content for the franchise would skyrocket. The Wars series would not only have a solid foothold in the West (it kinda still does but time has gone against it pretty hard) but it would finally gain the following in Japan it's been missing since the GBA days (thanks to a series of unfortunate events and Dual Strike's commercial performance). And really, the Wars series needs to have that dedicated following in Nintendo's home country if the series is going to have a future. Something a mobile game would do in spades.

As for the nature of said Mobile game, I would think it would be something similar to FEH's design but with a little less focus on the characters (given AW doesn't have nearly as many characters compared to it's sister series). That being said, I still expect CO's to be front and center when it comes to marketing for this game. Given what IntSys said back in 2017, I would expect lots of interaction between CO's as well as diving really deep in their skills/abillities, personality, etc. Expect to see plenty of interaction between Wars World CO's and DoR CO's, new CO's created for this game, as well as reintroducing some of the older CO's from Super Famicom Wars days (maybe not Hetler tho lmao). Creating/sharing maps would be a huge component of this game and battling locally or maybe even online would be another huge selling point. The player would likely spend money on different types of units, costumes, and skills. I'm only scratching the surface here because there's so many possibillites here. If there's one thing I hope really makes a comeback however, it would be the AW1 animations that were ditched after the first GBA game. Those animations as well as the character facial expressions gave the game so much life and charm to it. I hope that comes back, maybe even in the artsyle of AW1 again. I would even be down if they hired the artists involved with the Ace Attorney franchise given how similar the aesthics are.

FE is the most obvious and it really should happen given the link the two series have. They could go even further with the crossover by having AW characters in FE-costumes and FE ones wearing AW outfits. Imagine Andy as an FE Lord and like Hector wielding a big ass mech lmao.

Of course, i'd also like guest apperances to happen as well. Samus is obvious given she appeared in the first ever Wars game but that's just scratching the surface. Personally, i'd like to see Snake in because i've been dying to see a Metal Gear/Advance Wars crossover of sorts and there's no gurantee it'll happen in Smash (as much as i'm hoping haha).

Hey, haven't been around this thread in a while, how're things looking for Andy and AW?
Good timing actually. I wanted to share this article with you guys that I found to be pretty interesting. Mind you, it doesn't pertain directly to Advance Wars but I still found the comment to be interesting. It was an interview with a Nintendo producer regarding Shulk in Smash Bros and how that helped the Xenoblade franchise. See the link below.

https://nintendoeverything.com/nint...types-of-players-through-smash-bros-was-huge/

Why do I bring this up here? Well aside from the AW Mobile rumors that we talked about at length here, if those rumors were to be true then it stands to reason how Andy could wind up on the playable roster of Smash Ultimate.

In particular, the producer talks about how Shulk in Smash enticed non-JRPG fans to try out the Xenoblade franchise leading to that series getting a big boost in popularity (almost to the point where you could argue it's Nintendo's staple RPG franchise).

What I was thinking reading that is how Smash Bros could have the same appeal in having non-TBS fans checking out whatever new Mobile game comes out if Andy where included in Smash Ultimate. I mean it adds up when you consider that Turn-Based Strategy games aren't that popular or "marketable" on their own so having Smash visibillity would go a long way for a series like Advance Wars.

And really, it's not like the concept is far out there. I honestly believe we're seeing a taste of what the producer said with the inclusion of an ARMS character in Smash Ultimate. A series that has much to gain having a playable character in Smash Bros and you know full well it's going to be a lot more well-known among gaming fans as a result.

So with that in mind, I could see that going in Andy's favor assuming the rumors are true and all that stuff. Given how Nintendo's reveal schedule is however, that can take some time and we might not see the game announced until like a month or two before realese (hell, maybe even the same month).

Anyways, share your thoughts guys and tell me what you think. Would be nice to get some discussion going on here given we're likely less than a week away from the ARMS Presentation (maybe even Fighter 7's reveal as well).

Even getting AW on mobile would be great although I’d prefer it on the Switch. Getting the series out there in anyway would be fantastic.

I’d love to have Andy as a playable character, but more than that I really just want the series to come back. Similar to how Isaac is my most wanted character, but what I really want is Golden Sun to return.

In a perfect world Andy and Isaac would both be playable and Nintendo would realize how great both IP’s are and actually do something with them. It baffles me with how successful Fire Emblem has gotten the last decade that they haven’t realized the potential gold mine they’re sitting on with the Wars series.

Yeah, the notion of Smash introducing people to a new franchise is pretty good for our case, and I'd argue that it should be used more by Nintendo. They have a very strong advertising tool with Smash, so it's weird not to see it used more often and to its full extent. But still, it's great to have the acknowledgement.

So, I'm not the only that feels like Nintendo doesn't use Smash's marketing ability to its full potential, huh?

I mean, I have I always felt like Smash has gained more than enough popularity to add 1-2 Japan-prominent characters, not to mention the obscure characters that would benefit. Heck, I've even said that Chibi-Robo would have benefited from a playable appearance in Smash 4.

It's not only that but you also got to consider how many IP's could have benefited from the Smash exposure. Especially the ones that faded away over time. Of course, Advance Wars & Golden Sun are the most prominent examples of this but also smaller series like Custom Robo, Sin & Punishment, Chibi-Robo, etc.

Even more sad when you consider the fact that Nintendo dropped the ball really hard with these franchises with bad marketing and/or bad timing. Hell, it was almost a signature Nintendo move in the 2000's to butcher a game's prospects by having a crap marketing campaign for it. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn comes to mind but also Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. That game literally skipped out of the E3 2007 conference Nintendo had and was shown in a close door meeting instead. It's a miracle that game was even able to do close to the GBA sales numbers Dual Strike failed to do.

Bottom line is, having those characters in Smash is a sure fire way to keep these franchises in the minds of Nintendo/gaming fans even when said franchise is in the ****ter. Hell, I would argue FE benefited from this greately when that franchise was in the toilet pre-2012/2013. AW or even GS having this luxary might have shortened the hiatuses they took after the Wii/DS era.

But alas, we can only hope things work out in AW's favor now. Even with everything I said taken in to account, AW coming back and having Andy in Smash Ultimate would do it so much good and it will be come back in a way it's never done before. In that, of course it's level of success would far surpass it's success from the GBA era. AW1 was able to do 700K units not even including Japan. Imagine how well a new console AW game would do with Smash & mobile exposure. We're talking in the millions most likely maybe even 2 million-ish. Wargroove, a spirtual succesor to AW did something like 1M+ units across all it's releases so the precedent is there.

Wargoove sold more than any AW game? I wonder if this could be due to game rentals being less popular now than when AW was an active series, as you'd most likely need to buy it in order to experience its gameplay.

Yep. On STEAM alone, it has 200K Units sold and the Nintendo Switch version was the best selling game on the Switch E-Shop in February 2019. Couple that in with the Xbox One, PS4, and physical copy editions and this game has done well over a million at this point.

Of course, you have to remember the gaming audience is larger than it was back in the 2000's and Wargroove benefited from positive, word of mouth reception. This was essentially the first time most people got to play an Advance Wars-like game since 2008 (barring Tiny Metal I guess) so hype levels were off the roof.

As for AW's sales, it was hurt pretty badly by bad marketing and unfortunate circumstances as mentioned before. Piracy was also a big factor for many GBA releases as well (DS as well to a lesser extent). But the fact that AW1 was able to do half a million copies in North America alone is a big testament to it's success and lasting legacy, even with all the things working against it. So I have no doubt a new AW is a bonfide million+ seller at minimum taking all this in to account.

Weird question, but I saw something on Twitter about a leak for Super Smash Flash 2 leak involving Andy. Does anybody know anything about that?

Yeah, this has been common knowledge since last year (even 2018 for some places). I kinda wanted to avoid talking about it in this thread out of respect for the McLeodGaming devs but I guess the cat is out of the bag lol.

I really hope Andy is one of the reveals this year if McLeodGaming does their annual triple reveal thingy. I know they would do the character justice and Andy being in SSF2 is the next best thing to being in Ultimate (hopefully, both end up happening lol).

The Western side of Pop Star.
For a while now, I've had a theory that King Boo might be one of the DLC inclusions due to the conspicuous lack of LM3 content beyond Luigi's throws, and Imran Khan's statement only adds onto this. It could also give a chance for Rex & Pyra to come in earnest, although it's too early to tell.

As for tomorrow's presentation, I believe that the ARMS character will come with some sort of surprise. I can't say for sure what it'll be, so we'll have to wait.

What did Khan say this time?

Imran mentioned that he heard or believes that this Pass will be kinda the reverse FP1 with like 2 third parties and the rest first party. Which bodes fairly well for our boy's chances.

Well King Boo in the roster would be a huge upset to both Geno & PM fans. I kinda thought the idea of KB in the Pass was silly before but in light of recent events, I don't think it's impossible anymore. LM3 not having it's Spirit Board is sus so like, I can def see why someone would think that especially after 3H in FP1.

With that being said, the advantage is def going to franchises that have their game on the Switch or are being supported (evergreen titles as Imran Khan mentioned). So more than ever, we need to hope that Mobile game is legit and is bound for early-2021. Because if it's real, Andy's chances take a huge boost and is a viable pick for DLC.

Well, we may be in a tough spot. Apparently, Nintendo recently confirmed that they won't be going as in-depth with the mobile market as previously thought. This might hurt that rumored AW Mobile game...

I wouldn't worry too much TBH. I just see this as a move in response to the Switch performing as well as it did and the likes of AC doing much better on console than it did mobile. Maybe going forward, Mobile will be less of an incentive for Nintendo but it's still a major revenue stream for the company. I don't see them leaving it anytime soon.

And besides, clearly there's more titles coming in the future as stated by Mr. Toto as well as Nintendo's statement from a month & a half ago. Also keep in mind that the selection for for FP2 was locked in before 2020 even started so I don't see this being a big detriment to Andy's chances. If he's not in, it'll likely not have much to do with this.

So instead of AW Mobile let’s get AW Switch. Switch Wars!

Also, one interesting tidbit I saw on that article is from Nintendo's mobile partner, DeNA with them basically saying not to expect any new titles revealed until "near the end" of the fiscial year. That lines up pretty well with what I thought beforehand with whatever new mobile game not being revealed until early-2021. More than likely, they'll want a really short reveal-release window especially for a franchise like AW that can't dip from the public eye too quickly.

So a likely scenario in this case would be AW Mobile being revealed in the late-Jan investor conference in 2021 and then releasing in Feb/Mar that year. Quick turnover between it's reveal and it's release. Get everyone hyped about the return of the franchise and have it buzzing on the internet for some weeks and then launch it to widespread interest. At least that's how I think it should go down to ensure it's success.
So instead of AW Mobile let’s get AW Switch. Switch Wars!
I wish dude haha. Of course, Switch Wars is something I want to see happen but the franchise needs to be proven before that can happen I think. Hence, why we all need this rumored game to succeed for AW's console return aspirations to happen lol.
