I think we are at the point where the "celebrities" themselves are merely fictional characters engineered by publicity managers and the marketers of their movies (or whatever), that just so happen to have the face and body of a real person attached to them. That is, the public image is just as fictional as a movie/TV character. And from there it's not a huge step to ditching the real person altogether and simply creating a virtual celebrity, a la Macross Plus or William Gibson's Idoru.
