is it true you have to see a pokemon 40 times in a row using the radar to catch a shiny because I tried that today for 6 hours and my record is 7 times in a row for a shinx. I am terribly unlucky

i was just chaining shinx, and right now, i chained 42. can anyone tell me how you can tell the difference between shiny patch of grass and the one that has white stuff in it that contains rare pokemon. to me, they are almost exactly the same.
