One of my friends is a really good Gears of War player, and he says that when people find out that he's black they start to show a lot of prejudice to him and his crew saying stuff like: "I ain't gonna get beat by no stupid *n-word*". It doesn't bother him cuz he always ***** those guys in the end. GoW is the only game from which I've heard there is online racism, but I'm sure it happens in many other online games with chat features.

I certainly hope this doesn't come to Brawl, because it'll make online play less inviting. And I'm not talking just about white-black racism, I mean any racism. What are your thoughts on the matter? Would online racism affect you in any way? Do you think there will be online racism? Do you hear about online racism in other games?

I don't really care about this considering I don't care the race of the person I'm playing. Anyone of any race can be better at Smash than I am, so it doesn't really matter who I'm facing imo.

Lol i dont really care cause im not black but theres nothing we can really do about those people. Lol just own them to shut them up. Plus there isnt really a way to communicate directly except with those little taunt saying thingies and we cant even do that against strangers. You will never find out peoples races unless they are your friend.

Well let's see, you don't know who your opponent is and you can't communicate with your opponent via text or voice. Ya.. i see a lot of potential racism there.

Seeing as that online chatting isn't likely to happen, I don't have to worry about Mexican slurs. Then again, I shrug it off unless it's something that implies a hate crime.

It's stupid if you ask me, I thought being racist was on its merry way out of this world. Bah.

Won't come to Brawl though. Friends lists.

From what I've seen, that only really happens on X-Box Live. I rarely, if ever, come across racism when I play PC games online.

It is 100% HIGHLY doubtful that there will be any racism in Brawl PERIOD!!

Just think about it...We go to tournaments, smashfests, meet up at different destinations to Smash. And I know **** well there's no racism going on at all when we're all together at one place jus to play video games. C'mon, now!! :ohwell:

So, if there isn't any racism going on in real life tournies, then what makes you think it could be worst than that online??

Let's get it right. :)

You can't talk to people that aren't on your friends list. This thread is pointless.

This sort of debate is EXACTLY why Nintendo is being insanely careful with the Wi-Fi mode... no way to communicate through headphones and such not only ensures less lag, but you won't get any jerks suddenly spouting nasty things at you just because they fell off. The friend codes also ensure you only play with good, decent people as well...

The only real ways you could be racist from what I've seen are having a generally demeaning username, having a rude taunt and absolutely refusing to play as somebody like Donkey Kong or Ganondorf. (of course the last reason would a gigantic stretch in itself, especially if they are suddenly top-tier in this game)

Your username isn't shown outside of friends matches. Again, you people forget the details.

Heheh, I knew I was forgetting a little detail like that... well, there's always the small chance you could make friends with someone with a really nasty username, but why you would want to is beyond me! :chuckle:

my name on Halo is NiggaJohn. I only use it when I go to my friend Bunmi's house. He gets sad but I bring him shiny baubles and grape kool-aid so he forgives me.

Just to settle this debate... I will bring racism to brawl for everyone. No one knows my race so I will just be as racist as I can to everybody. I will start with native americans and work my way to white, asian, then spanish followed by indian, jamaican, african and then ethiopian. It will be a wonderful rainbow of racism where no one group will feel left out. I don't discriminate... I hate everyone equally:D

Never thought about racism. Well watever, f*** racists, and I something tells me even people we add to our friend's list will be racists. And how do we know that Sakurai isn't going to make the text bubble taunt a option in Brawl for Wi-Fi=??? However, I doubt it, since racism and scrubs are the main thing I hate about Halo 2, Gears of War, Resistance: Fall of Man, Counter-Strike, and Rainbow: Six Vegas' online. F*** racists. O, and I'm not a racist, I hate everybody equally. (had to say it)

^ LOL, I didn't even know you stole my line.... :ohwell: Dang, well I should just be racist against everyone, especially myself. If you're gonna face me, you're gonna hear a lot of American, French, and German racism. :chuckle: Hating everyone equally FTW! :psycho:

WELL... you can't communicate, but if they can see your avatar, and if you have a Mii, they could guess your race.

That's a possibility.

(Not that I care, I don't have a Mii, my Miis are Link and Tori Amos... and I won't be using them as avatars, and I'm latin american, but mixed with caucasian)

I agree on brawl not having so much............. but................... racisim comes no matter what and the people who say it are **** (yes even as jokes) but the fact that racisim is actually growing in the world right now (all these terrorist attacks and the stereotype that middle easteners are the type who always do it...........) sigh........... racism always happen though that proabably won't happen in brawl execpt as freindly jokes towards friends (even if it is stupid it does happen)

*note* im not to say that im superior because my friends occasionally do the same thing but they don't mean it like alot of the other people mean it.

so in conclusion yes racism is going to happen online but has a less chance of happening on brawl (though only as jokes through freind lists)

THere's a lot of racism in Counter-Strike too.
Brawl won't have this problem cause as a lot of people said, you can't communicate with people not on your friend's list. I doubt one person will change 1 macro to the n-word.

But lets say you add someone to your friend's lsit who's a racist, or Brawl has a rival system like many DS games, and you can communicate with them. Or even if you CAN use text to speak to random people. Then wat=??? Fact is, all those are liable options, sadly. So keep that in mind. ;)

For your little taunt catch phrase thing, you could always put "I'm black" or "I'm arab" or "I'm white" and see if the guy you were facing plays you again with a racist comment back at you xD

I shouldn't worry, nobody takes racism seriously anymore, anyway. Or any kind of -ism for that matter.

If I were to say something like "I'm a cracka. I live with three other crackas and one ni**er. One of the other crackas is my b*tch, and the rest of us are pimps. Sometimes, the ni**er's b*tch and a chinaman come round and we all play Smash Bros. til sun-up. I intend to do it tomorrow, and that ni**er and the chinaman are gonna lose. Badly." the only people who would get offended are UPTIGHT, considering the ni**er in question doesn't get offended, even when I call him "gay ni**er" to his face.

Nobody gets offended in my house because it's all fun and jokes.

You can't escape idiots playing video games, so you may encounter it somewhere. If they offend, just realize they probably haven't ever had a girlfriend.
