We want ranking so there will be a way to know who is good and seek them out. Alot of us want to be the best we can at this game.

Why do people want ranking systems -_-

I'm genuinely curious. It's not like online matches will matter much, and it's pretty improbable that any of us would be any high on it.
it's just kinda nice to see how you compare to the rest of the world. That said It's not a big deal. I just wish rather than having 2 modes the random mode worked just like the friends mode. Or have a third mode, so if you want to play random unranked matches you could but you have the option of playing with people and seeing their names and taunts.

Still though i'm happy to have online at all. I was startin to worry it was cut.

cause someone asked

This game supports Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. If you connect your Wii to the Internet, you can enjoy linked battles with distant people!

For details, click here.

But because this form of communication is greatly affected by the distance between you and your opponent, your brawls may not run smoothly if you’re really far apart—like, for instance, if you’re connecting between Japan and America.

The more distant you are, the worse your connection becomes, and the slower it feels. I apologize, but I hope you understand.

This is the main menu for Wi-Fi!

There are two primary connection methods. The names of these methods are "With Friends" and "With Anyone." The menus and structures of each method are pretty different.

With Friends

Wii friends who have registered one another’s names can play together freely.

Register your friends!

If you’re registered as friends, you can check each other’s status. If a friend is online and you earn his or her consent, you can enter a battle.

You can change your icon...

And even send short messages during brawls!

These short messages are entered in advance, and you send them by taunting. There are four messages for the four directions on the + Control Pad: Up, down, left and right.

With friends, you can brawl any way you like. And there are other modes besides just free-for-alls.

With Anyone

You can also battle with people you don’t know who are looking for brawls. The most important point here is that you will not know each other’s names.

If you think of your opponent as a simple scarecrow, any psychological barriers may melt away.

Your opponent will not know your name or any information about you, and neither of you can send short messages. There will also be no battle records kept for this mode, so whether you win or lose, it doesn’t matter. Just sit back and play.

Now, while you’re waiting for a match to start, you can kill time with a little practice on Sandbag.

Practice, practice!

We’re planning a number of services that make use of Wi-Fi, but we’ll reveal them gradually with the other modes. Enjoy.

ranking wouldn't help you seek out the best players. if you're playing someone who isn't on your friends list, it'll be a completely random match up anyway.

To fight people at similar fighting levels, not just noobs. [not calling anyone here a noob in specific] But ya, this is good enough. I have a feeling it will be JUSDT LIKE METROID PRIME HUNTERS. Simply put, voice is on before and after matches, but not during matches. Maybe a minimal ranking system [unlike Hunters, which revolves around 3 or 4 rankings], but still a nice touch. :)

And I can't wait to face you all in the future. However, I'm going to have to hide from some people. Seriously. XD

Thats why we wanted ranking and a lobby instead of some random match up crap.

We are allowed to exchange friends codes on this site right? While the random match ups are annoying if I can exchange on big sites like this it won't be as much of a problem.

BEST UPDATE EVER!

Forget My music, forget Zelda surprise, forget assists, f9orget final smashes, forget Ice Climbers.

This is the biggest news thus far. And it also mentions it's worldwide.

I can see boards lighting up tonight.

I guess he knew too it was day 100.

Or he just did it out of the blue.

But I can't wait to face some of you. And now this makes me want Sonic to be in there even more. Say goodbye Mario lovers. Sega will have its revenge. lol.

Nah i'm kidding, I love Mario more than Sonic. But it justwould be cool to kick some *** with Sonic worldwide.

I just hope PAL regions aren't screwed too much.

With the ranking system though I would just like to know where I am to the rest of the world, so I am disappointed by that too. Though knowing how many smashers there could be... probably be hard to keep track. A top 10 or 20 players would of been nice though.

I hope you still see your rank with mates though.

Also, it looks like random matches are limited to 4 players FFA. So you cant do 1v1.
he doesn't explain any of the features of random matches. I bet you'll be able to choose a few little things like 1 vs 1 or 4 player free for all, items/no items

Just looking at it, it looks like it seeks 4 players and if the timer reaches 0 before it can find 4, it starts with less.

I'm very skeptical about this.

Thats like saying in 4 player matches, you can only use Mario, Yoshi, Ike and Wario.

Seriously, theres no proof that theres no 1v1, 2v2, etc.

Im 99.9% sure that 1v1's will be available

so, what was confirmed today? online is in, which is awesome, but slightly screwed. come on, no names, no taunts, no rankings, do nintendo even realise what online can be? god, we arent all 10 year olds that need protecting. isnt that what the parental controls are for? ok, we also have mii support confirmed, though i now doubt mii's will be playable, though it is still possible. we also have the sandbag returning, and whatever mode that was in. cant remember the name. hopefully it will be improved, no idea how though. we also have proof of different taunts, or at least thats what i think he meant. how will that work on the wii remote alone? and we can also pick which little picture goes with our percentages. not bad for one update. I think it would be weird playing as mario with a avatar of ike though...

the first player probably picks the settings. we just can't tell from that picture because the match has already been set.

I'm happy. The random Wi-Fi is going to work similar to MKDS it seems, where you all select your characters and stages, and it will randomly select one of the stages chosen. There's probably a preset mode, or a few modes to vote on.

Most likely items will be left on random.

I dont like this update. WiFi seems more limiting than any online game I've ever played.

I really hate to say it, but the lack of a lobby and ability to join games on your own is very disheartening.

There SHOULD be a lobby where you sit and discuss the match settings with VOICE CHAT. I really hate nintendo for being so blind with online.

yea!!! and yet I cry. I live in Korea. I'm tormented with the curse of slow wifi.
Spain here, where 1Mb connections go 32 kb/s when you're lucky. So I feel your pain, man.

Anyway, awesome update. This is very, very nice, and will make a lot of people sigh with relief of proportions untold. I'll probably play it a lot, too - I need to practice against people who can beat me, to learn a bit. Being a complete noob surrounded by more noobs tends to mean you suck .
