OMG twitter?

I'm too lazy to try and research this myself...
(and by research I mean wikipedia) so I'll just ask you guys.
What exactly is Twitter about? I'm somewhat intregued and
after seeing the episode of The Tonight Show where Bill Gates
talked about having one, I'm sure it can't be too bad.
What are your opinions and do you really think it's worth the time?

Some people like it, other perople don't. Some say it just continues the trend of sharing things that 10 years ago wouldn't be shared (Ie, Penny arcade on 2008/4/23/), others say it's a great tool to keep in contact with friends. Personally I find it's a bit eh, the only time I come close to using it is reading the twitter feeds on webcomics to work out when the next update is coming.

Hmm... I always hear about the latest new things like Twitter, Skype, Qwerty keypad (yea I know, it's a keyboard), but lately I haven't been keeping up since i'm always so darn busy.
