Olimar Videos Worth Seeing
So, over the past week or so I actually went through and checked/watched every 1v1 video we have so far. Not only that but I tried to really watch each one, looking for points of interest and level of play. For instance while doing this is when i noticed echo's weird grab that i asked about in his guide thread, as well as noticed the trends of good positioning i wrote that book about in the olimer recovery thread.
Anyway, also taking into consideration quality of the recording, and details like computer players and items, I've got a ton of notes I'm gonna throw out there, take my opinion for whatever its worth. If i don't mention a particular video that you think is great, feel free to point it out/argue/flame me even if you feel the need. Likewise if i consider a video poor that you disagree with me on, its just my opinion state yours we'll talk about it. Also it took me a week to do, I may have missed a new video during that time, I just worked top to bottom.
Down
First, these video links no longer work:
Pokemon Trainer:
The
3rd video listed, supposedly at Final Destination (FD) is not there. Also, the
4th video is against sheik, not PKMNT.
Snake: The 6th video, Echo vs Knorr, is no longer up.
Wolf:The
entire Tomato Soup vs Sniper series is down (videos 1-3).
Zelda: The
1st video, on Bridge, is down i'm 99% sure, it leads to ign so maybe its members only, but i think its just plain down.
Top Picks
These next videos are Top Picks in my opinion, they have great play/quality/competition etc In No Particular Order:
DSF vs Gimpy(MK)1 @Battle Field(BF): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47QIkWGPm7c
This is a perfect example of DSF's style of Olimar. Make sure to check the % of MK when he loses his second stock to an USmash. Of note also is his great positioning through this match. It is a hard fought match, though Gimpy had the opportunity to gimp DSF a couple time and did not.
DSF vs Champ(Fox): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYKR_tCNzfY
Another of DSF's hard fought games, it shows olimar survivability using good central positioning, and the struggles when on the outside. In particular DSF makes good use of upsmash in this fight, though he misses a few times a couple of the hits exemplify its KO ability and strength. Also good spacing between Olimar and his opponent is noticeable in this video.
Woker vs Anji(Link): http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=c3qmrB4DUI0
Again a good Olimar showing great positioning in the middle of the map. This video is also somewhat unique as neither Echo nor DSF make much use of UpB offensively the way Woker does. Woker however could make better/earlier use of Olimar KO moves to improve performance.
DSF vs Lucky(Marth) 2 @BF: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjNH-zOCpt0
Again solid positioning and play out of DSF. Whats special here in particular is DSF's ground game mastery with Oli in this video, making great use of grab and FSmash's range. Some little things to see also was some good recovery against ledge hogging, and an example or attempt at using air dodge DI. Also this is a very difficult matchup for Olimar, perhaps Lucky isn't the best marth, but things could possibly be learned from this win.
Ninja Edd vs Diem(Lucas) @FD: http://youtube.com/watch?v=GLPgCa6imKM
A great example of pikmin spam and grab range, honestly that nearly sums up this Edd's strategy this game, apart from the times he decides to spam DSmash. This video shows fairly constant pressure from pikmin barrage, quickly racking up % or at least trading % with Lucas allowing for KOs. This is a solid example of a fundamental aspect of Olimar, even if the battle seems to be even, usually Olimar has put up more % than the other guy, trading with Oli rarely leaves Olimar with higher % overall.
Echo vs Lozr(Marth): http://youtube.com/watch?v=l47gyvqofpQ
Echo being himself in this video. Great ground play just as in DSF's match vs Lucky. It was in this video I noticed the weird grab Echo had, seemingly grabbing Loz from the ledge. This is a hard fought game against a tough opponent for Olimar, overall a great watch.
DSF vs Gimpy(MK) 2 and 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nPx9_ys9iI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSePZe3KUnk
These two videos, or really the entire winner finals series between DSF and Gimpy are great to watch, not necessarily just for DSF's Oli, but to understand the struggles P&O are going to face. You can literally see Gimpy find, and progressively exploit these weaknesses. These two videos in particular are a great example of the struggles Olimar mains are going to have to overcome.
Echo vs Karn(ROB) entire series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wTBB6vH0E0 (1st)
This entire set shows different specifics of, and in general, good Olimar play. This series in my mind at least is sorta what made Echo the figure he is today in the Olimer community here, and show the earliest excelling at Olimar specifics. These videos are as much a part of Olimar history as they are still some of the strongest examples of good Olimar play we have so far to learn from.
NOTABLE:
Next I have listed videos that are noted for specific reasons. Not quite all around great videos like above, but worth a look for specific reasons mentioned and general good play:
Echo vs Osiyo(MK): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc0Vy7BlMxI
This is the video example of purple pikmin throw to allow recovery. (So does Echo vs Karn(ROB)4) It also has good shield to USmash.
DSF vs Champ(Snake)3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0Yc49GI7ZA
This is actually the 4th game of the series, but whats really important was the general good map control by DSF, through the entire match snake was mainly just recovering.
Me14k vs Kit(Snake) @FD: http://youtube.com/watch?v=xOnxUKgzBgs
A good show of pikmin throwing racking up damage, but also shows the hard lesson about needing to know and use Oli's KO moves.
Dan vs ROMEO(DeDeDe): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqfcA3a5fPo
In no way do we know everything there is to know about Olimar yet. This video is included here because of its interesting aggressive edge game tactics. Obviously not my idea of good positioning, but the only way to find new things is to try new things.
POOR:
Now for the bottom of the list, videos I'm not so sure should be kept on the thread.
Bowser:
1st Video Gimpy vs @ Summit: Perhaps their first time playing the game, weird map plus time spent getting used to characters in the start, and general low level play make this video =/
2nd Video @ FD: This is a CPU Olimar. I tried to watch it with an open mind, but really the comp simply did not impress me in any way.
Marth:
1st video Jimi vs Boxman @ FD: Poor play =/
Pokemon Trainer:
1st video on WarioWare: Was for a tv show, hosts are too busy talking to play, and stage is too busy to actually let them do much even if they were trying to.
2nd video @ FD: Again stomping a comp Olimar, not worth a viewers time as far as Olimar play goes.
Toon Link:
1st video @ Smashville: Poor play =/
Yoshi:
2nd video at FD: Again players first trying to get used to the characters, then very new/poor play follows.
Wolf:
4th video @ Custom Stage: The stage is pretty weird, a recreation of SSB64 Hyrule Temple. Items + Odd stage + video more showing the level than play = Not Worth Seeing for Olimar play.
Phew, so, there it is. The many other videos I didn't mention show a relatively average range of player ability and ideas, certainly worth watching if you have the time. If nothing else this hopefully gives people who cant see them all an idea of where to go for a start. Also removing the down videos at least, perhaps the poor ones also, will insure that any video listed is at least up and worth watching.
