I think it was done to emphasise how expressive everyone is in this Smash Bros. title. However, his personally so far seems an awful lot like Ash's Charizard from the anime. I sort of dropped off the anime shortly after those days, but I do still remember Ash's Charizard quite well in it. The whole idea of being a free Pokemon, to do as it pleases, and fight its own battles is emphasised in the trailer in my opinion. Again, similar to Ash's.

Of course, there's no concrete evidence to back this up, but it does draw a line for me.

So i'm thinking the top caption should be some bad situation, and then the bottom is stupid pollyanna trying to say something positive about it and failing

I just finished watching Pokemon Origins for the first time. I do have an aversion to the original animated series, so naturally this one flew over my head.

After seeing that, I hope to see more expression from Charizard. I can't see him being anywhere near Dedede as far as range of emotions are concerned, but there is certainly no need to be so stoic. Charizard is without a doubt a creature... a warrior of fury and determination. That said, I am sure even he can relish in a victory, be caught in a state of shock, express disinterest, etc.

I know this post may make it sound like I do not understand the topic, but what I am getting at is this neutral expression will make it so shifts in emotion can be more tangible. Kind of like those people IRL who always look angry all the time. We already got a character who is always scowling... Ike of course! What matters is that Charizard is capable of looking angry when he needs to be.
