I have tested and confirmed this for an upgrade from 4.1U to 4.2U. Enjoy.

Here's the link to the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kz9XZ9axWLM&fmt=18

Notice: This is an upgrade guide from 4.1 to 4.2. You need Homebrew already installed.

Notice 2: You should have no noticeable loss of functionality with it, it should work fine.

Notice 3:This will make it so you can keep HBC 1.03/1.04 with your newest Wii System Menu so you can have full functionality with both preloader and bootmii.

Notice 4: I recommend having nand dump before doing this and bootmii installed as a boot2 replacement.

What You Need:

The following Wii Applications/Installers on Your SD Card:
WAD Manager 1.4
Preloader
HackMii .5
HackMii .2

The Following PC Applications:
NUS Downloader

How to Set Up Your SD Card:

1). First, in the root of the SD card make a folder called "wad" without the quotations.

2). Go to the directory you download the NUS Downlaoder, unzip it, go inside and run the batch file for your proper region. Remember, J is for a Japanese Wii, U is for North American, and E is for European. If you have questions, ask here.

3). Go into each folder that is produced by the NUS Downloader and copy the produced ".wad" file to the "wad" folder that you just made on your SD card.

4). Make sure you have an "apps" folder in the root of your SD card. If not, make one. Now, make a folder called "Wii Wad Manager" in your "apps" folder and copy the .dol file into that folder and rename it boot.dol.

5). Next, make a folder in "apps" called Preloader. Now, extract the the files from the rar of the preloader download (if you don't have a rar unzipper, use 7-zip)). Now, copy the hacks.ini to the root of the SD card and the .dol file to the preloader folder you just created. Rename the .dol file to boot.dol.

6). Now make a new folder in "apps" called "Hackmii .2" and copy in the "boot.elf" from the download inside. Make another folder in "apps" called "Hackmii
.5" and copy in the "boot.elf" from the right download inside.

7). Now, edit the hacks.ini file and delete the contents. Paste inside the following instead for your proper region:

NTSC-U (North American)

Upgrading

1). Now, put your SD card on your Wii and go into Homebrew. Run the Wii Wad Manager and install every wad (choose IOS36 for the install, front SD slot for the install location). Make sure you install every wad file before you reset your Wii.

2). Now, make sure you exit by pressing Home and go to the Homebrew channel menu. Do not leave that menu. If you reset the system menu, your Homebrew channel will be deleted. Now, start the preloader application.

3). Ignore the warnings and have it install preloader on your Wii. Now, reload to the preloader menu (hold the reset button for a while) and go to the System Menu hacks option. Make sure you choose the "Disable HAXX, DVDX..." and "Block Disc Updates" options. Save the settings and go back to the main preloader menu.

4). Now, go settings and make sure the System Menu IOS is IOS60, and choose whatever autoboot you want (regular is System Menu, which is recommended for both).

5). Go to the Homebrew channel and run Hackmii .5 and install everything possible. Now, return to the Homebrew channel and run Hackmii .2 and install the Homebrew channel (since Hackmii .5 deletes the previous Homebrew channel and 1.05 has issues with compatibility but has better features).

6). Congratulations and enjoy, your Wii just got awesomer.

You can run the Twilight Hack again :) (with the preloader codes). And the new Dark Theme for it looks better than the previous ones. Plus it allows you to avoid the whole 4.2U brick issue.

I just got 4.2U and then got Homebrew 1.0.5. Mysteriously, I kept my Homebrew channel but then Gecko failed to load, so I thought that getting the new Homebrew would help, but it didn't. When I try to load Gecko, I go to the HBC, press "Load" on Gecko 1.9.2, and then the screen turns black (and I can't tell if its frozen). NEED HELP

Gecko OS 1.05 doesn't work well, install preloader .29 and then set the system menu hacks to disable hacks and then install HBC 1.03.

What if I updated to HBC 1.5? Also, do I readd Preloader .29? ( I already had it installed )

When you update it will be uninstalled for preloader, so you have to reinstall it. Make sure autoboot is set to off before you uninstall it.

Also, I highly recommend having HBC 1.03 and 1.05 and normally booting into 1.03. 1.03 has much better compatibility and just loading bootmii can get you into 1.05 if you want.

For those asking about Gecko OS 1.9.2--

No, it won't work. Go back to 1.9.1

1.9.2 requires IOS60, but because SM4.2 is using IOS70 and made IOS60 useless, it'll give a black screen.

1.9.1 uses IOS36 for its own purpose...which is why it works everywhere.

This updated actually doesn't make IOS60 worthless, which is partially why the update is useful.

This updated requires you to NOT stub IOS60. Nothing is stubbed by this method so it works great.

This whole thing really kinda confused me. Let's say, hypothetically, that my little brother decided it would be fun to update the wii system menu without any of the safety precautions listed in the OP. Can I get the homebrew channel back? And what is this about using gecko 1.9.1 instead of 1.9.2?

Yes, you can get HBC back.

When you get System Menu 4.2, it uses a file called IOS70, which overrides the file called IOS60 that Gecko 1.9.2 uses. Therefore, you can't use 1.9.2 and must go back to 1.9.1
There's no loss of functionality though. I haven't even bothered to upgrade to 1.9.2, but that's just me. :p

Sorry to keep asking, but do I just go find and use the twilight hack? Illinialex said something about preloader codes... What are those? Do I need them?

Twilight hack only works if you have already used preloader, which kind of defeats the purpose.

And anyway, IOS70 does not stub IOS60, the official update does.

So don't do it.

Upon trying to install the first WAD my I got ERROR= ret -IOS36 (the ret part might not be exact but it had 36 in it, I was afraid to do it again).

I'm on 4.1 and I was running through Homebrew channel 1.5(latest).

Ah ok you likely need to run the TBR first, trucha bug restorer to be able to run WAD's and might need cIOS38 rev14. Try running the installer for that first (can't give you link) and if it doesn't work use the TBR.

Can you summarize what you actually get out of 4.2 though? At the moment, I'm running 4.0u with all the available "stuff", and as of yet I don't see any convincing reason to update.

Which brings up my actual question -_- You said in the prerequisites you need "4.1". Will "4.0" be fine too?

Yes 4.0U is fine. I'm thinking you might need cIOS38 rev14 for this, because of the WAD Manager, I wanted cIOScorp installer but it autoboots to the system menu but it doesn't need a trucha signed IOS.

If you updated to HBC 1.05 before it could work out well. You could use the corp installer with these and should be fine without cIOS38 rev14.

The instuctions say I have to install everything on HackMii. Is DVDX and BootMii really needed for this process? I just want to keep my Homebrew Channel and nothing more.

Sucess.
I am now on 4.2 with the HBC still.
Thanks :)

I don't use Gecko for Brawl hacks so I decided not to stay at the older HBC.
Is this ok?

Yeah it is, it didn't have issues with Gecko OS, that was an IOS60 issue and sine we made sure not to stub it your fine.

However, it will have issues upon reloading Homebrew from channels often and preloader won't autoboot into Homebrew.

Ok, and those issues can't cause any irreversible damage right?
I don't use preloader for anything so that's fine...

i easily updated to 4.2 using a much easier method.

1. get homebrew channel 1.0.5 and dvdx. used comex's smash stack for this.
2. update. plain and simple.
3. homebrew remains. if you want, install bootmii for boot2.

just fyi, it you want to use gecko os, use version 1.9.1 and not 1.9.2.

That can and sometimes will brick your Wii because of Nintendo's faulty updater, and your idiotic for doing so.

Did you see the 10,000 threads here about it?? Seriously??

It highly reduces the options as well.

The Preloader download you have linked doesn't seem to include a hacks.ini file or a .dol file.

And the hackmii .5 link actually links to hackmii .6. Is that a problem?

EDIT: I ended up searching google and finding the files, but now I have ran into the same problem as Zolga Owns. I have also discovered that I am running 4.0U instead of 4.1U. How does that affect this process?

Hackmii .6 is fine, but the one is wrong. Get preloader .29, you need .29. Sorry I can't edit it, Supa Banned.

My wii crashed during the "safe" update and now it's gone.

Any way of getting it back?
