No more unlockable characters?

Yes deep down in my heart I am a troll

I think some really, really old school games did codes like that, so you could do whatever you wanted when you get a new cartridge? or just to tease you.

I am a-OK with having unlockable characters, but I would also like there to be some way to have all the competitive elements available from the start. Maybe a secret code? I don't know.
See the only problem with that is that it would then open the door to what exactly classifies as competitive elements...and for the love of all that is holy, that should be a well best left dry.

I kinda agree. Just let the code unlock EVERYTHING, but only temporarily.

I want unlockables, but I do sympathize. This isn't even just a casual/hardcore thing. I think a lot of casual smashers are frustrated by unlockables as well, since they may not be good enough at the game to get some of the content.

I remember when I bought Sega & All Star Racing Transformed. Some of the characters in that game are BRUTAL to unlock, both in terms of time and difficulty. But at the same time, I can't say I ever would have put the time and effort into the game if it wasn't for wanting to get Reala and AGES.

I don't think there's an easy answer for this. If you're going to have really time consuming challenges, people want a really good reward. But then people hate having to do something they find tedious in order to get that reward.

I'm pro unlockable, but I get it.

I loathe unlocking characters (even veterans) and stages in general, I want to have everything from the get go god damnit.

Hm...? Oh, it doesn't have to be a code or anything. Just some sort of feature to unlock all the characters, stages, rules, game play modes(?), etc. Those are what I consider to be the competitive features. That is, unless Smash 4 features an item inventory, allowing players to withdraw 1 specific item per game(chosen before hand) or something. Then perhaps items could become a competitive feature, by some small chance?

Make a 'tournament' code. Everything is unlocked, but the game doesn't save until the code is disabled and everything gotten from the code goes with it. And knowing Sakurai, he'd put it in some far-off menu that nobody would touch so he can surprise everybody with it, and so the character list is hidden for a few days.

I suppose that I could get behind an unlock code that works for one session. It grinds my gears, however, when people, in this topic an elsewhere, conflate all characters unlocked = EVERYTHING unlocked. No. Just the roster. I like exploring the single player options thank you very much.

I always have loved unlocking characters. When I as younger sometimes I would do it by complete accident and it always surprised me so I am hoping the unlocking aspect of the game returns.

I have the feeling that if there weren't unlockable characters, we'd be getting reveals at a much faster pace.

I'm going to be pretty upset if every character is available from the start. I'm fine if they have a code to unlock everything because that's optional. But for me smash is so recognized for the unlockable characters, for me it's one of the best factors of the game

Unlocking was kinda nice but it's kind of a stupid tradition. It's fun the first time but cumbersome if you ever lose that save file.

Yeah, that's kind of my feels about it. Actually, I remember Rock Band having a party mode or something like that where it would automatically unlock all the songs and back then I thought "oh wouldn't that be nice in fighters."

Still, there's a part of me that really really enjoys being surprised by newcomers, so if Sakurai doesn't post all the characters by the time of launch, I think I'd want to unlock them for the surprise factor.

Half the fun for me is unlocking characters, so I personally would be decently upset having everything from the beginning. That always bored me in all the other "modern fighters".

I always liked unlockable characters. It gave me a reason to take a look at all of the different features of the game and it was always great to see that "challenger approaching" screen.

I want cheat codes that let me automatically unlock everything though, just in case something happens to my save. Too bad we live in a world where cheat codes are dead.

Personally I enjoy unlocking all the characters, it gives you something to do to ignite the spark in a fresh game. and lets not forget the clear sense of accomplishment once you've done so. Almost all fighting games have unlockable characters, why stop now? that would be a poor decision on nintendo's part, as it is one of the most enjoyable things to do in the game.

No unlockable characters would be terrible for me. :( I love playing with what I have at the start, and then very slowly unlock new characters, and I want to struggle with some of them. A Smash without *Challegnet Approaching!* isn't Smash enough.

Since it's become a trend in modern fighting games, and Sakurai has revealed characters that tend to be unlockable (Luigi, Toon Link, Sonic, Marth), do you think that we'll get the complete roster from the get-go?

I think that would suck, personally. I want to work for my characters, and when I say that, I mean Melee-work for my characters, not that ridiculous thing of fighting 5 brawls and I get Ness, 5 more and I get Marth. Speaking of which, I hope Rosalina is unlockable, as she has been so in all games where she has been playable.

Thoughts?
I wanna leave my Wii U on for a Month to get Mewtwo this time

No sarcasm

Wow, I just LOVE the cynicism oozing from the commenters in here. :ohwell: THere's no way to keep a secret nowadays, but back then, it was so much fun to try and discover everything on your own. Nowadays I feel like I've lost my edge thanks to how easy it is to get answers or follow a guide. Too much temptation to bypass the challenge or spoil myself. Honestly, keep the unlockables. Have the bait dangling in front of you since you know they're there, you just have to use characters you normally wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole to get to them, get your full money's worth out of it.
You know what....once the release date gets announced ima cut all Smash info untill release

Ima do DA Melee Thing BrOOOOOO

(Pfftt.....yh right......im dying to know if Mewtwo will return and if Ridley gets in....but....i will do it !!

Plus, with how much Sakurai has been throwing in the good ol' " CHALLENGER APPROACHING" screen, I doubt we will have a fully unlocked cast at the start.

Half the fun (in my opinion) is unlocking the characters and seeing the silhouette of the character I'm about to unlock. Whenever that happens a part of me gets super excited.

What's the matter with them being cosmetic? They add something to the game, they're iconic and fun, music doesn't affect the gameplay at all and without music, Smash would SUCK.

And it's too hilarious how competitive players are always talking about 'working hard to get what you want' but they just want everything unlocked from the start to see which character has the best wavedash.

Blanket insults don't help anyone. There's tons of casuals that want everything unlocked at the start.

But they're not a part of competitive play. They're in a grey zone of sorts.
Not competitive =/= casual.

A true casual wouldn't even be on this site, or Gfaqs for that matter, Miiverse at most if that even. And wouldn't really look into their games or other games.

Now some of these people might not be competitive, but they ain't a casual either (the same goes for those that whine at competitive play, they aren't casuals either). They fall under "gamer" or "hardcore gamer".

That's why I said they're in between...
