FNAF isn't scary. It's annoying.
Because I'm not afraid of those animatronics at all. But I am tense when even watching the game be played because I do not want the sensation of a cartoon animal jumping out at me when I don't expect it.
When that happens, I do not have an anxiety attack and go into fetal position.
I go "GODDAMMIT" and play something less frustrating.

RE never once scared me.

FNAF is pretty darn scary.

FF makes me piss my pants in horror.

I'm not saying it isn't, but to me, if it weren't for atmosphere like Burb said the ''monsters" of Five Nights would not be scary IMO.

I suppose atmosphere plays a huge part in horror in general, but I feel like there'd be an unease with certain horror icons even without the proper atmosphere.

The gore of zombies for example or Freddy's face would bring unease simply from being deformed.

Or hell even the guy with a knife in a mask of characters like Michael Myers and Ghostface. He could be in broad daylight and you'd see that and still think twice about heading his way.

I'm just saying they're often fads among the Youtube Let's Players.

Like, look at how many Let's Plays there are of the FNAF series and I Wanna Be the Guy.

Seriously. A game centered around surviving those animatronics would be WAY more intense if you all had the run of the parlor.
Imagine crawling into the vents to escape only to come face to face with Freddy.

FNaF doesn't seem scary at all, honestly. The spookiness it has is part of its lore. I don't know how it tries to be scary, but that's for another day. Granted, I've never played the games; I'm not interested in them. Like, 100%. It's fine if you like it though.

As someone who doesn't give a **** about fnaf, I have to say, being able to make 4 games with next to no effort and all of them getting major success is something I simply must applaud. Is fnaf scary? It's the anticipation, Yahtzee Croshaw, one of the biggest Silent Hill 2 fans is terrified by fnaf because the anticipation trick works great. Also, Jim Sterling was involved with the game, thank god for him

People see the jumpscares and do tend to ignore the tension that leads up to it.

FNAF is a game that focuses on paranoia.

I have the opposite opinion. FNAF has never scared me. REmake has.
Frightened, startled, yes, but not scared.

I was watching a friend play this before, he was fighting some Hydra boss that kept sniping him, he cut off 7 heads after patiently waiting to strike, after one was left, he charged Leroy Jenkins style. He drowned in the water in front of the hydra.
