Same thing with scary.
RE never once scared me.
FNAF is pretty darn scary.
FF makes me piss my pants in horror.
I'm not saying it isn't, but to me, if it weren't for atmosphere like Burb said the ''monsters" of Five Nights would not be scary IMO.
I suppose atmosphere plays a huge part in horror in general, but I feel like there'd be an unease with certain horror icons even without the proper atmosphere.
The gore of zombies for example or Freddy's face would bring unease simply from being deformed.
Or hell even the guy with a knife in a mask of characters like Michael Myers and Ghostface. He could be in broad daylight and you'd see that and still think twice about heading his way.
