As far as potential mains go...

It more than likely won't change much for me as Link, ZSS, and Cloud are definitely my Top 3 (as you can probably tell from my signature); of course I'll also have to see how Falco, Roy, Ike, Zelda, and Ganondorf will play compared to their past iterations.

But we'll see, first of all I want to get a better feel of the new characters specifically the Inklings and Ridley (don't give two ****s about Daisy), to see if they resonate with me as well as see who else will be revealed. The concepts I keep thinking of for Elma has me thinking she'd be main potential for me, but that still depends on whether or not she's even in the game and whether Sakurai will come up with similar concepts.

You start with the original 12 and unlock the rest but Sakurai said its more streamlined so its not that hard or bad to unlock everyone.

I'd take that over unlocking 5% of the roster. Wii U/3DS's unlock able roster was one of the worst

I feel like they should make a free downloadable key to unlock all characters for tournaments or those who don't feel like unlocking the characters. Xenoverse 2 has something like that.

Cause I know there's a lot of folks who like unlocking everyone for the sake of it but you gotta admit it's an archaic design choice at this point.

As long as you can unlock everyone relatively quickly then it's just a minor annoyance at worst.

If it requires Melee-esque unlock conditions then we have a problem.

You ever see that South Park Warcraft episode where the boys spend weeks leveling up in the beginner zone to reach max level, and then when they're done, Kyle asks "So what do we do now?" And Cartman replies "Now we play the game."

It just feels like a chore you have to do before you can actually start playing.

Something interesting while I was watching Robin's footage in Smash Ultimate thus far:

You know how Sakurai said he detailed all the new stuff the veterans got?

At the end of most character trailers from the website, we see the Final Smash for that character. Robin's, however, was among the few not shown.

The Chrom supporter in me is looking at it from an optimistic perspective that the lack of footage of Robin's Final Smash might mean Robin is getting a new Final Smash that doesn't involve Chrom, and Chrom could finally be added as a separate fighter with the lack of any mention of Robin's Final Smash being a hint/buildup to that. However, I've only now noticed that there are several other character who don't have their Final Smashes shown at the end of their character trailers as well, so perhaps Chrom will still be Robin's Final Smash in this game.

"Gods," as Chrom likes to say. There's a part of me that's feeling strangely optimistic about Chrom's chances again.

I don't mind unlocking characters, I actually find it pretty fun. What I do mind though, is unlocking characters multiple times. I can't count how many times I've had to play through the same long story mode because a friend of mine didn't have anything unlocked yet or just didn't have the game. Just let me be able to play with whoever, whenever, wherever.

There are a number of them that don't end with Final Smashes for some reason. I really wouldn't put too much stock in it. There's a lot of clear evidence Sakurai was listening to fan complaints feedback and he's even already addressed the large number of FE characters before.

I think unlocking characters would still have something for it had it not been for almost all characters being revealed. Melee was exciting with unlocking characters as all the unlockables weren't shown, there were a good amount of unlockables and because not everybody had access to the internet then. Nowadays, almost everybody uses the internet and all of the characters are practically revealed and there isn't alot of "excitement" with unlocking them as you know who they are and whatnot.
