Yo speaking of writing discussions...

I wanted to follow up from my villain discussion only expect this time I want to talk about a very popular trope in fictional works.

...The good ol' Heroic Sacrifice trope that many writers like to use. i.e. the hero sacrifice themselves to take down the villain for the greater good of everyone else.

How do you guys feel about them in general? Personally I think they're good when used at the right time but I absolutely hate it when a heroic sacrifice is done and the villain still lives after.

I believe TV Tropes dubbed this trope the Senseless Sacrifice. When the hero's sacrifice doesn't do jack and the villain is still fine afterwards.

It's such a worthless trope IMO. Even if it is intended for emotional effect.
Heroic Sacrifices are best when two conditions are fulfilled.

A) There is a connection between the sacrificed and the one being taken down by the sacrifice. It can't be a character just cashing in on sacrificing themselves for extra last minute plot armor. The act of mutual destruction has to be intimate enough to justify their plot armor expending themselves together.

B) There ought to be meaning from not only the fall of the villain, but of the protagonist being gone as well. If the end result is not affected by their death then the reasoning for it really just comes down to the author trying to have a stronger emotional impact on the reader from the climax.

I agree on senseless sacrifice, the only gain from it can be to show the reader and other characters that a certain method, typically the assumed/standard method, no longer works, so their death amounts to a lesson and the beginning of a dilemma. However, that can be achieved without a Senseless Sacrifice. Someone can perhaps still die but I'd probably be more inclined for it to just be a fatal error rather than voluntarily offering up their life; otherwise, sacrifices have their meaning undermined when instead the author could be adding weight to making mistakes in the cast's situation.

Oh.

Sacrifice in writing.

We've been talking about heroic sacrifices, but what about when the villain sacrifices himself due to a change of heart?

What do you all think of that?

Eh, depends. I usually don't care enough about the villain for it to make an impact on me.

Goro Akechi's sacrifice is a recent example that comes to mind.

His sacrifice and slight change of heart felt rushed af and I couldn't care for it.

Not to mention it was one of those "never found the body" situations so I'm at least 90% sure he'll be back in some sequel spinoff of some sort.

I need Tempest Trials to start already so I can get the sacred coin rewards and finish my Galeforce Minerva build with HB3.

That would be Redemption Equals Death.
And I'm not a fan of it, most of the time. It's used to allows the villain to "redeem" themselves while not letting them get a happy ending which I get, it's hard for audiences to accept a villain getting a happy ending despite all the **** they've done so it's a way for them to pay for their sins.
But at the same time, it feels like a missed opportunity. I'd like to see more stories handle these villains from that point forward, Zuko being a good example of this because we see him as a hero as much as we saw him as an antagonist. Most of the time, we don't really get much of a chance to see these villains act as heroes and it's a dynamic that can really bring some interesting interactions.

I kinda find it boring honestly. I'd rather a villain turn a new leaf but then live passed it

Sometimes it's really sad but other times it just kinda feels like they're trying to make you feel for the character even though they don't deserve it.

This is supposed to be a happy occasion, let's not bicker and argue about who killed who.

So, this morning I was on campus, working on my demo reel, minding my own business, when this girl I've been seeing bursts into the room, charges over to me and shows me a picture of Disney's Hercules photoshopped on to a dinner roll. Immediately she says "Do you get it?" We haven't even spoken today, mind you. No hello or anything, she just shoves her phone right in my face.. Completely deadpan, I say "Of course I get it. Bless my soul, Herc was a roll." She then turns back to her friend who's standing sheepishly at the door and shouts "See?!" and then runs off.

And that's why I'mma marry that girl.

Guys I just had an awful realization.

I was looking at my units in Heroes, right? And then disaster struck when I realized I got Caeda her Wing Sword however long ago but never actually refined it.

I...I don't know how I missed that until now.

And now poor Jeorge needs to wait even LONGER for Parthia to get refined. One day, Jeorge. One day.

I think it depends on the character and what they've done or attempted to do to redeem themselves prior to sacrificing them self.

I definitely prefer seeing a character try to turn a new leaf and watch how that goes for them rather than just having them killed off to show that they turned good in the end.
Oh hey, just noticed you're fresh meat, I mean, new here so... Hi, welcome to our slaughter funhouse hope you enjoy your stay!
