Oh yeah, I remember that. Everyone always talks about how weird the gang is, especially Shaggy... Which they are, but no one ever seems to mention that Scooby looks like he's been gifted with advanced german engineering.

SomecallmeJohnny made a good point on why the custom character in Sonic Forces is a brilliant move.

Super Mario Maker was a hit because it allowed people to create their own levels, and fun pick up and play levels is what people play Super Mario games for, and not much else.

So it makes sense that Sonic would tackle a character creator instead. The general public and the kids don't really play Sonic for the gameplay (it's why most Sonic games sell well even when the quality isn't great). People just love the characters and the world. So letting people make their mark in that is a great way to sell the game. So many people will get hooked on the novelty of effectively being Sonic's right hand man in this game.
