I'll address the elephant in the room though - people acting as if this is SEGA stooping to a "new low" by allowing the "worst aspect of the Sonic fandom to thrive".
The reason why your average Sonic OC is often joked about and ripped on is because most Sonic OCs are actually made by genuine little kids and are just recolours of Sonic or Shadow made in MS Paint and are given some edgy backstory where they hate Sonic and want to kill him or whatever. While it's possible we may be able to make recolours of characters, the examples they've shown actually look very distinct, so at the very least, we know it's possible to make actually unique looking characters within the Sonic universe. Some of these species have rarely been seen in the Sonic universe (such as Cat, Bear, and Wolf. I also can't think of any Dog characters in the video game canon), so right off the bat you have the option to make a fairly unique looking character by just picking a default class.
Furthermore, these designs look pretty tasteful, like they were made by - *gasp* - the ACTUAL, same character designers that made Sonic and friends in the first place! Because you know, they make the Sonic games, not your average Sonic fan. Who would have thunk? :O (remember, Hoshino-san works at the SoA office along with Iizuka).
Also if you are looking forward to Sonic Mania, and are going to act as if this OC creator in Sonic Forces is a bad thing because it's allowing fans to express their creativity, then you're a hypocrite, because need I remind you guys that Sonic Mania is literally a Sonic fan-game that some fans pitched to SEGA, and has it's own Original the Characters (the Hard-Boiled Heavies). One such Hard-Boiled Heavy is literally a recolour of the Egg-Robo from S3&K (although one that's tasteful and makes sense). Original OC Donut Steel, amirite?
Also, if you want to be REALLY technical...this technically isn't the first time we've had an OC creator in an official, main series Sonic game. And this effort is better than the last one.
Now that I think about it...I wonder if the Switch version of Forces might give you this option too.
By all means, if you want to make silly meme characters, that's perfectly fine - I'm sure they will intentionally leave in a lot of quirky and silly options for your character for exactly that purpose. It's part of the fun of these kind of character creators - you can try to make a cool, interesting character, or you can go full Coldsteel meme mode. Make it your own experience with whatever is most fun to you. Personally, I'll be doing both (I hope you can save multiple characters).
In terms of what I've seen so far:
-Gameplay actually seems to be like a mix of Modern Sonic gameplay with elements such as the grappling hook (which may be inspired by the Sonic Boom games), and of course the ability to use weapons and gadgets. This actually excites me as it looks similar to how Torque in Freedom Planet plays, which was a hell of a lot of fun. It reminds me a bit of Mega Man as well. I hope there is a way to switch weapons and gadgets mid-level though.
-I'm...a LITTLE disappointed that there are 2D sections. I hope they aren't abundant. The OC's gameplay looks like they could very easily provide some nice, open ended exploration-based gameplay, since they are a little slower and they have the weapons and gadgets to aid in exploration.
-I like how the species seem to have inherent skills, but I think the Wolf, the Cat, and the Bird already sound broken compared to the others. I hope the customisation options are robust to make up for it. I don't want the Skill system from Generations to go to waste. They should bring that back for the OC.
-The customisation looks...really in-depth actually, at least as far as outfits are concerned. There's a lot of cool variety in what you can wear. I think I know some pieces of gear that will be favourites around the internet:
Also, I really like the UI. It looks really crisp. Looks a bit like the UI in Persona 5, actually.
You can also see a "World Map" and a "Mission" tab there - I'm hoping this means this will have a more robust adventuring/questing system like Sonic Unleashed.
There's also a snippet of unedited footage of the OC and...IS THAT IN-LEVEL VOCAL THEMES I HEAR?
Also one thing that looks neat is that it seems like the grappling hook isn't just for show. As in, I don't think it's automated (not all of the time anyway).
The player in the footage swings downwards to a lower path, but you can see the Rings and empty Wisp capsules hint at a higher path they could have possibly swung up to using a combination of momentum from the grappling hook swing, and maybe other abilities like the Burst Wisp.

They'll likely be around the same height since being able to change their size would require programming extra hitboxes. Maybe they'll go the extra mile though.

Oh gosh, not the Sonic OCs again. Need a distraction, now...
Moving swiftly on, it looks like the review embargo on Shadows of Valentia has lifted. Most of the reviews I've seen so far hover around the 70-80% mark, which is not bad, I guess, but they feel too much like they were written by people who just didn't "get" the game, and are unfamiliar with the series outside of Awakening and Fates; I will say, Echoes will feel like a significant shock to the system if you only know those two games, with no weapon triangle, no reclassing for skills, no S-supports, etc. I wouldn't be put off by these differences, though, or dock the game points for them, they just make you focus more on other aspects of the strategy (like the terrain effects, which are a much bigger factor in this game, or to more carefully consider a mage's choice of spell, since they consume HP here, and you don't want to endanger them by using an attack that will weaken them too much) which most of the reviews overlook or pay little attention to. This looks like the only review I've read so far that actually gets what the developers were aiming for with the game, and whose writer actually knows the series outside of the most recent games. I will agree, however, with the reviewers complaining about Cantor summoning spam; that gets very annoying very quickly, and it is a problem that I would dock points for. I think if you're considering getting the game, but have only played Awakening or Fates, it's still worth getting; I think it's a good thing that they decided to bring back Gaiden and give players a taste of something different.
tbh I shouldn't have made this game. No OC will EVER be better than Suck the ****
edit: There's fanart of the oc and it looks like ****ing Sonic Channel artwork
Yep. Sonic was originally gonna be a white rabbit who's special power was grabbing objects with his ears. The concept was dropped, but later inspired Ristar.
There's a really cool Sonic fan-game in development that I've been looking forward to that also takes this design and makes a separate character out of it.
