I know there's a myriad of jokes that can be made about them adding a character creator to Sonic Forces, but man that's honestly pretty cool and It's nice to see them appealing to the fans when they didn't have to do this. I can see a lot of kids being happy and utilizing this.

In all seriousness, seeing this oc character maker is pretty fascinating. Sonic as this odd internet weird phenom intrigues me more than the actual line of games. Seeing Sega embrace the oddball side of the fan culture maybe is the epitome Sonic's icon status post the Dreamcast. No other game franchise would go in this direction. Then again, no other franchise has quite the history and culture. Maybe this was all inevitable. My popcorn is ready for that comes out of this.

Character creation is a common staple of many games, as is weird fandoms.

I saw someone cite Xenoverse as an example, that's probably the closest parallel. Splatoon 2 adding alternate tentacle styles goes somewhere near the idea in concept as well considering that actually has a fairly large OC community. . .and weird stuff does crop up from time to time with it.

Sonic's not some unique entity for attracting this kind of attention, it's just the largest video game franchise to have acceptable fodder to be able to do so. People get freaked out when they see it or My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic have OCs, but take any franchise with a premise that allows for a species and should it do well enough you'll have a community making OCs and a subcommunity within it doing bizarre things with them.

I want that too, but TBH I resent the Sola Sonica community enough that I'll take this as a compromise while I'm waiting.

So the custom character creator in Sonic Forces ended up being true.

...yay.

And the riffing and reaction to it is just what I expected it to be. Part of the reason why I didn't want it in the game in the first place.

I mean, it does look better than I thought it would be, and the use of gadgets is an interesting idea.

I think I would be more accepting of a customizable character if this were a spin-off, rather than the next main series game.

I'm just starting to feel indifference to Sonic Forces at this point. I pray Sonic Team know what they're doing with this.
